Weavers' Studio
AP182.S1.2013.D2
Description:
File documents a project for a live-work complex in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. Commissioned by Chiaki Maki, a Japanese textile weaver who spends a portion of each year in northern India, this complex in the Himalayan foothills provides working space for a studio of twenty-five weavers from all over the country. It is conceived as a cyclical, self-sufficient farm system that integrates all aspects of the weaving process, from cultivating indigo and henna for dye to gathering silk from cocoons and spinning wool. The site had been previously cultivated, and the design works with the landscape's existing pathways, terraces, and mango groves. Nearly all construction materials--including the brick, limestone, and phosphorescent river stones used in the foundation and to treat the brick walls--come from within a two-kilometre radius of the studio. The five-sided building occupying the centre of the site is the workshop itself, which frames a courtyard for gatherings (of weavers, children, etc.). A gallery in the complex displays the weavers' work, while the linear buildings accommodate motorcycle parking, a guest house, and residences for Maki and her partner as well as the site caretaker and his family. File contains artefacts and realia, models, photographs, drawings, site reports, and a video recording.

McAppy
AP144.S2.D89
Description:
File documents a design programme undertaken for construction company, Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons Ltd., in London, England. The aim was to increase the efficiency of production and improve labour relations by producing enclosures, equipment, material, and information systems that would improve safety, on-site communication, and job satisfaction. Cedric Price's office produced 2 report volumes, a Portable Enclosures Programme (PEP) and used at least one construction site, at Angel Court, as a test site for the proposals. Diagrams and flow charts show preliminary planning and programming design decisions and show the relationship between present and future factors. A flow chart illustrates the scope of the program. Charts and diagrams map the relative time scale of parts of the programme over various development phases. An axonometric and cutaway drawing show the interior construction of a pedestrian walkway. Data showing both the projected and real results of a site test application of McAppy planning and equipment from 1974 to 1975 was collected and presented as a broadside. A large number of original drawings are included within the textual records. Material in this file was produced between 1955 and 1987. Zisman, Bowyer & Partners provided consultation services. File contains design development drawings, model, photographic materials, presentation drawings, and textual records.

AP075.S1.1975.PR01
Description:
Project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's project for the grounds of the Museum of Anthropology located on the northern end of the University of British Columbia campus. Oberlander worked on this project from 1975-1976 with architect Arthur Erickson. The project was completed in 1976. Due to the location of museum on the Northwest Coast First Nations site, the building was designed to evoke a First Nations longhouse. Oberlander concept for the landscaping was inspired by the Northwest Coast First Nations culture. It initally included a reflecting pool to represent the coastal inlet and an ethnobotanically significant selection of plants. However some features from the original design, such as the reflecting pool and some of the indegenious planting, weren't realized until the mid-2000s. The shield the site from the noise of the busy NW Marine Drive, located next to the grounds, Oberlander included "a series of large mounds planted with Haida seed mix". [1] The project series contains reprographic copies of working drawings, including landscape plans, landscape sections and details, grading and irrigation plans, planting plans, and site plans. The project is also documented through textual records, including specification, correspondence with architects and clients, inspection reports, and some handwritten notes by Oberlander. The project series also comprises photographs of the museum site.

Description:
- These three drawings for the site and disposition of Swedenborg Memorial Chapel, El Cerrito, are executed on a diazotype contour map of the site. An alternate, more developed design was executed on two sheets of tracing paper joined together and attached to the diazotype. A small cut-out formerly attached to the sheets is probably an alternate plan for one of the buildings.
