Résumé:
This book focuses on the spatial character of the city. A brief survey of the history of urban development leads to the proposal of a methodology for the design of urban space, concentrating on the relationship of four elements: patterns, narratives, monuments and spaces. The book addresses the current debate regarding urban regeneration through the proposal of a flexible framework for the analysis of urban context and the integration of new interventions to create sustainable cities. This work draws on the dual expertise of historical research and design experience. Although contemporary practice in urbanism has many sources of design guidelines it lacks a theory which provides a flexible approach to the complexities of most urban situations. This book aims to provide a theoretical framework which looks beyond the style obsession of urban makeovers to the fundamental elements of city-making. The book will feature historical analysis, theoretical coherence, contemporary case studies, good illustrations and a physical context for citizenship.

Résumé:
Architectural design is not limited by geographical, economic or political boundaries. However, the majority of the architecture brought to the world's attention tends to be concentrated in a few countries and located in the wealthier nations of Europe and North America. This "Architectural Design" title seeks to present recent architecture that is situated beyond these familiar boundaries and outside the customary centres of architectural debate. It focuses on architecture that positively benefits from being at the periphery. By presenting work from countries as diverse as Iceland, Guinea, Canada, Portugal, Chile, New Zealand and India, it highlights buildings designed to respond to climatic extremes, remote sites and a broad range of social settings. It also identifies architects who are exploring the potential of materials and limited resources. This work has not only been sought out for attention, but is documented and connected through interviews with selected architects and international contributors who are designing, researching and building at the edge.

Résumé:
The suburbs house two-thirds of North America's population and are the subject of much debate and criticism. "Planning the new suburbia", by Avi Friedman, explores this phenomenon and proposes ways to respond to the challenge of creating affordable, adaptable, and environmentally sustainable neighbourhoods. An architect and planner, Friedman suggests new methods of design and regulation that would enable urban planners to conceive and inhabitants to adapt suburban communities and homes to their evolving needs, as a result of changing family size, an aging population, or new working conditions. Friedman surveys the evolution of urban planning, the history of "ideal" communities, the development of North American suburbs, and the theory behind flexible suburban design. Three case studies offer practical examples of his approach, and all are generously illustrated with drawings, plans, and photographs to demonstrate Friedman's ideas in action. Rather than dismissing a suburb as an unattractive, impersonal sprawl, Friedman shows how they can be modified into an affordable, sustainable, and adaptable community.

Résumé:
Once hailed as icons of radical experimentation and creative ambition, the concrete structures of the mid-to-late 20th century, which have become a defining subject of Stefano Perego’s photographic exploration, continue to stir both admiration and debate. Through the scope of his lens, Perego invites readers to reflect on the era that has shaped these relics of visionary modernism and the ideals they embody. Whether celebrated landmarks or forgotten outliers, enduring symbols of artistic ingenuity or imposing expressions of misappropriated power, Concrete, mon amour unpacks the intricate narratives embedded in these architectural giants. It considers their paradoxical nature: raw yet deliberate, unadorned yet unapologetically evocative. By capturing their permanence in diverse settings—urban or remote, pristine or weathered—this book compels a deeper interrogation into what sustains their continued relevance—their sheer monumentality, the audacity of their forms, or the honesty of their materials. Ultimately, the significance of these once-revolutionary visions lies not in answers but in the questions they leave behind.

Résumé:
Edition Bauhaus 46 When Dessau was bombed in early 1945, the Director’s House and Moholy-Nagy’s Master House were reduced to rubble as well. After the Dessau Masters’ Houses – epitome of the 20th-century artists’ colony – had been restored to their original state in the 1990s, a debate began on the reconstruction of the two houses destroyed in the war. In 2010, after consultation with the British star architect David Chipperfield, the decision was made to recreate the Master Houses of Gropius and Moholy-Nagy using contemporary means, rather than rebuilding them 1:1. And so they have now been reconstructed on the basis of designs by the Berlin firm Bruno-Fioretti-Marquez, as innovative reductions and abstractions of the original houses. This volume describes the chequered history of the Dessau Masters’ Houses, presenting the reconstructed buildings for the first time in book form, with photographs by Armin Linke and Heidi Specker.

