Résumé:
Effective layout is essential to communication and enables the end user to not only be drawn in with an innovative design, but to digest information easily. Making and Breaking the Grid is a comprehensive layout design workshop that assumes that in order to effectively break the rules of grid-based design, one must first understand those rules and see them applied to real-world projects. Basics include composing typographic space, format determination, and sequencing and systemization. Various types of grids manuscript, column, modular, hierarchical are also covered. Text reveals top designers' work in process and rationale. Projects with similar characteristics are linked through a simple notational system that encourages exploration and comparison of structure ideas. Each project is shown comprehensively so readers can see its structure revealed over several pages, at a size that allows for inspection of detail. Also included are historical overviews that summarize the development of layout concepts, both grid-based and non-grid based, in modern design practice.

Résumé:
Andy Warhol, Susan Sontag, John Lennon & Yoko Ono — Jonas Mekas was well acquainted with a great many New York artists. Born in Lithuania, he came to Brooklyn via Germany in 1949 and began shooting his first experimental films there. Mekas developed a form of film diary in which he recorded his daily observations. He became the barometer of the New York art scene and a pioneer of American avant-garde cinema. Every week, starting in 1958 he published his legendary Movie Journal column in the Village Voice, writing on a range of subjects that were by no means restricted to the world of film. He conducted numerous interviews with artists, some of which will now appear for the first time in his Scrapbook of a Diarist. The book contains published and unpublished texts that reveal Mekas as a thoughtful diarist and an unparalleled chronicler of the day — a phenomenon that has continued now for over fifty years.

Résumé:
Inigo Jones (1573-1652) is widely acknowledged to have been England's most important architect. As court designer to the Stuart kings James I and Charles I, he is credited with introducing the classical language of architecture to the country. He famously traveled to Italy and studied firsthand the buildings of the Italian masters, particularly admiring those by Andrea Palladio. Much less well known is the profound influence of native British arts and crafts on Jones's architecture. Likewise, his hostility to the more opulent forms of Italian architecture he saw on his travels has largely gone unnoted. This book examines both of these overlooked issues. Vaughan Hart identifies well-established links between the classical column and the crown prior to Jones, in early Stuart masques, processions, heraldry, paintings, and poems. He goes on to discuss Jones's preference for a "masculine and unaffected" architecture, demonstrating that this plain style was consistent with the Puritan artistic sensitivities of Stuart England. For the first time, the work of Inigo Jones is understood in its national religious and political context.

Résumé:
Graphic designers love music. This is attested not least by the tremendous enthusiasm that readers of the typography magazine Slanted bring to its "Typo Lyrics" column, in which designers interpret music in entirely new ways with the help of fonts. For this publication of the same name, graphic designers like Fons Hickmann as well as young designers from all over the world have taken song lyrics and used them as the inspiration for innovative font designs. The result is a collection of visuals – "typographic images" that present contemporary fonts a little bit differently. The interplay of type design and music brings the fonts to life and practically sets them dancing. In contrast to classical pattern books and font fans, this volume provides a special, more emotional experience of typography and illustrates the great expressive potential of typefaces. On analogy with the traditional classification of fonts, the book is organized into eleven chapters, each of which treats a particular font family and song lyrics from a particular musical style.

After six issues, we decided it was time for something new. We've survived the baby's crying, the growing pains, the first waves of praise and criticism. We've written zillions of e-mail, exploited five interns and have hosted parties all over the world - a good excuse to get away from behind the desk and explore the local lezzeristic scene. We've been featured in various exhibitions and we almost opened a bar in Amsterdam: the GLU bar. It might still happen at some point but for now, well... we can't do everything! Our cosmopolitain networking put us in touch with a new breed of glowing lezzies who were the inspiration for our 'Fresh Faces' series. Since the inaugural GLU no 1, you have been submitting stuff for us to include - some of which has finally made it onto our new 'Famous Last Page'. And while all this was going on, many more thoughts and ideas crossed our mind. More Pictures! More sex! More laughs! More to read! More to watch! Bigger! Stapled! A centerfold! A column! Skaterboys & Latina chicks! So here it is: the fresh from the presh GLU no 7. And by now, we also felt it was time to tackle the lesbian topic de résistance: hair! Please let it all hang out...
