Résumé:
With nearly five millennia of architectural heritage, China boasts the longest continuous architectural lineage in history. A hundred years after the dawn of the 20th century, the urban landscape of the world's most populous country has now been transformed completely. The pivotal link between the ancient traditions of China's imperial past and the high-rise, glass-clad, lust-for-wealth that characterises China's 21st-century architectural aspirations is a period of modernisation that revolutionised its architectural language and urban fabric. Despite the fact that the reach of Modernism was as effective in early 20th-century China as elsewhere in the world, China remains conspicuously absent from written histories of Modernism - as Modernism does from written histories of China. Modernism in China confronts this by investigating China's unique experience of Modernism, its remarkable variety, striking contradictions and recurrent paradoxes. Modernism in China acquired its own unique language forged from geographical, cultural, historical and political circumstances. This extensive study analyses, for the first time, the role of Modernism in the development of China's architectural and urban landscapes throughout the 20th century and, consequently, offers valuable context to the country's recent resurgence.

In this 'Very Short Introduction' Andrew Dobson offers a lively and comprehensive commentary on the many facets of environmental politics today. Looking towards the future, he asks whether environmental politics will be comfortably accommodated by mainstream politics, or whether the advent of the Anthropocene - a whole new geological epoch driven by human impact on the environment - will herald a break with the politics of growth that has dominated social life since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

Résumé:
Álvaro’s Siza’s public housing projects, designed at great scale and complexity against the backdrop of the Portuguese Revolution, obliged him to articulate a position that was nuanced and ideologically forceful. Such projects developed over long periods, in response to shifts in policy, funding and political climate. For an architect whose work develops always through the iterative sketch, this challenging process, combined with the scale and cultural ambition of the projects themselves, produced the densest imaginable mass of drawings.

// The architectures and landscapes reveal the paradoxical chronologies that Ukraine cannot hide. As illustrated by the effect of 'decommunisation' post Maïdan, paralleled with the immediate establishment of the current affairs in Donbass, part of the history is suppressed to be immediately replaced with another. This book explores a Ukraine built in a diachrony, constantly modified by revolution and war.

Résumé:
Examining the revolution in photography that took place across Europe between 1918 and 1945, this survey orients its examination around three cities, each of which served as a nexus for major developments in the medium: Prague, Paris and Barcelona. Until the First World War, photography had largely followed the aesthetics of painting. During and after the war, such movements as Constructivism and Surrealism led photography to new frontiers, developing techniques and styles that explored the medium strictly on its own terms.