Résumé:
An increasing group in contemporary society is rejecting agricultural production, as it exists today. Particularly prevalent, is the heated debate about conditions under which livestock is kept and slaughtered. Economic and ecological issues, animal and environmental protection, ethics and a (more) conscious meat consumption play an important role. The conflicts between these aspects must be negotiated in the public discourse, raising the question of which role architecture can play to improve this condition. The exhibition "Architecture for pigs" presents solutions for a modern agricultural pork production that meet the new demands of today’s critical consumer. In 2016, the organisers of an architectural student competition (KTBL and Stiftung LV Münster) began their research for new perspectives on agricultural architecture, livestock and societal engagement with agriculture. With this exhibition, Aedes Architecture Forum kicks off its 40th anniversary program. It is a continuation of the exhibition series on the role of architecture in the development of rural regions.

Résumé:
After the first EP volume on the activities of the early Italian avant-garde, the second volume in the series identifies the current fascination with fiction across art, design, and architecture. Practitioners and theorists explore this strategy by pushing the debate into both speculative and real-fictitious terrains. Newly commissioned interviews, artist projects, and essays shed light on topics such as parafiction and algorithmic ambiguity. Included in the volume is one of the final interviews to be published with novelist and semiotician Umberto Eco; a conversation with Bruce Sterling, in which the science-fiction author responds to designers who reference his writings; and design theorist Vilém Flusser's 1966 essay ''On Fiction,'' in its first English translation. The EP series fluidly moves between art, design, and architecture, and introduces the notion of the ''extended play'' into publishing, with thematically edited pocket books as median between popular magazines (''single play'') and academic journals (''long play'').

Résumé:
During the 18th century a remarkable group of women formed the Bluestocking Salon, where women and men met to debate contemporary ideas and promote the life of the mind. Together, these cultural innovators helped forge new roles for women as influential thinkers, writers, and artists, and their creative achievements were publicly celebrated. Richly illustrated with portraits, prints, and personal artifacts, "Brilliant women" tells the story of this fascinating group of women. The authors chart the changing fortunes of the female intellectual and explore how a number of bluestocking women, such as artist Angelica Kauffmann, historian Catharine Macaulay, and early feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, used portraiture to advance their work and their reputations in a period framed by the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. "Brilliant women" pays tribute to the friendships and achievements of these bluestocking women, presenting new information on the range of cultural activities in which they were engaged, as well as celebrating their legacy.

Résumé:
From 1932 to 1938, before emigrating to Venezuela, the artist Gego studied architecture and engineering at the Technische Hochschule Stuttgart. In 1955 — at the time, that is, when she began to become active as an artist — she wrote to her former professor Paul Bonatz, ”Even if I have strayed from architecture and found myself unable to master life through it, it has none- theless shaped me, to some degree at least. Even unhappy loves are of great value and have their effect.“ A few years later, MoMA in New York bought one of the artist’s first works. Today, Gego ranks as one of the best-known artists in Latin America. Conceptual approaches and practical ideas about architecture and processes of space creation have remained a constant theme in her art and have been the perennial subject of creative debate. This book is published in conjunction with the eponymous exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart.

Résumé:
If participation has been an ideal in politics since ancient democracy, in art it became central only with the avant-gardes emerging from WWI and the Russian Revolution. Politics and aesthetics are still catching up with each other. In the 21st century, since the revolutionary unrest of the 1960s, participation in art and architecture has lost its utopian glow and become the focus of a fierce debate: does 'participatory' art and architecture shape social reality, or is it shaped by it? Contemporary critics see in participation only technocratic control, while others embrace it as a viable politics in an era of global capitalism. This innovative book breaks the impasse by looking at how participants themselves exert power, rather than being victimized or liberated from it. From artists hijacking Google Earth to protesters setting up a museum of the revolution in Cairo, art, architecture and daily life are explored in their participatory dimension.
