Four years after its initial release, Alice Rawsthorn’s bestselling book is republished in an expanded edition, updated in response to recent social, political, and ecological challenges worldwide. Fully revised by the author, the book is enriched by a new chapter on design’s response to the climate emergency, while also exploring the impact of COVID-19, rising inequality, and new developments in identity politics on design. The publication describes the resourcefulness and ingenuity with which designers are responding to complex and intersectional global challenges at an extraordinarily turbulent time. It offers a comprehensive survey of design today, with an appendix comprising more than 50 biographies of relevant living designers and role models for contemporary design.

Résumé:
With the publication of the Dymaxion House in 1929, Buckminster Fuller became an overnight sensation in the world of American architecture. It was an uncompromising design and spectacularly novel. The living areas were hexagonal and attached around a central supply tower, and the multistory interior was fully climate-controlled. The house was conceived as completely self-sufficient – all the necessary supply modules were contained in the tower, including water and wastewater, energy production, and air filters. The rooms were equipped with the most modern furnishings and fixtures. The approximately 150 m2 house weighed just 3 tons, cost no more than a car, and was designed to be constructed and dismantled anytime and anywhere.

To create a new skin several form studies have been carried out in a temporary geodesic dome, constructed in the yard of the studio. The final surface of the car consists of layers of ice, frozen around two intricate nets, mirrored plates and light. The “Climate car” can only exist in a microclimate with a temperature of minus 6 degrees Celsius or below. Including conversations between Olafur Eliasson and a number of distinguished thinkers, such as architect and artist Yona Friedman, urban theorist Bart Lootsma, and Head of Design BMW Christopher Bangle.

Résumé:
Providing hard data for trends that many perceive only vaguely and some deny altogether, Designing for Diversity reveals a profession rife with gender and racial discrimination and examines the aspects of architectural practice that hinder or support the full participation of women and persons of color. Given the traditional mismatch between diverse consumers and predominantly white male producers of the built environment, plus the shifting population balance toward communities of color, Anthony contends that improving the climate for nontraditional architects will do much to strengthen architecture as a profession. Practicing architects, managers of firms, students, and educators will learn how to create conditions more welcoming to a diversity of users as well as to designers.

Résumé:
Imagine a power plant that is also the perfect place to have a picnic. On the foreshore of St. Kilda, Australia rises just such a structure—one that merges renewable energy production with leisure, recreation, and education. This volume imagines a world where the infrastructures that power our cities are designed to be reflections of culture, where public parks provide clean electricity to the city grid, and where the art that brings depth and vibrancy to our lives also measurably responds to the challenges of climate change. ''Energy Overlays'' provides a glimpse into a post-carbon future where energy infrastructure is seamlessly woven into the fabric of our cities as works of public art.

Résumé:
"Mediating Environments" examines fundamental and radical environmental conditions in the Arctic and provides a spectrum of innovative design approaches and spatial outcomes. Climate organizes and sustains a broad range of activities in the Arctic, and it will dictate the future transformations in northern urban landscapes and their metabolic operations. As such, arctic urbanism must take into account the varied nuances of weather phenomena that are deeply engrained in everyday living practices and biophysical fabrics. By revisiting and reconfiguring the intersections between environmental and design systems, this publication aims to expand conceptual strategies in the arctic beyond the modes of insulation, stabilization, and optimization while repositioning the region as a central figure within the global network of exchanges.

Résumé:
In this collection, Solnit turns her attention to battles over meaning, place, language, and belonging at the heart of the defining crises of our time. She explores the way emotions shape political life, electoral politics, police shootings and gentrification, the life of an extraordinary man on death row, the pipeline protest at Standing Rock, and the existential threat posed by climate change. The work of changing the world sometimes requires changing the story, the names, and inventing or popularizing new names and terms and phrases. Calling things by their true names can also cut through the lies that excuse, disguise, avoid, or encourage inaction, indifference, obliviousness in the face of injustice and violence.

Résumé:
The positive effects of urban green spaces are well-known, ranging from the promotion of health, support of biodiversity to climate regulation. However, the practical implementation of urban landscapes is less discussed. How can we make these spaces functional, economically feasible and inclusive, especially as cities become more diverse? The publication explores strategies to reconcile the various demands, such as food production, resilience and nature conservation. Indeed, urban landscapes have to be restorative, ecological and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. This is a particular challenge in high-density cities like Singapore, Seoul or New York where space is a scarce commodity. The continuing growth of the worldwide urban population imbues the topic with a special urgency.

In car-clogged urban areas across the world, the humble bicycle is enjoying a second life as a legitimate form of transportation. City officials are rediscovering it as a multi-pronged (or -spoked) solution to acute, 21st-century problems, including affordability, obesity, congestion, climate change, inequity, and social isolation. As the world’s foremost cycling nation, the Netherlands is the only country where the number of bikes exceeds the number of people, primarily because the Dutch have built a cycling culture accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or economic means. Chris and Melissa Bruntlett share the incredible success of the Netherlands through engaging interviews with local experts and stories of their own delightful experiences riding in five Dutch cities.

Résumé:
By bringing together the voices of a number of curators, scientists, scholars, designers, and artists, the XXII Triennale di Milano seeks to engage its visitors with questions of climate change, migration, artificial intelligence, politics, gender, labour, economics, social justice, and natural histories. This exhibition catalog highlights objects and concepts at all scales that reconsider humans' relationship with their environment, including research into both natural and social ecosystems. The aim is to trace design's ability to move us into a more constructive sense of indebtedness toward nature. This volume will appeal to the design community as well as a broader readership and scholars who study the sociological, economic, political, and personal ramifications of design as it relates to the environment.
