Renowned as a playground for the rich and famous it was a world of swimming pools awash with bobbing beehives, martini-fueled parties, and relaxed games of golf, all unfolding against a desert backdrop. There, Doisneau took hundreds of photographs, twenty-three of which were published in the magazine. The rest have been rediscovered in his archives and one hundred are featured here for the first time. This color collection—which is supplemented with a facsimile reproduction of Doisneau’s original Fortune article—offers a new perspective on his photographic legacy.

Résumé:
The work of Belgian artist and photographer Geert Goiris straddles a liminal position between landscape and still life. Haunting and dreamlike, the sometimes alien images denote a fundamental tension between man and nature often bordering on the sublime. From seemingly composed scenes of various objects or portraits to architectural and natural landscapes, the images impart a sense of uncanny timing or discerning observation, achieving both qualities of suspended time and unspoken narrative. Included is ‘Myths, Places and Protagonists’, a collection of short texts by Goiris offering personal insight into how a number of the images came to be created or inspired.

Résumé:
In February 2024, Tacita Dean undertook a residency in the Cy Twombly Gallery at the Menil Collection in Houston. Designed by architect Renzo Piano in collaboration with Twombly, the Gallery houses a display of Twombly’s work organised by the artist to augment the building’s mood of disorientation and temporal suspension. For Dean, it is a site of pilgrimage and ‘a place to go out of your head’. Dean has loved the work of the American painter and sculptor since writing her art school thesis on him in the late 1980s. She photographed his studio home in Gaeta, Italy, in 2009, made a film with him in 2011 called Edwin Parker, and has written about his work on numerous occasions. During her time at the Menil, she asked permission to spend a night in the Gallery. "Why Cy" is a book of exuberant adoration, full of colour and black-and-white photographs that pay homage to this singular artist. It reflects Dean’s longstanding admiration for Twombly’s work and her close affinity with it, while at the same time taking a new, surprising, and unintended path. The book includes a booklet of notes by Dean developed out of her night with Cy, and coincides with the exhibition ‘Tacita Dean: Blind Folly’ at the Menil Collection (11 October 2024–19 April 2025), which includes a room dedicated to celebrating the connection between Dean and Twombly. Limited edition of 1,000 signed and numbered copies

Résumé:
The United States Department of Agriculture Pomological Watercolor Collection encompasses 7,497 botanical watercolor paintings of evolving fruit and nut varieties, alongside specimens introduced by USDA plant explorers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Assembled between 1886 and 1942, the collection's remarkable, botanically accurate watercolors were executed by some 21 professional artists (including nine women). Authored largely before the widespread application of photography, the watercolors were intended to aid accurate identification and examination of fruit varietals, for the nation’s fruit growers. Documenting the transformation of American pomology, the science of fruit breeding and production, and the horticultural innovations accountable for contemporary fruit cultivation and consumption, the USDA’s collection offers fascinating anthropological and horticultural insights concerning the fruits we ecstatically devour, and why.

Résumé:
How does twenty-first-century Germany deal with the remaining Fascist architecture of the 1930s and 1940s? Between 2001 and 2006, the German photographer Ralf Meyer created a collection of 130 photographs, taken at 32 locations across the country. The photographs were not intended to be mere reproductions of facades; instead, they were meant to investigate how German citizens deal with the results of the overwhelming historical architecture that surrounds them. Each one of the buildings Meyer sought out was constructed for an ideological purpose: can these implicit messages still be detected in the architecture? What is life like in and around these buildings, now that so much has changed?

Résumé:
The British botanist Sir Edward James Salisbury left behind a large collection of glass plate negatives, discovered in an anonymous stack of boxes in the attic of London’s Natural History Museum. Brought to the attention of Chrystel Lebas, for whom walking has always been a part of her objective approach (she brings two cameras, one for quick snapshots and another with tripod for panoramic views), they instigated a turning point in her career. This enticingly beautiful, complex book is both an artistic research project and a scientific inquiry. Tracing Salisbury’s footsteps, Lebas observes environmental changes in the British landscape by photographing the same locations a century later.
