Résumé:
Michel de Certeau considers the uses to which social representation and modes of social behavior are put by individuals and groups, describing the tactics available to the common man for reclaiming his own autonomy from the all-pervasive forces of commerce, politics, and culture. In exploring the public meaning of ingeniously defended private meanings, de Certeau draws brilliantly on an immense theoretical literature in analytic philosophy, linguistics, sociology, semiology, and anthropology - to speak of an apposite use of imaginative literature.

Résumé:
This original collection examines how architectural ideas, social models and building forms circulate round the world and become mediated and adapted to local conditions. The book shows how types such as skyscrapers, mosques or living history museums are imported, adapted and contested in different societies and how urban landscapes are reshaped by the global circulation of models drawn from elsewhere. Written by scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds –architecture, anthropology, geography, linguistics, science studies and sociology – the book draws its inspiration from a series of different approaches and offers both original theoretical reflection and carefully crafted case-studies.

Résumé:
This pocket-sized book by young Estonian artist Triin Tamm was published as a contribution to the exhibition ‘If it’s part broke, half fix it.’ at the Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius, in 2011. Known for embracing simultaneity, incoherence, multiplicity, and clumsiness juxtaposed with perfection, Tamm participates in the production of small crafts, minute actions and simple writings to express a sense of freedom in both the mundane and the paths less travelled. Here she explores the contents of an eclectic selection of books encompassing an assortment of divergent but related themes, from typography to linguistics and from spirituality to symbolism.

Written in 1966 in response to an attack on Barthes's sur Racine, this polemic answers many of the charges brought against French new criticism by conservative, academic, 19th-century-oriented critics: lack of "objectivity," fondness for "jargon," indifference to the author's intention, etc. More positively, Barthes outlines some key concerns: plurality of meanings;(...)

Résumé:
Written in 1966 in response to an attack on Barthes's sur Racine, this polemic answers many of the charges brought against French new criticism by conservative, academic, 19th-century-oriented critics: lack of "objectivity," fondness for "jargon," indifference to the author's intention, etc. More positively, Barthes outlines some key concerns: plurality of meanings; analysis, based on linguistics, of the structures of possible meanings; the idea of a science of literature; and the dynamics of reading. Though some of the issues are specific to the French literary-academic situation, the bulk of this brief essay is a lively and accessible statement of an important modern critical position that is worth reading.

Résumé:
Linguistic Hardcore is the first issue of The Happy Hypocrite, a new biannual journal led by artists’ writings. Informed by a lineage of modern experimental and avant-garde magazines, such as: Bananas, Documents, The Fox, Merlin and Tracks, this journal aspires to unpack the methodology of such key journals, whilst providing a brand new approach to art writing. It will provide a greatly needed testing ground for new writing and research-based projects, somewhere for artists, writers and theorists to express experimental ideas that might not otherwise be realised or published. An interview, a translation, a short story, notes on time, some possible captions, Bananas and an index. Artist’s pages and artist’s writings from: Cosey Fanni Tutti, Douglas Coupland, Stewart Home, Andrea Mason, Clunie Reid, Gerard Byrne, Paolo Arao, Lisa Robertson, Farhad Ahrarnia, Nick Thurston, Giles Eldridge, and Alexandre Singh.

Résumé:
Each project in this publication covers both aspects of Della Valle Bernheimer's creative process, often demonstrating that they think both with their minds and their hands; the process is cerebral as well as physical. Thinking about the larger contexts of site and program, as well as about historical precedents, linguistics, and correlations to natural forms and phenomena, Della Valle Bernheimer creates thoughtful, structurally innovative architecture. For the Artreehouse in New Fairfield, Connecticut — designed in collaboration with structural engineer Guy Nordenson — they observed patterns of light filtered through canopies of native tree species and scoured the history of building techniques in the region to design a 5,400-square-foot, locally inspired house. This monograph illustrates how personal, associative, and often highly poetic thoughts are made legible in architecture.

Résumé:
This pioneering work is the first to trace how our understanding of the causes of human behavior has changed radically over the course of European and American cultural history since 1830. Focusing on the act of murder, as documented vividly by more than a hundred novels including "Crime and Punishment, An American Tragedy, The Trial," and "Lolita," Stephen Kern devotes each chapter of "A Cultural History of Causality" to examining a specific causal factor or motive for murder--ancestry, childhood, language, sexuality, emotion, mind, society, and ideology. In addition to drawing on particular novels, each chapter considers the sciences (genetics, endocrinology, physiology, neuroscience) and systems of thought (psychoanalysis, linguistics, sociology, forensic psychiatry, and existential philosophy) most germane to each causal factor or motive.
