Résumé:
Pilot and photographer Alex MacLean has flown his plane over large areas of the United States, documenting the landscape from agricultural patterns to geometric city grids. Depicting not only the city's famous water towers, but pools, tennis courts, gardens, sunbathers, art, and restaurants up in the air, MacLean's images give readers a glimpse of a part of the city that usually remains hidden. His photographs leave little doubt about New York City's "green" potential and the belief that improved outdoor spaces above lead to more livable cities below. Maps and captions help the reader to easily locate the photographs, and an essay by Robert Campbell puts MacLean's work into context.

Where pictures stop being photography and become images. Olivo Barbieri has been working to represent space, especially urban space, since the 1970s. Various series of images document his research in this book. They include Viaggio in Italia, from the 1980s, a project directed by Luigi Ghirri; China (Far East), which looks at the big changes on the Asian continent; and Site Specific, a sequence of shots taken from a helicopter flying above the world’s major cities, which made him internationally renowned. The book retraces Barbieri’s themes and exploration, underscoring his constant attention to the idea of perception and his ability to envision and interpret reality. He casts quite some doubt over the conventional modes of representation through photography.

What does political agency mean for those who don't know what to do or can't be bothered to do it? This book develops a novel account of collective emancipation in which freedom is achieved not through knowledge and action but via doubt and inertia. In essays that range from ancient Greece to the end of the Anthropocene, Bull addresses questions central to contemporary political theory in novel readings of texts by Aristotle, Machiavelli, Marx, and Arendt, and shows how classic philosophical problems have a bearing on issues like political protest and climate change. The result is an entirely original account of political agency for the twenty-first century in which uncertainty and idleness are limned with utopian promise.

Résumé:
Design disciplines are challenged by the condition of the zero point. “Zero-context,” “cities from scratch,” and “zero-carbon” developments all force designers to tackle fundamental questions regarding the strategic relevance and impact of a design intervention. As much as the zero point presents naïve innocence and embodies contradictory notions, it also creates a ground for doubt, self-critique, and rejuvenation for architecture and urbanism. Along with the challenges inherent in the zero point, perhaps more meaningful are the provocations of the “after the zero” condition, which clearly marks the need to seriously explore fundamental inquiries regarding form and context (physical, social, political). After Zero is an opportunity to imagine alternative futures and a revitalized project for the city.

Résumé:
Through a carefully edited selection from a voluminous correspondence, A Model of Order tracks the unique arc of Finlay's development, from poet writing in Scots dialect, to Concrete poet, toymaker and deviser of poems and inscriptions in glass, wood and stone, installed in parks and gardens. The title derives from Finlay's famous definition of Concrete poetry as “a model of order, even if set in a space which is full of doubt,” a definition conceived in correspondence with poet Pierre Garnier. Poet and editor Thomas A. Clark's selection of Finlay's letters—to Louis Zukofsky, Robert Creeley and Ernst Jandl among others—explicates a rigorous and moral vision of the act of making.

Résumé:
The Tugendhat House in Brno (Czech Republic) was named by UNESCO in 2001 as one of the most important buildings of modern architecture and as a World Heritage Site. Mies van der Rohe designed and built it in 1928-1930 and it is beyond any doubt one of the pinnacles in his career. The authors describe the complex aspects of this house: personal, historical, art historical, architecture theoretical and restoration scientific ones. Most recent additions include personal reminiscences, photography experiments by Fritz Tugendhat and previously unpublished footage from the family mansion, the house's history after 1997, the conservation of scientifically important materiality of the house and comments on the methodology and techniques of restoration in 2010-2012.

Résumé:
Wood is without a doubt en-vogue with its impressive natural qualities. The residences presented in this volume are vivid manifestations of Frank Lloyd Wright's statements that wood is "universally beautiful to man" and "the most humanly intimate of all materials." The selected contemporary projects from around the world demonstrate the sheer endless possibilities for the use of timber in architecture and interior design. The shown architectural solutions emphasize the unparalleled advantages of this renewable building material, both in terms of design and function. Furthermore, they highlight the amazing versatility of wood, with a special focus on a large number of recently developed new techniques, processing options, and innovations. Above all, wooden architecture is a promising opportunity for architects to work towards a more CO2-neutral future.
