Résumé:
The Queen Alexandra Sanatorium in Davos is a masterpiece of early modernist architecture by the Swiss architects Pfleghard & Haefeli (Schatzalp, Davos) and the renowned civil engineer and bridge builder Robert Maillart. A new form of architecture was forged here, full of contradictions and compromises and the result of intense collaboration between engineer, architect, and client. It stands at the threshold of modernism, which is largely characterized by the use of reinforced concrete. Apart from certain early mentions in architectural history, very little has been written about this Swiss precursor of modernist architecture. Drawing on numerous archival records, Daniel Korwan now provides the first detailed chronology of this 1909 building, thus expanding the record on the historical reception of modernism.

In the 1970s, a void opened at the heart of architecture. In hotels, offices, public buildings, and commercial centers, the atrium emerged globally to challenge the modernist legacies of form and function, altering the pattern and experience of cities. While often appearing at vast scale and to striking effect, the atrium also became omnipresent and mundane. In this lively critique, Charles Rice charts the atrium's appearance in the 1970s and its development through the 1980s, as it accompanied profound shifts in the discipline and practice of architecture. During this period, architectural practice especially in the United States and United Kingdom was changing rapidly, due in part to the manifold effects of deregulation. All aspects of the way buildings were designed, developed, regulated, built, managed, and occupied were being reshaped. A practice guided by the progressive tenets of modernism was being turned into a professional service fully integrated within neoliberal social and economic imperatives. As Rice shows, the atrium gives this story a distinct spatial and material figure, one that offers an inside view of architecture in transformation.

Résumé:
The oldest churches shown in this book were built as early as in the 15th century, most of those still standing were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, and quite a few are still being built today. Many were destroyed in the two world wars, many fell victim to ethnic cleansing after 1945, some fell into disrepair during the Soviet era, others were burnt down by lightning or short circuits, and quite a few simply gave way to the more "representative" stone churches as early as the 19th century. But a large number are still standing, consecrated, and believers gather in them. In fact almost of them in the various Carpathian countries are protected monuments, and many have been lovingly restored in recent times. More than the architectural-historical value, the question arises here of the aesthetic assessment of these small buildings. It is not a refined canon of forms of great architecture that can be derived and proven from the history of architecture that inspires us so much. Ba-sically, they are not overly sophisticated constructions in terms of craftsmanship, they are safe and beautiful in their simplicity. Their aesthetic appeal, however, also includes the surface-weathered material, deformed structures, colour improvisations, recently ornamented sheet metal, inside wall paintings, altar and iconostasis furnishings derived from Renaissance and Baroque periods, but above all their location in the village, mostly isolated, often elevated, surrounded by old trees, enclosures and graves without cemetery order.

For decades, husband-and-wife photography duo James and Karla Murray have been on a mission to document and preserve in film the various small shops of New York City—many of which are quickly disappearing—and a culture of authenticity that is hanging by just a thread. Most of the storefronts are featured in generous single-page images with captions listing location, neighborhood, and year the photo was taken. Filled with diversity and character, these images honor destinations lost to rising rents and changing demographics. Together they comprise both a guidebook and a love letter to a city that never sleeps, and is always evolving.

Résumé:
After World War II, a new kind of playground emerged in Northern Europe and North America. Rather than slides, swings, and roundabouts, these new playgrounds encouraged children to build shacks and invent their own entertainment. Playgrounds tells the story of how waste grounds and bombsites were transformed into hives of activity by children and progressive educators. It shows how a belief in the imaginative capacity of children shaped a new kind of playground and how designers reimagined what playgrounds could be. Ben Highmore tells a compelling story about pioneers, designers, and charities—and above all—about the value of play.

Résumé:
"The Barrack, 1572–1914" tells the little-known history of a building type that many people used to register as an alien interloper in conventionally built-up areas. The barrack is a mostly lightweight construction, a hybrid between a shack, tent, and traditional building. Easy to erect and to take down, it is—after the introduction of railways and later motor vehicles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries—also easy to transplant from one location to another. Originating as a standardized accommodation for semi-permanent military encampments in the late sixteenth century, the barrack became a mass-produced utility of military and civilian mobilization in the nineteenth century, providing immediate shelter for soldiers, prisoners, or displaced persons, as well as well-ventilated hospital wards for the sick. The barrack played a decisive role in shaping the political space of modernity.
