Résumé:
Bettina Götz, the commissioner of the Austrian exhibit at the 11th architecture Biennale di Venezia, discusses the "Before Architecture" theme of the exhibition with three key case studies. Volume 1: Josef Lackner (1931–2000), whose uncompromising approach to architecture is examined in five of his buildings. PAUHOF (Michael Hofstätter, born in 1953, and Wolfgang Pauzenberger, born in 1955), whose conceptual work methods link utopias with reality creating added social value. In volume 2, the German architecture theorist and sociologist Werner Sewing explores the issue of residential construction as a neglected field of work in terms of perception and theory. His exploration of this subject in discussion with seven Austrian architecture offices also researches common practices in this field. The beautifully crafted, two-volume catalog in a slipcase is an enduring documentation of this subject.

He explores how the various modes of communication comprising architecture depend upon each other, combine, and form a unique subsystem of society that co-evolves with other important autopoietic subsystems like art, science, politics and the economy. The first of two volumes that together present a comprehensive account of architecture's autopoiesis

Résumé:
Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914-1973) is internationally renowned for his activities within the CoBrA and the International Situationist groups. Quite apart from his paintings, prints, ceramics and sculptures, Jorn produced a remarkable amount of theoretical work. His ideas are still extremely relevant to contemporary discourse. However, in contrast to his artistic oeuvre, Jorn's theoretical arguments have received much less attention from scholars of architecture, art history or philosophy. This book for the first time reveals this largely ignored aspect of Jorn's work. Jorn's opinions and motivations are subsequently contextualized within the theoretical debate of his time and are linked in the book to examples of built architecture, which influenced and informed his conception of architecture and urbanism.

Résumé:
This book brings together a diverse range of exemplary architectural projects from across the globe. Carefully selected and examined by a team of experts, these projects demonstrate innovative approaches that respond to the challenges and potentials of contemporary conditions and contexts. One guiding principle of this cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture is the importance of plurality. Since its inception the Award has aimed to be inclusive and to embrace the engagement of a diverse group of users. But equally, it has sought projects that explore a plurality of methods and architectures in achieving that goal. Here, the authors of the essays use that productive tension between architecture and plurality not only to provide a framework for the examination of the projects but also to explore the intellectual and projective means by which architecture and plurality can find other common grounds in the future.

Résumé:
Small stone hutongs, built within a courtyard-and-alley system, are emblematic of Beijing’s traditional inner-city architecture which still contends with modern, cooperate redevelopments to shape the character of the city. In one of the oldest cities in China, the important tasks of preservation and revitalization require particular sensitivity. Captured at the centre of the battlefield between development, conservation and renovation, the hutongs, on the verge of erasure, call into question the paradoxical nature of these paradigms.
