Not until the fall of the communist regime in 1989 and the end of Czechoslovakia's cultural isolation did the world begin to appreciate the Czech avant-garde photographers of the first half of the twentieth century. This first survey of Czech avant-garde photography introduces the important work of František Drtikol, Jaromir Funke, Jaroslav Rössler, Jindøich Štyrský, Josef Sudek, and numerous others whose work made Czech photography synonymous with visions of modernity. The essays introduce the period and explore the background and connections among the photographers. Biographical profiles are also included. But the book's main attraction is its outstanding collection of duotone and color images, many published here for the first time. The Czech edition of this book received the "Best Photographic Publication of 1999-2000" award from Primavera Fotográfica in Barcelona and from Month of Photography in Bratislava and was one of six finalists for the 2001 Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Award.

Résumé:
"Viaggio in Italia," conceived by Luigi Ghirri and published in 1984, is a milestone in contemporary Italian photography, representing the "manifesto" of the Italian School of Landscape from the 1980s onward. The project tells the story of a generation of photographers who moved away from exotic travel, sensational reportage, and formalist analysis to focus on the everyday Italian landscape. This shift replaced the cliché of Italy as a uniquely wonderful place with an "anti-heroic, anti-mythical, everyday and non-rhetorical" image, as noted by Gabriele Basilico. Twenty photographers, many of whom gained international recognition, participated: Olivo Barbieri, Gabriele Basilico, Gianantonio Battistella, Vincenzo Castella, Andrea Cavazzuti, Giovanni Chiaramonte, Mario Cresci, Vittore Fossati, Carlo Garzia, Guido Guidi, Luigi Ghirri, Shelley Hill, Mimmo Jodice, Gianni Leone, Claude Nori, Umberto Sartorello, Mario Tinelli, Ernesto Tuliozi, Fulvio Ventura, and Cuchi White. The volume includes an essay by Arturo Carlo Quintavalle and a paper by Gianni Celati.

Résumé:
"New York in photobooks" gathers and studies a selection of images of the capital of the twentieth century, the most photogenic and most photographed city in history. In these images from the books selected (only a fraction of those in existence), the city of skyscrapers is captured from construction thereof in the 1930s to the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, alongside the urban life of the New Yorkers themselves, recorded in a model style of street photography. Many of the books are the work of European and Japanese photographers, who discovered multiple perspectives (human, cultural, social, economic…) from which to view the city that shaped the twentieth century. Nueva York en fotolibros is the catalogue of a traveling exhibition curated by Horacio Fernández, who is also the editor of the book: a collaborative effort in which, in addition to the many images, there are texts by numerous pho-tography scholars.

Résumé:
Most artists have, at some point, represented the universal symbol of creation which is the hand. Many of them have also chosen the hand as a recurring pattern in their work. This observation inspired Cécile Poimboeuf-Koizumi — editor and founder of Chose Commune — to gather the works that caught her attention in a book, following no thematic or chronological order. The selection was made in collaboration with Stephen Ellcock. From Pablo Picasso to Helena Almeida, from Louise Bourgeois to Alberto Giacometti, from John Baldessari to Francesca Woodman, and comprising a multitude of treasures from the ancient ages to documents from popular imagery, 'Jeux de mains' confronts and mixes famous, emerging and anonymous artists from a wide-range of practices. The result is a collection of more than a hundred images compiled intuitively in this book.

Résumé:
The Unphotographable is published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name at Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco, presenting photographs by anonymous amateurs alongside those of artists such as Diane Arbus, Bruce Conner, Liz Deschenes, Adam Fuss, Man Ray, Christian Marclay, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Alfred Stieglitz and Hiroshi Sugimoto. Jules-Bernard Luys and Émile David are represented by a photograph taken toward the end of the nineteenth century, of fluidic emission from the fingers of two hands; Richard Misrach captures a sandstorm in California in 1976; and Conner is represented by "Angel Light," one of the Angels series of dramatic, life-sized photograms he created in 1973-75, and which explore the disjunction between vision and phenomenological experience. Since opening in 1979, Fraenkel Gallery has presented close to 300 exhibitions exploring photography and its interrelations with the other arts, and The Unphotographable is one of its most ambitious projects to date. The catalogue is edited with an essay by Jeffrey Fraenkel, and includes 50 images in color.
