Projet
AP207.S1.1968.PR07
Description:
The project series documents "Citta Futura", a series of architectural drawings made by Pettena as part of his graduation thesis at University of Florence in 1968. Pettena's thesis was on the urban requalification of the Santa Croce area in Florence damaged by a flood in 1966. For this project Pettena was "influcenced by the many visionary proposals of 'cities of the future' of the early '60s" [1] The project series contains project descriptions in English and in Italian, and scanned copies of drawings by Pettena for his thesis at the end of the 1960s. AP207.S1.2014.PR05
Description:
The project series documents the installation "Architecture Ondoyante", designed by Pettena and presented at the FRAC Lorraine in Metz, in 2014. The installation consists of hanging long strips of white plastic on the facades of the FRAC building "to confuse the well-defined and somewhat austere space of the building that hosts the FRAC, wrapping it in light and movement would have overturned the grain of static, centuries-old architecture." [1] A similar installation, "Forgiving Architecture" was realized in 2009 at the Athens Biennale. Another edition of the installation was presented in the exhibition "Gianni Pettena. About non conscious architecture" at the Galleria Giovanni Bonelli in Milan, in 2017. The project series contains three sketches, a drawing, and photographs and videos of the installation. Projet
AP207.S1.2002.PR01
Description:
The project series documents a series of performances entitled "Il Mestiere Dell'Architetto". The first edition was performed by Pettena in Maiano, near Florence in 2002. It consisted of a series of images of Pettena rock climbing that represents the work of the architect "and the role of those who work in the discipline, what is represented here is the need to make choices and at the same time the difficulty of doing so, of taking routes that, while they may appear impassable, are actually the very essence of the artist’s thought and language [...]." [1] Another version was performed in 2004 at the Ex-Meccanotessile complex, in Florence, 2004, and consisted of a series of photographs of a man climbing the interior roof structure of the building. Unlike the 2002 edition of this performance, "not even nature offers its support to those who, despite moving with caution, often find themselves in a situation of impasse." [2] A final version of the performance was created in 2012 by Pettena. The digitally created installation consisted of a gradually fading shape of a climber drawn in leaves that slowly disperse. In this installation, compared to the two previous ones, the architect "seems to find here a solution and ultimate freedom through the final choice of ‘giving in’ to the prevalence of natural environment." [3] The project series contains a sketch and photographs of the 2002 performance, photographs of the 2004 performance, and a drawing for the 2012 performance. Description:
This project series documents the performance "Marea" presented as a conference given by Pettena to the Architectural Association of London while standing at the mouth of the Thames in London during the rising of the tide. Pettena's idea was to give "conference on the theory of architecture, pure, abstract theory, produced in a limited time, its length determined by the constraints imposed by changes in the physical environment." [1] The project series contains photographs of the performance showing Pettena standing in the water as the tide slowly rises. Description:
The project series documents "Nature vs Architecture", a series of drawings created by Pettena in 2012-2013. It consists of plans of famous buildings assembled together in six different drawings to which Pettena added topographic lines showing geological features. "A very clear symbology shows here how the artist wishes to side up, in the confrontation, with nature, because its force cannot be ignored by architecture, whether consciously or not." [1] The project series contains the six original drawings by Pettena, a montage of the drawings and a project description in Italian. Description:
The project series documents "Human Wall", an installation by Pettena presented at the Galleria Federico Luger in Milan, in 2012. The installation consists of a large rectangular surface handmade with clay and covered in imprints of hands and fingers. "A wall that is described as "human," certainly not just because it is made by man, but rather because the latter's intervention find expression in the choice of a natural material and in the sign that he leaves on its surface with his fingers." [1] Other editions of this installation were also presented at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City, in 2012, and the exhibition "Architetture Naturali/Gianni Pettena" at the Kunst Meran/Merano Arte in Meran, in 2017. The project series contains design studies for the texturing of the wall, photographs of the installation, a video of the montage of the installation in Milan in 2011.
