Résumé:
Fang’s novel tells the story of a man in the process of designing a theme park, called Garden of Mirrored Flowers, and is an adaptation and transformation of the classical Chinese novel Jin Hua Yuan, or Flowers in the Mirror, from the Qing Dynasty. Beginning as a pictorial journey through myriad advertisements and the way they allow for many different entries into reality, Fang depicts parallels between the park’s actual construction and how it has been imagined, or how it has evolved out of history. For Garden of Mirrored Flowers is less the vision of one author (Fang) and more the result of reality writing itself through this author; that is, a script, or documentary, of life. “It’s a book,” Fang states, “written by a ghost writer. Me? Just a traveler floating within the wave of globalization.” Culminating with the park’s opening ceremony, Fang creates a space where history seems to have been completely consumed and absorbed by contemporary social movements. It is both a labyrinth to get lost in and a pavilion made of reflective glass.

Résumé:
In the summer of 2008, Apeldoorn, the Netherlands' garden city, hosts the inaugural International Garden and Landscape Architecture Triennial--which takes on key issues at the heart of landscape and garden architecture and aims to define and refine the relationship between nature, culture and landscape. Contemporary landscape architecture is called on to create and implement pleasing and ecologically sustainable solutions in situations where different--and often competing--functions exist on the same tract of land. There are a great many people--local residents, ecological and cultural heritage conservationists and academics--for whom these questions are of great concern. Even for the average urban dweller or suburban homeowner, public and private gardens provide society, respite, leisure and an increasingly rare connection with the land. Not just a catalogue overview of the triennial's program, this thoughtful volume includes essays by leading scholars as well as interviews with policy makers and designers.

Résumé:
Each chapter of the book is dedicated to one decade, with an essay outlining general developments during those ten years and a discussion of the most distinctive projects; the most important projects are illustrated. The images consist to a large extent of historic and new photographic material, supplemented where necessary with plans and design drawings. Through the decades, the themes discussed include: the transition from 'utilitarian greenery' to 'greenery for consumption', the Zuiderzee Works - the construction of the massive Afsluitdijk (Enclosing Dike) to close off the Zuiderzee from the Waddenzee, the changes in agriculture, the Ecological Master Plan, garden design on country estates, the transformation of managed nature into 'new nature', and the development of public gardens and parks. The design or the designer are the main focus throughout, always considered in the light of broad social developments, such as fashionable trends, the increase of scale and intensification in agriculture, and changing recreational demands. The book contains work of a.o. Zocher, De Bazel, Granpré Molière, Mien Ruys, Van Eesteren, Dudok, Bijhouwer, Le Roy, Fortuyn/O'Brien, Baljon, Van Gessel and West 8.

Résumé:
The past decade has witnessed a profound transformation in European landscape architecture, away from the formal, centrally-planned garden art that hallmarks traditional European parks, toward projects, often the result of interdisciplinary cooperation between architects, artists, and landscape architects, of a more informal, almost exploratory, nature. "In Gardens" examines more than thirty of the most influential recent landscape projects in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, and from designers like Kathryn Gustafson, Dani Karavan, and Charles Jencks. In the process, this panoramic book illuminates a new paradigm of garden design in Europe and provides a fount of inspiration for landscape designers everywhere.

Résumé:
This catalogue to the CCA's exhibition presents four of the most representative and best documented of the artificial excavation projects: an urban design scheme for Cannaregio West in Venice (1978); a housing project near Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin (1980-1981, partially realized 1982-1986); a design for the University Art Museum at California State University, Long Beach (1986); and Chora L Works (1985-1986), a garden for the Parc de La Villette in Paris designed in collaboration with Jacques Derrida. Each project is presented through the architect's drawings and models, over 200 images in all, more than 150 of them in colour, most from the collections of the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Each project sequence begins with a theoretical text by Eisenman, then goes on to a project history describing the site and explaining Eisenman's design strategy. The unprecedented publication of complete series of conceptual drawings not only illustrates Eisenman's design process in detail, but also traces the transformation, through drawing and model making, of his architectural discourse. With essays by Alan Balfour, Yve-Alain Bois, Jean-François Bédard, Jean-Louis Cohen, Kurt W. Forster, K. Michael Hays, Arata Isozaki, and Fredric Jameson.
