Résumé:
This book recounts Stefano Graziani’s experience of finding Gordon Matta-Clark’s personal library while exploring the CCA Collection. The library consists of seventy publications that cover a wide range of subjects from architecture and art history to alchemy, communications, cultural studies, literature, philosophy, and psychology. In the first volume of the CCA Singles series, Graziani selects thirty titles that convey Matta-Clark’s universe. CCA Singles are short printed one-offs that present one voice, one object, or one event. Ranging from raw source material to edited topical reflections, they propose intimate contact with ideas generated or collected at the CCA.

Résumé:
What if someone looked at an actual building and said, “That model is very large”? Scales is the result of a commission by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), Montréal, given to Naoya Hatakeyama to create a work in response to photographs of architectural models in the Collection. The commission was issued in the context of the Tangent project curated for the CCA by Hubertus von Amelunxen. Tangent is a project constructed to bring contemporary artists into dialogue with the CCA's extraordinary collection. As described by von Amelunxen, the camera's eye, once it is trained on an architectural subject, acts as a tangent that touches a volume, a tangent that in turn undergoes a new tangential translation as it meets the gaze of a contemporary artist.

Résumé:
In the 1970s, early in his career, Appelt first saw the spectacular cantilevered steel bridge, a marvel of 19th-century engineering spanning over 8,000 feet and still in regular use today. Fascinated by its kinetic and cinematic appearance, when he was invited to reflect on the works in the CCA’s collection, Appelt took the opportunity to revisit the bridge. He reframed it in light of his long-standing preoccupation with the analysis of architectural constructs in spatial and temporal terms, producing 312 black-and-white 35mm film stills as well as sound recordings. Eight large-scale photographic panels will be presented at the CCA, each comprising a montage of 39 of the film stills edited so as to propose a series of horizontal and vertical readings of the bridge. A selection of albums and photographs from the CCA’s Forth Bridge archives will also be presented accompanied by drawings from Appelt. The beautifully produced publication includes essays by Dieter Appel, Hubertus von Amelunxen, and Louise Désy, as well as a forword by Phyllis Lambert.

// Every new transportation link and every change in systems of urban mobility introduces new infrastructure to the urban landscape: massive cuts enabling railway tracks to converge at a terminal or junction; wide railyards that service suburban and metropolitan transit systems; the proliferation of bridges, ramps, elevated highways, freeway cuts, parking lots, and even service stations. "Toys and Transport" draws from the CCA collection, presenting over 75 objects, among them historic toys, architectural photographs, illustrated books and pamphlets. It covers nearly 200 years of urban transformation brought about by the development of transportation systems.

Résumé:
What role can history play in contemporary architecture practice? ''Besides, History: Go Hasegawa, Kersten Geers, David Van Severen'' invites three architects to reread, redraw, translate, and appropriate from the past and from each other in order to construct relationships between and meanings out of a constellation of references. In their conversations, history becomes a tool that can be used in production, rather than just an object of study. The book features newly produced plans, sections, models, and perspectives for projects by Go Hasegawa and OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, juxtaposed with reference material chosen from the CCA Collection. Introduced and annotated by the architects, these images form a visual manifesto for a unique relationship to history.

This book unpacks the comprehensive Gordon Matta-Clark collection at the CCA (CP138), opening it up to provisional readings from different points of view. Yann Chateigné reorganizes Matta-Clark’s library into areas of inquiry, from alchemy to psychoanalysis, as a framework for gathering traces—written and drawn—of his thinking. Hila Peleg reassembles hours of discarded film footage, challenging the notion of documentation and returning to view the physical and social contexts—the relational space—of Matta-Clark’s interventions. And from hundreds of travel photographs, Kitty Scott constructs a panorama of Matta-Clark’s visual notes on the world around him—a foil to his artworks. In foregrounding seemingly incidental parts of the collection, these studies manifest an exploratory way of working with archives, by which selecting, presenting, and writing are processes of ongoing research. Rather than synthesize, CP138 Gordon Matta-Clark: Readings of the archive by Yann Chateigné, Hila Peleg, and Kitty Scott extends the scope of what constitutes Matta-Clark’s body of work and thus the physical and intellectual terrain within which to situate it.
