How do the spaces in which science is done shape the identity of the scientist and the self-conception of scientific fields? How do the sciences structure the identity of the architect and the practice of architecture in a specific period? And how does the design of spaces such as laboratories, hospitals, and museums affect how the public perceives and interacts with the world of science? « The Architecture of Science » offers a dazzling set of speculations on these issues by historians of science, architecture, and art; architectural theorists; and sociologists as well as practicing scientists and architects. The essays are organized into six sections: "Of Secrecy and Openness: Science and Architecture in Early Modern Europe"; "Displaying and Concealing Technics in the Nineteenth Century"; "Modern Space"; "Is Architecture Science?"; "Princeton after Modernism: The Lewis Thomas Laboratory for Molecular Biology"; and "Centers, Cities, and Colliders."

Founded in 1871 as one of the first full-fledged colleges for women, Smith is known for its beautiful campus set in an idyllic New England landscape. A walk around its grounds is like a comprehensive tour through American architecture from the eighteenth century to the present. The campus includes such diverse buildings as Peabody – Stearn's Queen Anne-style College Hall; the neo-Georgian Quadrangle by Ames, Dodge and Putnam; Skidmore, Owings – Merrill's International Style Cutter and Ziskind houses; as well as the postmodern Bass Science Center and Young Science Library by Shepley, Bullfinch, Richardson, and Abbott. The university's most recent additions include the Brown Fine Arts Center, designed by the Polshek Partnership; the Olin Fitness Center, by Leers Weinzapfel Associates; and the Campus Center by Weiss/Manfredi.

Résumé:
Peter C. Bunnell has been a major force in shaping the discourse about photography’s past and present. During his as professor and curator at Princeton University, he has written extensively. This collection of texts selected from work published throughout his career will make a significant contribution to the field that he has done so much to establish and to nurture. Most of the thirty-four essays are devoted to individual (predominantly American) photographers, with the balance written about three key galleries that played a crucial early role in the recognition and marketing of modern photography. The cast of characters and the approach vary from essay to essay, but in each case Bunnell brings to bear his own sensibility and insight. While encouraging the reader to see previously overlooked aspects of the individual images he discusses so eloquently, he also provides an invaluable historical context for the photographers and their work.

Résumé:
Canada's foremost architectural office Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects, founded in 1987 in Toronto, is one of most innovative architectural offices in North America today. They have made a name for themselves both for their integrated design process embodying collaboration with experts, clients and future users as well as the diversity of aesthetically refined and finely detailed designs. The work ranges from cultural institutions such as the Toronto International Film Festival and Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis to ecologically innovative concepts such as Manitoba Hydro Place in Winnipeg. A respectful approach toward the integration of heritage buildings is also a characteristic feature, illustrated by the designs for the Royal Conservatory and the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. Finally, educational and research facilities are a strong focus in KPMB's work, exemplified by campus projects in in Waterloo, Toronto, and Montréal, as well as future projects for the MIT and Princeton.

Résumé:
The Regional Plan Association has produced four comprehensive regional plans for the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut metropolitan region since its foundation in 1922. This book examines the evolving role of design in the first three plans and presents the design initiatives of the Fourth Regional Plan (2017) in depth. The new plan seeks to shift the focus of regional planning from a traditional center-to-periphery hierarchy to an expanded notion of "corridor" that includes transportation, ecology, access and equity. Funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, this collaborative initiative of the Regional Plan Association, Princeton University, and four innovative design teams produced design proposals for four regional corridors: the Highlands (forest corridor), the Bight (coastal corridor), the Inner Ring (suburban corridor) and the Triboro (city corridor). Looking forward to 2040, the Fourth Regional Plan imagines a transformed and vital future for parts of the New York City metro area that are little understood and often overlooked.

