Architecture photographer Takeshi Yamagishi’s first monographic collection presents his recordings of virtually every aspect of the collisions between architecture as the edge of artificiality and various forces of nature. The extensive series covers a period from the immediate aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 to the ongoing restoration efforts today, including measures against future catastrophes. It contains roughly 200 ultra-high-resolution images captured using 4 x 5 film, rather than digitally, and forms an impressive homage to the resilience and tenacity of the Japanese people, expressed through the built environment and augmented landscapes.

Résumé:
This book documents a unique long-term project that Swiss photographers Françoise and Daniel Cartier have been pursuing since 1998. They have put together a vast collection of unfixed photographic papers, glass negatives, and films, mostly dating from 1880 to 1990. Samples of these are mounted and displayed, and, over the course of several exhibitions, exposed to light causing them to evolve towards color saturation. This publication features the entire test catalog that the Cartiers have put together to date, showing some nine hundred different papers and photosensitive supports. These facsimiles offer an almost real impression of their formats, colors, and materiality.

Résumé:
American photographer Kaucyila Brooke finds sly ways to explore of the values of contemporary culture. In this collection, Brooke looks at the renovation of the display cases at Vienna’s Natural History Museum as an opportunity to record the layering of time and history, and to comment on what information our cultural arbiters – in this case, museum curators – see as important. As the museum transitions from the static 19th-century exhibition model to an interactive 21st-century style, Brooke makes knowing use of the reflections and transparency of the glass cases, and the disorder of their contents.

Résumé:
This artist’s book by Nico Joana Weber mounts an insightful and calculated photographic investigation into the dichotomy of rational (European) modernism in architecture versus the “irrational” proliferation of nature in tropical regions. Citing a range of historical and cultural references, from Le Corbusier’s visits to Argentina and Niemeyer’s Brazilian modernism, to the Amazonian expeditions of Lévi-Strauss, her vast collection of images points to how the fragile balance between architecture, the body, and vegetation inherent to the tropics shifts the separation between nature and culture so crucial to the Western perspective into the realm of the impossible.

Renowned as a playground for the rich and famous it was a world of swimming pools awash with bobbing beehives, martini-fueled parties, and relaxed games of golf, all unfolding against a desert backdrop. There, Doisneau took hundreds of photographs, twenty-three of which were published in the magazine. The rest have been rediscovered in his archives and one hundred are featured here for the first time. This color collection—which is supplemented with a facsimile reproduction of Doisneau’s original Fortune article—offers a new perspective on his photographic legacy.

Résumé:
The work of Belgian artist and photographer Geert Goiris straddles a liminal position between landscape and still life. Haunting and dreamlike, the sometimes alien images denote a fundamental tension between man and nature often bordering on the sublime. From seemingly composed scenes of various objects or portraits to architectural and natural landscapes, the images impart a sense of uncanny timing or discerning observation, achieving both qualities of suspended time and unspoken narrative. Included is ‘Myths, Places and Protagonists’, a collection of short texts by Goiris offering personal insight into how a number of the images came to be created or inspired.

City streets are perhaps the most paradoxically anonymous and personal of all public spaces in the city: people blindly collide in their rush to reach their destinations, while the homeless look for humanity amid the thousands passing by. Gary Stochl captures this daily drama in "On City Streets", an examination of the unpredictable people, places, and events that make up the streets of downtown Chicago. It is a stunning collection made even more so by the fact that this is the first work of Stochl's to be seen in his forty years as a photographer. Introduction by Bob Thall.
