Oil is not new to Saskatchewan. Many of the wells found on farmland across the province date back to the 1950s when the industry began to spread. But there is little doubt that the recent boom (2006–2014) in unconventional oil production has reshaped rural lives and landscapes. While many small towns were suffering from depopulation and decline, others reoriented themselves around a booming oil industry. In the summer of 2014, at the height of the boom, geographer Emily Eaton and photographer Valerie Zink travelled to oil towns across the province, from the sea-can motel built from shipping containers on the outskirts of Estevan to seismic testing sites on Thunderchild First Nation’s Sundance grounds. In text and photographs, ''Fault Lines'' captures the complexities of engagement, ambivalence, and resistance in communities living amid oil.

Booksellers confront these new challenges with very different economic strategies and conceptual measures. Spatial concepts, furnishings and design are indispensable ingredients of a successful sales strategy for newer as well as more tradition steeped bookstores. People like to linger - and buy - where they feel comfortable. This volume is dedicated to the 35 bookstores in the world. The old and the new, classical and innovative, giant stores and paradises in miniature for bibliophiles: What they all have in common is that they create a desire for books and prove that the bookshop as institution will always fulfil a need and without a doubt enjoys a future.

In the south of Iceland is Landbrot, a place closer to fairy tales than to science-- indeed, a place easy to imagine as the singular source of fairies and elves worldwide. It is easy, too, to imagine the sensual comfort and satisfaction to be found there. "Mother, wonder" is the eleventh book in Roni Horn’s (born 1955) ongoing series "To Place," which she initiated in 1989 and exists only in book form. All the volumes focus on Iceland and the evolving experiences of the artist there; together they form a flowing dialogue addressing the relationship between identity and place. The titles to date in the coveted "To Place" encyclopedia are "Bluff Life" (1990), "Folds" (1991), "Lava" (1992), "Pooling Waters" (1994), "Verne’s Journey" (1995), "Haraldsdóttir" (1996), "Arctic Circles" (1998), "Becoming a Landscape" (2001), "Doubt Box" (2006) and "Haraldsdóttir, Part Two" (2011).

Résumé:
A travel guide for those in search of architectural quality, this book can be browsed in many ways. Written in a clear and concise manner by about thirty authors, it features a collection of editorials from the Canadian Competitions Catalogue (CCC), a large online digital archive open to the public since 2006. The editorials explore more than sixty Canadian architecture competitions held in the last seventy years. Especially in recent years, both public and private institutions have organized competitions across Canada, producing hundreds of architectural, urban planning, and landscape design projects. Together these proposals, most of which remain unbuilt, constitute a fantastic treasure in our tangible and intangible common heritage. Given that competition organizers, designers, juries, and critics never operate alone, there is no doubt whatsoever that this book results from the collaboration of a myriad of people, contributing to and competing for excellence in architecture.

Périphériques’ frequent participation in the international ArchiLab exhibition in Orléans and their contribution to the Architecture Biennale 2002 in Venice are sure signs of the national and international recognition which they are receiving. In 2000, Birkhäuser first published an overview of their architectural work entitled M.I.N.N.E.S.O.T.A. now out of print, and the time has come to document their latest works. This new volume describes Périphériques´ most recent buildings and projects. Amongst the realised buildings are the Maisons Icone and MR, the transformation of the Place Furstenberg in Paris, the Café Charbon in Paris, and no doubt the high point is the Cabinet d’art graphique at the Centre Georges Pompidou. Also included are a number of fascinating new projects such as the Small Towers in Tsumari, Japan, the concept for the Habitat shops in Paris and the urban plans for the new Parisian Cité Universitaire.

Résumé:
Without a doubt the most brilliant architectural innovator of his day, Sir John Soane (1753-1837) displayed a remarkable ability to adapt and modernize the language ofclassical architecture. The range of his built designs, from the ingenuity of his own house in London's Lincoln's Inn Fields (now Sir John Soane's Museum) to the opulence and originality of the Bank of England, places him on a par with other leading European neoclassicists, such as Ledoux and Schinkel. His architectural vocabulary remains infl uential to this day. Back in print, this landmark publication considers Soane's architectural achievements as well as his life and public role. It reproduces more than 100 of Soane's drawings and contains specially commissioned photographs of his original models and existing buildings. Contributors discuss all of the architect's major commissions, including the Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Law Courts at Westminster, and the Bank of England.

Résumé:
Whether or not you celebrated Christmas at some point during the last 70 years, you have no doubt encountered many of the scenes shown here in Lee Friedlander's eclectic black-and-white documentation of the holiday season across America. From city sidewalks to cookie-cutter suburbs, Friedlander captures it all: main street store window displays; plastic nativities on snow-covered lawns; inflatable snowglobes and Santa Clauses; questionable St. Nicholas–themed lingerie; oversize or underwhelming Christmas trees; and houses so covered in string lights as to demand nothing short of a miracle from the local power grid. As in all of his work, Friedlander's images of Christmas reflect his own version of the holiday. Is Christmas in America a religious celebration? A commercial precept? A misunderstanding? An indulgent blasphemy? Or all of the above? The only certain thing is that December 25 has provided an opportunity for the people's photographer to hold up a mirror to a flawed, inventive, preoccupied and wonderful society.

Résumé:
The original impetus behind this project was the desire to document the extraordinary richness, variety, and quality of Havana’s Art Deco’ architecture. Looking back at these photographs, photographer Duccio Malagamba is still glad he made the decision to undertake that adventure, despite the fact that the result of that effort, due to a series of circumstances, lay dormant for decades in a drawer in his studio. There is no doubt that, the documentary value of the photographs remains intact—or perhaps increased, since it is possible that over these 30 years some of the works portrayed have succumbed to successive cyclones and lack of maintenance. The valuable aesthetic and compositional charge of the images does not seem to have been compromised by the passage of time. Today, however, alongside with the worn beauty of the buildings portrayed, what captures the viewer is the life that has been encapsulated in these photographs. A life frozen in most cases accidentally.
