This publication unites Tchoban's own drawings--which range from perspectival-illusionist representations of his hometown of St. Petersburg to travel impressions, fantasies and visionary architectural studies--with highlights from his collection of works by European architects and painters dating from the seventeenth century, including Ferdinando Galli Bibiena (1656-1743), Filippo Juvara (1678-1736) and Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). Focusing on motifs of ancient, classicist and Baroque architecture, these works establish a fruitful dialogue with Tchoban's correspondingly broad production. Le Grand panorama de Lisbonne, œuvre extraordinaire, l’une des plus importantes de la collection du musée national de l’Azulejo, est un document d’une richesse iconographique unique pour l’histoire de la ville de Lisbonne. Elle présente la vue la plus complète de la capitale, se déployant le long du Tage, avant le tremblement de terre qui la détruisit en 1755. La contemplation de cette œuvre permet d’admirer des bâtiments et des lieux qui ont résisté à la catastrophe, mais aussi d’en observer d’autres ayant disparu, images d’un monde dont la fragilité nous est rappelée. Cette œuvre a été attribuée à l’un des premiers maîtres de la céramique baroque, le peintre d’origine espagnole Gabriel del Barco. Le panneau, d’environ 23 mètres de long, représentant 14 km de côtes d’Algés à Xabregas, nous invite à découvrir – au-delà des palais, églises, couvents et habitations – l’atmosphère générale de la ville lisboète en ce début de xviiie siècle, des zones les plus densément peuplées jusqu’aux campagnes et environs d’Alcântara ou Belém.

L’existence de ce témoignage de Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), sculpteur, architecte et peintre italien sur son séjour à Paris, n’était connue qu’à travers une correspondance que le cardinal Flavio Chigi, neveu du pape Alexandre VII, avait échangée avec sa nièce. On le pensait à jamais disparu. A la suite du tremblement de terre de mai 2012 qui secoua la province de Ferrare, la bibliothèque Ariostea fut endommagée et tous les livres et manuscrits qui s’y trouvaient mis en sécurité, ce qui impliqua un nouvel inventaire. C’est alors que ce texte fut redécouvert. Dans ce mémoire, inédit à ce jour, traduit de l’italien par le piémontais Filippo Prini, Bernin fait état de ses rencontres et de son appréciation, souvent négative, des Grands de l’époque. Il reproche entre autres à ses hôtes d’être aussi rigoureux que leurs monuments et de manquer de fantaisie. Mais il est vrai que le style baroque ne sera adopté que timidement et bien plus tard par les architectes français.

The book dedicated to Alessandro Mendini published by Corraini is a non-stop stream of images and occasions among the renowned Milanese architect’s works and philosophy. Designing horizons, rooms, bodies and thoughts are the four moments of a personal and evocative course through Mendini’s works: from urban landscape to interior furnishing, to body accessories, to his activity as architecture and design theorist, Mendini is a protagonist of a personal and aesthetic approach to the project. Antoni Gaudí (1852–1928) was a builder by instinct and by practice, fanciful and baroque in his sensibility, in love with the bright colours and plastic forms of the Mediterranean tradition. Despite his considerable contributions, Gaudí was an isolated figure in the architecture of the modern era. Critics were slow to recognize the prophetic value of his work, owing to the difficulty in reconciling it with the development of the Modern Movement. Gaudí invented a new form of modernism that combined elements of art nouveau, Catalan nationalism, Gothic Revival and his own relentlessly original imagination. His eclectic experience was made possible by special historical circumstances such as the economic prosperity of Barcelona and the existence of highly skilled craftsmen in Catalonia. This volume covers Gaudí’s work in systematic fashion, from the Güell Palace to the park of the same name, and finally to his unfinished masterpiece, the church of the Sagrada Familia. Author Juan José Lahuerta devotes an attentive critical re-examination of the architect’s work through a thorough analysis of his designs and writings.
