Résumé:
This book is the first to focus on Ossipoff's career, presenting significant new material on the architect and situating him within the tropical modernist movement and the cultural context of the Pacific region. The authors discuss how Ossipoff synthesized Eastern and Western influences, including Japanese building techniques and modern inspiration from the interplay of indoor and outdoor space as advocated by such architect as Frank Lloyd Wright, applying these to the concerns and vernacular traditions of the tropics. The result was a vibrant and glamorous architectural style, which is captured vividly in this volume in archival images and new photography.

Video is everywhere. Since its debut as a consumer medium in the 1960s, video has shaped our opinions, our politics and our societies. On our phones and computer screens, walls and streets, it defines new spaces and experiences—spreading memes, lies, fervor, fact and fiction. In other words, video has transformed the world. Featuring works from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, this illuminating exhibition catalog—MoMA’s first major publication on video art in nearly 30 years—explores the ways in which artists have both championed and questioned video’s promise, some hoping to create new networks of communication, democratic engagement and public participation, others protesting commercial and state control over information, vision and truth itself.

Résumé:
For Rebecca Bushnell, English gardening books tell a tale of the human love for plants and our will to make them do as we wish. These books evoke the desires of gardeners: they show us gardeners who, like poets, imagine not just what is but what should be. In particular, the earliest English garden books, such as Thomas Hill’s The Gardeners Labyrinth or Hugh Platt’s Floraes Paradise, mix magical practices with mundane recipes even when the authors insist that they rely completely on their own experience in these matters. Like early modern “books of secrets,” early gardening manuals often promise the reader power to alter the essential properties of plants: to make the gillyflower double, to change the lily’s hue, or to grow a cherry without a stone. "Green Desire" describes the innovative design of the old manuals, examining how writers and printers marketed them as fiction as well as practical advice for aspiring gardeners. Along with this attention to the delights of reading, it analyzes the strange dignity and pleasure of garden labor and the division of men’s and women’s roles in creating garden art. The book ends by recounting the heated debate over how much people could do to create marvels in their own gardens. For writers and readers alike, these green desires inspired dreams of power and self-improvement, fantasies of beauty achieved without work, and hopes for order in an unpredictable world.

Résumé:
In 1995, a scandal erupted when the New York Times revealed that the Smithsonian possessed a century’s worth of nude “posture” photos of college students. In this riveting history, Beth Linker tells why these photos were only a small part of the incredible story of twentieth-century America’s largely forgotten posture panic—a decades-long episode in which it was widely accepted as scientific fact that Americans were suffering from an epidemic of bad posture, with potentially catastrophic health consequences. Tracing the rise and fall of this socially manufactured epidemic, ''Slouch'' also tells how this period continues to feed today’s widespread anxieties about posture. In the early twentieth century, the eugenics movement and fears of disability gave slouching a new scientific relevance. Bad posture came to be seen as an individual health threat, an affront to conventional race hierarchies, and a sign of American decline. What followed were massive efforts to measure, track, and prevent slouching and, later, back pain—campaigns that reached schools, workplaces, and beyond, from the creation of the American Posture League to posture pageants. The popularity of posture-enhancing products, such as girdles and lumbar supports, exploded, as did new fitness programs focused on postural muscles, such as Pilates and modern yoga. By 1970, student protests largely brought an end to school posture exams and photos, but many efforts to fight bad posture continued, despite a lack of scientific evidence.

Résumé:
Shaping the Great City looks at modern architecture and the city in a vast geographical area over nearly fifty years of tumultuous social and political change, bringing to light architectural developments that are only now emerging as subjects for international inquiry. How did modern architecture construct “meaning” in relation to the complex cultural traditions, conflicting political agendas, and historical narratives of modernizing urban society in the cities of central Europe? What role did the cities themselves—as the principal arenas of public culture in the multinational, polyethnic, and pluricultural Hapsburg Empire, then in the successor republics—play in the evolution of modern architectural culture? These questions remain pertinent to the current relationship between cities and the increasingly diverse cultures within them, and to the role of the great city today in the age of globalization.
