Résumé:
Recent generations of farmers have reinvented the family farm and its traditions, embracing organic practices and sustainability and, along with them, a bold new use of modern architecture. The New Farm profiles sixteen contemporary farms around the globe, accompanied by plans and colorful images that highlight the connections among family, food, design, terrain, and heritage. Visit a Tasmanian sheep shearers' quarters with a dramatic coastal view and a bamboo-wrapped farm shed in Kentucky. Learn from a fourth-generation poultry breeder and newcomers who have stepped off the corporate ladder and into the barnyard. Projects include an olive oil grove and mill in California, the storied Stone Barns Center in New York, and organic farms in Canada and across Europe. An introduction places the design of these farms in a lineage of celebrated architects including William Wurster, William Turnbull, Edward Larrabee Barnes, Marc Appleton, and Tom Kundig.

This holistic view is enriched by contributions from renowned authors from disciplines as diverse as psychology, health management, landscape architecture and art history.

A booklet to illustrate and discover a historic building, the Lingotto in Turin, through photographs provided by the Fiat archive which retrace the different architecture of the complex over the course of time, as well as its design and management. Résumé:
Through exquisite drawings and storytelling, Julia Jacquette's graphic memoir provides a distinctive account of her childhood in Manhattan in the 1960s and 1970s. Inspired by the adventure playgrounds from her youth growing up in New York City, the painter Julia Jacquette explores the brightly colored structures of the play spaces and the surrounding landscape of the city in Playground of My Mind. With compelling illustrations and personal narrative, this book features adventure playgrounds created by architects Richard Dattner, M. Paul Friedberg, the partnership Ross Ryan Jacquette in New York City, and Aldo van Eyck in Amsterdam. These structures encouraged constructive, imaginative play and gave renewed life to utopian notions of American and European modernist architecture.

Résumé:
The Murrays have been capturing impeccable photographs from the streets of New York City since the 1990s. With Store Front II they’ve continued their documentation of an important cross-section of New York’s “Mom and Pop” economy. The Murray’s penetrating photographs are only half the story though. Their copious background texts, gleaned largely from interviews with the stores’ owners and employees, bring wonderful color and nuance to the importance of these unique one-off establishments. The Murrays have rendered the out of the way bodegas, candy shops and record stores just as faithfully as the historically important institutions and well known restaurants, bars and cafes. From the Stonewall Inn to the Brownsville Bike Shop and The Pink Pussycat to Smith and Wolensky, the Murrays reveal how New York’s long-standing businesses stand in sharp contrast to the city’s rapidly evolving corporate facade.

Résumé:
Cafés, restaurants and hotels are some of the core spaces of modernity. These spaces of taste and leisure have long provided the settings for public performance and image cultivation for city-dwellers in the emerging metropolises of the world. This is where modernity is felt most strongly. Suspended between private and public space, these sites offer a backdrop for urban bohemians, for the plotting of revolutions, for the beginnings and ends of romances. Architecture historian Franziska Bollerey takes readers on an engaging journey through the history of cafés, restaurants and hotels, analyzing their architectural and cultural significance and charting their shifting roles in the development of the modern metropolis. Thoroughly researched and abundantly illustrated, Bollerey’s "Setting the Stage for Modernity: Restaurants, Cafés, Hotels" offers a view of this important part of Western cultural history for the first time.

Résumé:
Japan’s grand resort hotels, built during the era between the Restoration of the Meiji Emperor in 1868 until the outbreak of war in the late 1930s, are some of the most engaging and enduring examples of the country’s cross-fertilization with the West. As an unprecedented flow of people and ideas entered the country in the late 19th century, Japanese hoteliers began to tailor their businesses and buildings to receive foreign emissaries and adventurous travelers, and provide glamorous settings in which worldly Japanese and curious Westerners could mingle. Eager to champion both its national identity and its status as a modern nation, these business owners looked to adapt Western hotel standards to the cultural demands of the Japanese archipelago. Welcoming the West focuses on six of these grand resort hotels: the Nara, the Fujiya, the Nikko Kanaya, the Fuji View, the Biwako and the Gamagori.
