Résumé:
In a manufacturing metropolis in south China lies Dafen, an urban village that famously houses thousands of workers who paint van Goghs, Da Vincis, Warhols, and other Western masterpieces for the world market, producing an astonishing five million paintings a year. To write about work and life in Dafen, Winnie Wong infiltrated this world, first investigating the work of conceptual artists who made projects there; then working as a dealer; apprenticing as a painter; surveying wholesalers and retailers in Europe, East Asia and North America; establishing relationships with local leaders; and organizing a conceptual art exhibition for the Shanghai World Expo. The result is Van Gogh on Demand, a book about a little-known aspect of the global art world—one that sheds surprising light on the workings of art, artists, and individual genius.

Résumé:
Deep Veils is an architecture monograph on veils, thickness, and envelopes in architecture as a counter narrative to transparency, openness, and clarity that underpin orthodox Modern architecture. The book features ten small projects completed in South East Asia between 2007-2012 that explore various architectural ideas under the rubric of “deep veils”. Each project responds to questions of envelope, surface, skin, form, atmosphere, perception and topicality. The projects represented within the book define in various ways how deep veils in architecture are manifest utilizing opaque and solid materials to produce forms of translucency, depth, and hazy atmospheres. Traced through the artistic legacies of Gertrud Arndt to Optical Art, the architectural theories of Gottfried Semper, Adolf Loos, and the work of Le Corbusier, Kahn, and Durell Stone, a new direction for architecture, perception, and thickness is put forth.

Résumé:
During the last decade, research on global cities has exploded throughout the social sciences. It has now become one of the most exciting, if controversial approaches to the study of urban life today. Fifty generous selections, including contributions from John Friedmann, Michael Peter Smith, Saskia Sassen, Peter Taylor, Manuel Castells, and Anthony King, explore the interrelationships between cities and globalization. The seven sections with accompanying editorial introductions guide the student through the key theoretical, methodological, and empirical debates. "The global cities reader" explores the major foundations and intellectual influences of research on globalized urbanization. Classic and contemporary case studies of globalizing cities from Europe, North America and East Asia as well as from emerging world city regions of the global South are presented. The political and cultural dimensions of global city formation are examined in separate sections. The reader concludes by examining the refinement and critique of global cities research in the last fifteen years.

Résumé:
For some 20 years, Kunming, a provincial capital city in China - 3.2 million inhabitants - has been the twin town of the European metropolis Zurich. As a direct result of this partnership, Kunming now has the first inner-city bus line in China, the first large-scale conservation of a historical part of the town, and new concepts for urban development at a regional level. This pioneering collaboration between western and Chinese planning teams, and the ways in which urban planning has been managed, are not only significant for Kunming but are of importance for all countries which are interested in sharing the expertise and knowledge of professionals whether they be from East or West, North or South, for countries which wish to benefit from western building practice whilst avoiding their mistakes. The challenge of such joint projects surely lies in the confrontation resulting from the traditional and historical background in large Asian cities together with their sense of modernity which has often surpassed the modern western world not only in terms of progress but also problems.
