Résumé:
Sally Stein has long investigated the role of photography in relation to broader questions of culture and society. This first collection of her selected essays, ''Close-ups from Afar'', brings together essential writings from over five decades, cumulatively demonstrating Stein’s distinctive critical approach to the history and proliferation of photography and its role within mass media and contemporary culture. In this richly illustrated volume, Stein turns her astute eye to diverse topics including the rise of colour photography, the place of California in the history of the medium’s development, and women and photography between feminism’s ‘'waves'’, as well as insightful considerations of a host of photographers from Jacob Riis to Helmut Newton, Ansel Adams to Dorothea Lange, Susan Meiselas to Dawoud Bey. She has consistently sought to challenge readers to think afresh about the social uses of photography and their broader contexts and far-reaching effects.

Résumé:
At the turn of the 20th century, Vienna was a flourishing, modernist metropolis, its stimulating atmosphere carrying over into all areas of life. Jewish intellectuals, artists, and scientists had a marked influence on this creative fin de siècle climate. In this time, women also asserted their rights to establish their place in society. Women photographers, many of them Jewish, played a significant role, chronicling the city’s cultural and intellectual life. Accompanying an exhibition at the Jewish Museum Vienna, this collection of historical photographs documents the little-known significance of Jewish women in this progressive vocation.

Whether it’s cars, boats, animals, trees, fridges, bridges, bushes, fellow humans or even their graves--everything that can be touched will be touched. Containing 1.919 photos, this collection is far from ever being finished but provokes questions about the underlying motivations behind this universal pictorial behavior. Do we seek connection? Do we claim ownership? Or do we just want to measure ourselves to the objects of our world?

Résumé:
From scientific discoveries to animist beliefs, plants are an inexhaustible source of stories that reveal our most intimate desires and fears. Photography is the primary witness to his phenomenon. ''Science/Fiction'' questions human projections and representations of the vegetal world, bringing to light the subjectivity, intelligence and expressive abilities of plants. The publication traces a visual history of plants, linking art, technology and science from the mid-19th century to the present day through two conceptual frameworks: scientific and fictional. Bringing together more than 30 artists across different periods of time and parts of the world, it employs the logic of the science fiction novel, taking us from a stable, identifiable world and gradually plunging us into uncertain landscapes.

Résumé:
By highlighting specific creative approaches and studying the sites and collective platforms that enable these practices, this book examines the critical mass that has gathered across generations of African image-makers and lens-based artists. In accentuating different perspectives within this generation and considering the infrastructures that often link them, Recent Histories provides a point of entry to engage critically with current practices, and opens up considerations about how to conceptualize the frameworks of contemporary African photography and video art. Recent Histories features the work of Edson Chagas, Mimi Cherono Ng’ok, Andrew Esiebo, Em’kal Eyongakpa, François- Xavier Gbré, Simon Gush, Délio Jasse, Lebohang Kganye, Sabelo Mlangeni, Mame-Diarra Niang, Dawit L. The contributors -- international curators and scholars from a range of disciplines -- examine the emergence of photography as mass culture: through studios and public spaces; by the press; through editorial strategies promoting popular and vernacular photography; and through the dissemination of photographic images in the art world. The contributing authors discuss such topics as how photographic images became objects of appropriation and collection; the faith in photographic truthfulness; Life magazine's traveling exhibitions and their effect on the magazine's "media hegemony"; and the curatorial challenges of making vernacular photographs accessible in an artistic environment.

Résumé:
This illustrated book explores the cultural conditions for photography in Hungary in the first half of the twentieth century and the exodus of groundbreaking Hungarian artists, many of whom journeyed to Berlin, Paris, or London before settling in the United States. The story of the bounty of intellectual and artistic talent that departed Hungary during this period is told in depth, from the photojournalistic legacy of the Capa brothers and Martin Munkácsi to the deeply experimental work made in the United States by artists such as László Moholy-Nagy and György Kepes to the portraits of cinema icons by André de Dienes, including Marilyn Monroe, which helped fuel Hollywood’s Golden Age. The book also introduces the major but underrecognized talent of artists, including John Albok, Anna Barna, Ferenc Berko, Michael Simon, and Paula Wright.

Résumé:
Even before being printed in a book to narrate true life (as much as it may seem brutal or idillyc), or to recall the features of a face, since its early years photography has been “exhibited” to audiences. An history of photography narrated through exhibitions and the theory that has accompanied it has never been carried out yet. It would be very interesting, furthermore, to trace back the different aesthetic schools and communication theories that have pointed out the evolution of the history of photography and its public moments par excellence: exhibitions. Installations manifest values, ideologies, politics and aesthetics. An history of photography exhibitions would represent a different and original way of studying photography as a means of expression and contemporary communication. Nowadays photography plays its role on the art and collection market with an unexpected strength and vigour. The discovery and success of a new talent on the market depends on the common work of private galleries, public spaces and the international limelight. The activity of American and European Photography Museums, the numerous great art events and festivals – especially dedicated to the world and market of photography, art galleries that discover new talents and new ways of exhibiting them, all this contributes to a system that works perfectly well presenting new ways of expression for photography, actually widely recognized as heritage of humanity.

Résumé:
Once upon a time in America: Rediscovering the first color photographs of the New World. These rediscovered Photochrom and Photostint postcard images from the private collection of Marc Walter were produced by the Detroit Photographic Company between 1888 and 1924. Using a photolithographic process that predated the autochrome by nearly 20 years, they offered people the very first color photographs of The United States. Suddenly, the continent's colors were available for all to see.Over more than 600 pages including fold-out spreads, this sweeping panorama takes us from Native American settlements to New York's Chinatown, from some of the last cowboys to Coney Island's heyday.
