Résumé:
"The matter of time" documents Serra’s recent commission by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao of seven monumental sculptures for the largest gallery of the museum. Together with Snake (1994–97), the work that Serra created for the museum’s grand opening, the sculptures create a permanent, site-specific installation of a scale and ambition unrivalled in modern history. Through a revealing interview-essay by Hal Foster, and writings and statements by the artist about his recent series Torqued Ellipses and the present, unprecedented commission, the book discloses the last 25 years of this sculptor’s oeuvre and the evolution of his sculptural vocabulary as it relates to this installation. Other writings by Carmen Giménez and a chronology by Kate Nesin help contextualize Serra’s work.

Résumé:
In addition to his literary and fictional works, Fernando Pessoa wrote a multiplicity of theoretical texts concerning literature and aesthetics. In Writings on Art and Poetical Theory we see Pessoa exploring, under the guise of various heteronyms, general theories on poetics, the poetry produced by his other heteronyms, and the uses and abuses of criticism. Also included are essays on translation, the sensationist movement, and the history of English literature. This edition, prepared by Nuno Ribeiro and Cláudia Souza, provides a fascinating overview of Pessoa’s writings on art and poetic theory—most of which are presented here for the first time to English readers—thereby opening the way for future studies on one of the most significant authors of Portuguese modernism.

Résumé:
From building blocks to city blocks, an eye-opening exploration of how children's playthings and physical surroundings affect their development. What do youngsters lose when seesaws are deemed too dangerous and slides are designed primarily for safety? How can the built environment help children cultivate self-reliance? Alexandra Lange reveals the surprising histories behind the human-made elements of our children's pint-size landscape. Her fascinating investigation shows how the seemingly innocuous universe of stuff affects kids' behavior, values, and health, often in subtle ways. And she reveals how years of decisions by toymakers, architects, and urban planners have helped--and hindered--American youngsters' journeys toward independence. Seen through Lange's eyes, everything from the sandbox to the street becomes vibrant with buried meaning.

Working out of Beirut, they make their own rules for urban art with work that is, in the words of Peter Cook, “unnervingly original.” Projects include groundbreaking work in post-war Beirut and post-Communist Prague, sculptures for the sidewalks of London and Tokyo, a poetic project in Todaiji temple in Nara, and the Sandridge Bridge project on the Yarra River for the opening of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006. Their work in the creation of “dream pockets” has grown in importance, given the increasing number of cities that have to add violence and terror to the pressures of urban life.

Résumé:
Gyorgy Kepes (1906–2001) was the last disciple of Bauhaus modernism, an acolyte of László Moholy-Nagy and a self-styled revolutionary artist. But by midcentury, transplanted to America, Kepes found he was trapped in the military-industrial-aesthetic complex. In this first book-length study of Kepes, John Blakinger argues that Kepes, by opening the research laboratory to the arts, established a new paradigm for creative practice: the artist as technocrat. First at Chicago's New Bauhaus and then for many years at MIT, Kepes pioneered interdisciplinary collaboration between the arts and sciences- what he termed “interthinking” and “interseeing.” Kepes and his colleagues, ranging from metallurgists to mathematicians, became part of an important but little-explored constellation: the Cold War avant-garde.

Résumé:
The Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin is not only a museum but also an architectural milestone. The last building of the great German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969 is widely considered one of the most perfect statements of his aesthetic, with its monumental steel columns and cantilevered roof with glass enclosure. The Neue Nationalgalerie is especially famous for its 50 x 50-meter hall. There is no other van der Rohe structure in which the boundary between inside and outside is as porous as in this famous hall. This publication presents the building from today's perspectives, but also features historical photographs taken during the construction period, the building's opening in 1968 and the spectacular early exhibitions that took place there.

Résumé:
After following strangers on the streets in Paris for months, photographing them and notating their movements, Sophie Calle ran into a man at an opening whom she had followed earlier that day. "During the course of our conversation, he told me he was planning an imminent trip to Venice. I decided to follow him," she writes at the beginning of Suite Vénitienne, her first artist's book and the crucible of her inimitable fusion of investigatory methods, fictional constructs, the plundering of real life and the composition of self. This Siglio reissue is a completely new iteration of Suite Vénitienne (first published in 1988 and long out of print), designed in collaboration with Calle to be the definitive English-language edition.