Résumé:
The work of Japanese architect Toyo Ito explores the dynamic relationship between buildings and their environments. His principal focus is on developing an architecture free of the grid system, which he believes homogenizes people and their lives. Toyo Ito: Forces of Nature documents the architects 2009 Kassler lecture at the Princeton University School of Architecture. Told primarily in Ito's own voice, the book features the edited lecture transcript, as well as an interview with the architect by Julian Worrall and a new translation of Ito's 1980 essay The Projection of the Profane World onto the Sacred. Projects illustrated in the book include: Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (unbuilt), Taichung Opera House, Tama Art University Library, and Kakamigahara Crematorium. Bringing together different strands of a long and fruitful career, Toyo Ito: Forces of Nature concludes with an afterword by Ito that addresses the exhibition Home for All, a response to Japans earthquake and tsunami disasters in March 2011.

Résumé:
In the decades after World War II, from just prior to the revolution and into the mid-1980s, modernist architecture blossomed in Cuba, attracting both native talent and leading international architects from Europe. Havana Modern examines Cuban modernism’s highlights with a wealth of archival materials, photos and new scholarship. Edited by Rubén Gallo—author of Mexican Modernity (2005), Freud’s Mexico (2010) and Proust’s Latin Americans (2014)—the volume is arranged in 10 chapters authored by current and former Princeton faculty members and graduate students. These essays, which arose from seminars organized by Gallo and historian Beatriz Colomina, examine Max Abramovitz’s American Embassy; Richard Neutra’s De Schultess House; Martín Domínguez Esteban, Miguel Gastón and Emilio del Junco’s Radiocentro; Mies van Der Rohe’s office building for Ron Barcardí S.A.; Vittorio Garatti, Roberto Gottardi and Ricardo Porro’s National Art Schools for Havana; Mario Girona’s Coppelia Ice-cream parlor and park; Vittorio Garatti, Hugo D’Acosta and Sergio Baroni’s Cuban Pavilion at Expo 67; Antonio Quintana and Alberto Rodriguez’s "Edificio Experimental"; and Aleksandr Grigorievich Rochegov’s USRR Embassy. Havana Modern draws on history, politics, culture, literature and film to elucidate this outstandingly rich era in architectural history.

Résumé:
Rafael Viñoly is arguably our most consummate practitioner of architecture; Herbert Muschamp of the New York Times calls him "the most elegant architect now practicing in the United States," one whose powerful buildings "quicken your awareness of the present and its untapped possibilities." In a breathtaking list of major commissions, Viñoly has taken projects of an often conventional nature-conference centers, recital halls, exhibition halls, sports facilities-and transformed them into unconvential works of beauty, notable for their lucidity, and often breathtaking technical prowess. This encyclopedic monograph, designed by Lars Müller in the same spirit as his "Peter Zumthor: Works", is the first on Viñoly, and includes projects in the United States, Argentina, Egypt, Korea, and Japan. Featured are the recently opened Kimmel Performing Arts Center-the new home of the Philaldelphia Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Convention Center, the Climate Prediction Center on the Palisades, the Princeton University Stadium, and the dazzling Tokyo Forum-the gracefully expressive building Muschamp describes as "an absolutist building, perfectly realized." An essay by Joan Ockman, Director of the Buell Center of American Architecture at Columbia University, introduces Viñoly's work, which is copiously documented in more than 500 color images and drawings.

Résumé:
"44 Low-resolution Houses" presents a series of houses through a double technological and representational-aesthetic lens. All 44 houses collected here fall into one or more of the following categories of low-resolution: first, houses that vaguely resemble houses, using familiar low-res house elements like pitched roofs, chimneys, windows, doors, porches, etc.; second, houses that appear to be constructed in a low-res manner, in that one can see the construction, joints, and materials, and have a sort of cheap unfinished quality; and third, houses that are composed of low-res organization with basic geometric primitives squares, circles, and triangles arranged in a non-compositional or abstract manner. By these using these terms, low-resolution is in contrast to high-resolution architectural sophistication, gestural complex curvature, bodily organic figuration, and architectural paradigms focused on seamlessness and integrated smoothness. "44 Low-resolution Houses" was exhibited at Princeton University School of Architecture from 09/11/2018 to 11/09/2018. The exhibition catalog was edited by Michael Meredith, with a foreword by Dean Mónica Ponce de León. It was designed by MOS and Studio Lin, with photographs by Michael Vahrenwald/Esto.
