Projet
AP178.S1.1996.PR01
Description:
This project series documents the Kolonihaven - Exposição ao ar livre in Copenhagen, Denmark. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 73/90 The office assigned the date 1996 to this project. At the end of the 19th century, there was an important migration of people from the rural areas to the cities in Denmark. Some migrants missed the contact with the soil and decided to built small houses with gardens to help them to adapt to their new urban life. These small Danish houses we're later named Kolonihavehus and became emblematic in Denmark. The exhibition Kolonihaven - The International challenge was held in Copenhagen by the Arken Museum of Modern Art. Fourteen international architects, including Álvaro Siza, Aldo Rossi, Mario Botta, Michael Graves, Arata Isozaki, and Leon Krier were invited to design a 7.5 square meter Danish house. Siza's design was based on his idea of a house as a child mixed with his memories of a trip to Scandinavia. The fourteen architects also participated in the exhibition "Major Projects" at the Køge Museum, in Køge, Danmark. The exhibition focused on the sketches and preliminary drawings of majort projects by each architect. Documenting this project are sketches and documentation.

Miscellanea
CI001.S2.D6
Description:
The portfolio 'Oeuvre de C. Rohault de Fleury', published in 1884 (DR1974:0002:029), is introduced by a succinct 'Notice Biographique', the author of which remains unknown. It provides valuable information on his family background and a narrative description of his major works (including unexecuted projects), illustrated by the accompanying unbound prints. The commentary is particulary informative concerning Charles Rohault de Fleury's work at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, the 1859 opera house project for the Théâtre Imperiale de l'Opera, and his innovative use of iron (reinforced) floors and roof trusses in both his public and domestic projects. Another copy of this portfolio is located in the CCA library. Album DR1974:0002:026:001-038 (1854-1858) contains drawings of architectural ornament by Charles and/or Georges Rohault de Fleury. Some of the drawing are possibly studies of ornament for Charles' architectural projects of the 1850's such as Hôtel Soltykoff, although others appear to be typical student drawings of classical architecture and ornament executed by Georges. Included are twelve drawings of architectural ornament and sculpture submitted by Georges to a newly introduced 'dessin' Prix d'emulation at the École des beaux-arts (see series CI001.S1: Architetural Education).

Projet
AP056.S1.1995.PR03
Description:
This project series documents a competition entry for the University of Waterloo Centre for Environmental Sciences and Engineering in Waterloo, Ontario in 1995. The office identified the project number as 9502. This project consisted of a proposal to create a new, environmentally sustainable campus building within the scope of the University's master plan. The integrated complex would consist of the five-storey Research Laboratories building and the four-storey Earth Sciences office building, interconnected by the three-storey Interior Street. Corridors in the Research Laboratories building would separate visitors from the rigorously controlled environments of the labs and act as a hub of student activity. Glazed walls would allow visibility into the labs from the corridor. The office building, with a café and museum at its ground level, would have loft-like offices with operable windows for more eco-friendly temperature control. Other ecological features were proposed including a breathing, green wall, the use of local, sustainable materials and a bio-reactor plant, among others. This proposal was never built. The project is recorded through drawings, presentation paintings, a model and some accompanying textual records dating from on or around 1995. The drawings are predominantly original sketches and presentation drawings.
