Résumé:
Some of the world's leading architects are making their mark on Los Angeles's cityscape with exciting and innovative projects. Fifty of the most striking buildings are profiled in this book that features every type of architecture - houses, municipal structures, art museums, office buildings, performance spaces, and houses of worship. Some of the world's leading design firms, including Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Eric Owen Moss Architects, Selldorf Architects, and wHY Architecture, have contributed to the city's structural vernacular. While the projects here are as varied as the luminous Walt Disney Concert Hall by Gehry Partners and Bestor Architecture's compact housing development named "Blackbirds," each building embraces an unmistakably Californian aesthetic reimagined for a new century.

Résumé:
.Damisch examines the origin of architecture and then its structural development from the nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries. He leads the reader from Jean-François Blondel to Eugène Viollet-le-Duc to Mies van der Rohe to Diller + Scofidio, with stops along the way at the Temple of Jerusalem, Vitruvius's De Architectura, and the Louvre. In the title essay, Damisch moves easily from Diderot's Encylopédie to Noah's Ark (discussing the provisioning, access, floor plan) to the Pan American Building to Le Corbusier to Ground Zero. Noah's Ark marks the origin of construction, and thus of architecture itself. Diderot's Encylopédie entry on architecture followed his entry on Noah's Ark; architecture could only find its way after the Flood.

Résumé:
Today the excitement in architecture derives from the tension between the need for privacy and the impulse toward community. This survey of buildings and interiors captures the multilayered experience that is engaged whenever we look out of—or into—a work of architecture. Immaterial World examines the built environment as a reflection of the terrors and pleasures of exposure, information overload, and abundance of every sort. Twenty-five projects from around the world by such well-known architects as Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Morphosis, Christian de Portzamparc, Renzo Piano, and many others, are presented. These works range from complete transparency to bunkerlike opacity, depending upon who’s doing the looking and who or what is being seen.

"Open: New Designs for Public Space" puts forth the simple proposition that new public spaces need not be the banal leftovers of design neglect. "Open" showcases the best recent public projects from some of the world's most talented designers, including Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, Craig Dykers, Peter Eisenman, Zaha Hadid, Walter Hood, UN Studio, Norman Foster, Weiss/Manfredi, and Will Alsop. More than 300 images illustrate a range of projects from memorials to new types of urban plazas and parks. Essays by Raymond Gastil, Linda Pollak, and Zoë Ryan, argue that the most successful urban spaces are those that combine large-scale operations and small-scale experiences, major infrastructure with recreation and culture, and grand civic events with intimate daily interaction.

Résumé:
An increasing number of people want to live in city centres, where space is limited. This causes architecture to grow vertically, creating new worlds on top of old roofs. Examples of this, seen on the Rhine riverbank in Cologne, Copenhagen and Graz, show how charming these new living spaces can look. Eight roofs from around the world are examined in detail, each covered with different materials: Adam Kahn uses wood shingles for his 'swimming visitors' centre; Diller Scofidio designs a park on top of a restaurant's green roof; Hopkins Architects gives the steel supporting frame of the Olympic cycling stadium a dynamic swing; Zaha Hadid wallows in Glasgow, with curves made of zinc sheeting and Jürgen Mayer H. is under huge umbrellas in the Spanish sun. In the chapter »technology« the complex supporting structure of the polyurethane-laminated, veneer-layered timber construction will be explained in detail.

Résumé:
A critical survey of contemporary museums, as well as a reference in the field of architecture. The book analyzes the design and production of museum complexes all over the world in the last decade, and gives a critical interpretation of one of the most challenging subjects in the recent architectural panorama. The work of the most important contemporary masters such as Alvaro Siza, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Massimiliano Fuksas, Renzo Piano, Steven Holl, Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind crosses the most recent research and experiences in the world of museums. The works of emerging architects such as Tezuka Architects, Mansilla & Tunon, Asymptote, Diller + Scofidio, Delugan Meissle, UN studio, Michael Maltzan, and many others shows clearly how museum design became a fundamental field of research on the changing nature of the public spaces as well as on the relevant relationship between landscape and architecture.

Résumé:
The "Atlas of never built architecture" features hundreds of the most spectacular unbuilt projects of the 20th and 21st centuries in a comprehensive, geographically arranged survey. At times impractical or fanciful but always imaginative and ambitious, the projects included in this ground-breaking book reveal the incredible diversity of ideas that have emerged from the world’s most influential architects. A vast array of imagery, from initial sketches and paintings to etchings and digital renderings, offers insight into how architectural projects are conceived and developed, and the book features a wide-ranging selection of projects, such as parliamentary buildings, museums, arts centers, skyscrapers, artificial islands, and city plans. Futuristic visions from the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, and Le Corbusier, sit alongside more contemporary proposals from talents such as Norman Foster, Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, Steven Holl, and Zaha Hadid to show how our built environments could have looked very different indeed.

Résumé:
A landmark in architectural publishing, "New York 2020" explores the planning and politics of building in New York City during the first decades of the 21st century. This encyclopedic book, as complex and vast as the city itself, references more than 3,000 projects constructed between the year 2000 and the present day. Across 1,500 pages, "New York 2020" describes and illustrates the "supertalls" now populating our skyline, lush riverfront parks born from derelict waterfront, iconic cultural destinations, and thousands of smaller, unheralded residential and civic projects that enhance the built environment and the urban fabric. Readers will discover work by leading architects, including Norman Foster, Renzo Piano, Bjarke Ingels, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Selldorf Architects, Frank Gehry, and Robert A.M. Stern Architects; a dazzling array of museums and institutions, including the High Line, Hudson Yards, the new Whitney Museum, and the expansions of MoMA and Lincoln Center; the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site; and more.
