Description:
This series contains reproductions of photographs that were taken by Alexandre Alves Costa from 1974 to 1976. The photographs document the Portuguese Revolution and the beginning of the SAAL process. The material gives a sample of events that occurred at the time, such as protests and assemblies, and shows political graffiti and the living and housing conditions of families of Portuguese workers. The SAAL Process exhibition at the CCA displayed these reproductions as a timeline in one of the galleries. The arrangement of this series reflects the arrangement of the timeline. For the exhibition, photographs taken in 1974 to 1976 were selected to illustrate the events, actions and decisions that lead to the SAAL process from the beginning of the Portuguese Revolution to SAAL. Note that the reproductions of photographs documenting SAAL projects used in the exhibition are arranged under their respective project series.

The three portfolios of "Croquis", originally attributed to Hubert Rohault de Fleury, but probably also including work by Charles, are particularly informative of the range of artistic and architectural interests of these architects. While some of the drawings in these portfolios may be travel sketches or based on travel sketches (Charles is known to have visited some of the locations depicted (1)), the majority are probably copied or adapted from books and prints. In some cases, these sources have been identified. The stylistic range of the drawings is eclectic; in addition to the expected Classical material, Gothic, Romanesque, Islamic, Exotic Revival (namely Etruscan and Egyptian), Renaissance and Baroque periods and styles as well as contemporary 19th century architecture are all represented. The subject matter is equally varied. DR1974:0002:032:001-066, two portfolios, includes arabesque ornament (some from Palazzo del Te and Palazzo Ducal in Mantua (2)), Islamic ornament motifs, tile patterns, Sicilian architectural subjects - mainly church interiors, and stonework and woodwork from Romanesque and Gothic structures . DR1974:0002:031:001-055, three portfolios, contains drawings of classical figures, Christian imagery and architectural sculpture from antique, medieval [?] and 19th century sources, sculpture from the 16th century sepulchral monument of Maximillian I, Italian Classical structures and contemporary classically-inspired subject matter including a number of Parisian fountains and monuments, and several English townhouses. DR1974:0002:030:001-065, four portfolios, includes drawings of Classical, Gothic and Exotic Revival buildings and interiors as well as a number of drawings of non-architectural subject matter including military subjects - fortification, armaments, soldiers, and revolutionary battle scenes - and topographic views. A folder of Italian views and buildings in this portfolio may have been intended for publication. The designs for interiors, Empire furniture, garden structures and several of the buildings are probably original designs by Hubert. (1) A description of Charles' travels based on his sketchbooks held by the Académie d'architecture is found in Académie d'architecture, 'Catalogue des collection' (Paris: Académie d'architecture, 1988) 35-36 and 230-241. The OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen fonds, circa 2004-2015, documents the firm’s work on three projects: Tower and Square (unbuilt, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 2004), Drying Hall Arbor (Hulshout, Belgium, 2013), and Villa Buggenhout (Buggenhout, Belgium, 2010). The fonds consists of born-digital and textual materials, as well as several models. The digital files include three project directories packaged as .zip files: “CCA-office09-tower&square”; “CCA-office29-villa buggenhout”; “CCA-office117-Arbor”. Each directory is divided into two subdirectories titled “working folder” and “final materials". The “working folder” subdirectory is organized either chronologically per phase or per file type. The “final materials” subdirectory contains the final project files, including presentation drawings, photos, and final versions of the collages. The transfer also includes two copies of the project credits in .pages and .pdf file formats.

This series documents Pierre du Prey's research and writing on the Ockham Park album held in the collection of the Canadian Centre for Architecture. The album consists of nineteen folios of drawings and manuscripts devoted to proposed alterations to the Jacobean house, Ockham Park, in Surrey, England. The house, built circa 1638, was altered by architect Nicholas Hawksmoor between 1729 and 1730. Du Prey originally began this research in 1979-early 1980s for a publication project. He returned to this research in 2016 on the occasion of Phyllis Lambert's 90th birthday. Pierre du Prey produced a book from this research which he gave to Lambert for her birthday. The series contains materials from Pierre du Prey's early research on the album from 1979 to 1985, as well as the additional research and writing he produced in 2016. Also included are photographic reproductions of drawings and manuscripts in the Ockham Park album, correspondence, notes and manuscript for du Prey's catalogue.
