Résumé:
This volume looks at the close relationship between photography and the heyday of the Paris metro, covering over a century of photographic documents. The major figures of photography all snapped the Paris metro, from the humanists--Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassaï, Boubat, Izis, Kollar, Ronis and more--to photojournalists such as Robert Capa, William Klein and Van der Keuken, in addition to the scores of photojournalists who passed through the city. In 1900, as the first metro rolled from west to east across Paris, from Porte Maillot to Porte de Vincennes, photography had already been around for half a century. Turn-of-the-century technological advances had created smaller, lighter cameras--the first Kodaks--which introduced the practice to a wider market. As Parisians fell in love with their new mode of transport, photography became a more widespread pastime. All genres and photographic practices are represented in this overview, from photojournalism to photo stories, street photography, fashion photography, architectural photography and industrial photography.

Résumé:
As the Chinese Cultural Revolution ended in the mid-1970s, room for scientific freedom emerged, and Chinese paleoanthropologists turned their attention to the existence of Bigfoot- and Yeti-like mammals. This trend was fueled by widespread enthusiasm in Western countries for the same phenomena. The topic quickly captured the Chinese popular imagination, with scientists descending on mountainous areas of Hubei province to investigate reported sightings of a strange being called the Wildman or "Yeren" in Chinese. Officially sponsored research, followed by stories from amateur enthusiasts, sparked a nationwide phenomenon called Wildman Fever that would last for decades. Wildman Fever tells the story of this search that led a nation into a wilderness of fact and fiction. The images were selected from the collection of Chinese vernacular photography at the Archive of Modern Conflict, London.

Résumé:
This is the first book about the history, influences, and impact of the "Werkstatt für Photography" (Photography Workshop) founded by the Berlin photographer Michael Schmidt at the Volkshochschule Kreuzberg in 1976. In the midst of the Cold War, the Werkstatt initiated an artistic "airlift" to the United States, a democratic field of experimentation beyond the pale of traditional vocational and political-institutional standards. Those same years witnessed the establishment of infrastructures in West Germany that paved the way for the emancipation of photography as an art form. These included documenta 6 (1977), the first photo galleries and photography journals, and a number of pathbreaking exhibitions. Berlin, Hanover, and Essen played important roles in that process. All in all, the picture of a medium in transition emerges, a medium that developed an autonomous form of artistic authorship in the field of documentary. This book presents the story of German photography in the 1970s and 1980s, its international ties, its protagonists, and its networks.

Résumé:
In the early 1970s, Lew Thomas set out to disrupt photography in San Francisco. Tired of the mystical thinking and emotionalism that had underscored Bay Area photography since the 1940s, Thomas pursued a photographic practice grounded in ideas gleaned from conceptual art and Structuralist philosophy. A cohort of other photographers, including Donna-Lee Phillips and Hal Fischer, embraced Thomas’ mission, joining him in what became known as the ‘Photography and Language’ movement, named after a book and group exhibition of the same title produced by Thomas in 1976. This book is published in conjunction with an exhibition featuring photographs by these three artists that will be on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art January 4 – August 9, 2020, this volume assesses their work, their relationship to one another and their place in the history of photography in the 1970s.
