Spangen Municipal Housing Scheme, Blocks I & V, Blocks VIII & IX, Rotterdam, Netherlands (1918-1920)
CI005.S1.1918.PR1
Description:
The Spangen Municipal Housing Scheme is a municipal housing project that the Spangen polder undertook with the help of several architects, including Oud. Oud's main contributions were modifications to Blocks I&V and collaboration with artist, Van Doesburg, for the colours. The master plan of The Spangen polder was created by P.Verhagen with H.P. Berlage acting as supervisor. Construction for the first 242 dwellings of Blocks I&V commenced in August 1918. Oud made modifications to a standard floor plan. Oud's main role in designing Blocks I&V was to organize the blocks as a whole and to make small changes to the floor plans, including the position of the windows and doors and the street elevation. For Blocks VIII & IX Oud also worked on the organization of the blocks. For Oud's second design of Blocks VIII &IX the gallery was accessed by the courtyard (Taverne et al. 2001,218-236). Project series includes drawings of plans for Block IX, as well as ground and first floor plans for Blocks I,V,VIII, or IX. Project series also includes photographs of exterior views of Blocks I , V and VIII, and a perspective drawing for Block I.

Description:
This project series documents the plano de Doedijnstraat, the residential settlement in Schilderswijk, The Hague, The Netherlands. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 63/80. The office assigned the date 1989 for this project. In 1993 Siza was awarded the Berlage Prize for this residential project of 238 flats. The project was part of an urban renewal program in The Hague for which Siza had already worked on other projects: the urban plan for Deelgebied Zone 5, Schilderswijk-West and Punt en Komma social housing; the housing and shopping complex in Schilderswijk; and the Van der Vennepark. Documenting this project are sketches, studies, elevations, plans and details. Textual documentation includes correspondence, such as letters to and from Siza, letters to Jeoron Geurst (from the associated architectural firm Geurst & Schulze architekten), and letters to and from project architect Carlos Castenheira. Furthermore, there is correspondence to and from members of the Woningbouwvereniging and several letters from Ing. J. van Gulik (project leader). Other documentation includes cost estimates and meeting minutes. Also included in this project series are negatives, photographs and slides documenting the model, site and various dwellings.

Description:
The project series documents the Habitações em Concepcion Arenal in Cádiz, Spain. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 61/80. The office assigned the date 1989 for this project. The project, located on Calle Concepción Arenal, consisted of two four-storey buildings on adjacent properties interrupted by Calle Botica (referred to as Block A and Block B in the project materials). Above Calle Botica, the two buildings reached toward each other with white visors on their roofs that shaded the street below. The project program described the buildings' use as commercial spaces and dwellings. Both volumes had interior courtyards that allowed natural lighting and cross ventilation for all residences. Towards the street, the buildings' lower façades were made from local stone, in stark contrast to the top façades in white plaster. The interior courtyards were faced in white plaster on all levels. The project is recorded through drawings, photographs, slides and textual records dating from 1988-1992. The drawings include plans, elevations, sections, details, axonometric drawings and sketches, while the slides and photographs mostly show the built project. Textual records include specifications, correspondence, reports on the protection of Cádiz's Old Town, and building programs.

Falk House (House II)
AP143.S4.D10
Description:
File documents an executed project for the Falk House, Hardwick, Vermont. This single-family dwelling for Mr. and Mrs. Richard Falk, was constructed on a hilltop near Hardwick, Vermont. Material in this file was produced in 1969 and 1970. Among the 103 conceptual sketches by Eisenman (DR1994:0130:001-103) are 36 large format conceptual drawings on tracing paper (DR1994:0130:068-103). Early ground and second floor plans for the house by Eisenman are probably presentation drawings, since they include a description of the functions of the rooms and furniture layouts (DR1994:0130:196-197). All of the second floor rooms have skylights, for which there are numerous design development details (DR1994:0130:207-220). Original working drawings include construction details (DR1994:0130:409-440). Among the numerous drawings for publication is a proposal for a cover of Casabella magazine (DR1994:0130:301). File contains conceptual drawings, including plans, elevations, sections, and axonometrics - many black felt-tip pen and/or graphite on yellow tracing paper and some black felt-tip pen on wove paper; and a sketchbook - many coloured pencil and/or black felt-tip pen on tracing vellum. Design development drawings include plans and axonometrics - many black felt-tip pen on blueline prints on wove paper; and reprographic copies - all blueline prints on wove paper. Presentation drawings include plans, elevations, and axonometrics - mostly pen and black ink on mylar. Drawings for publication include axonometrics - some black felt-tip pen on tracing vellum; reprographic copies - some photocopies on wove paper and some photocopies on mylar; and photomechanical prints - on wove paper. Working drawings include plans, elevations, sections, and details - many graphite on tracing vellum; reprographic copies - all sepia prints on vellum; and large internegatives of drawings. Photographs include a photograph of a model and a photograph of the finished building.

Description:
This project series documents the restoration of the Castro & Melo building in Lisbon, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 58/80 N 8/9. The office assigned the date 1988-1998 for this project. The Edificio Castro e Melo was part of Bloco A and identified as building 8/9 in the reconstruction plan of Siza. The structure of the building, originally built in the18th century in order to resist earthquakes, was rebuilt in concrete. Archival research was done in order to reproduce as much as possible the original style of the building. The interior of the building was reorganized to introduce dwellings. The first and second floors were kept as they were originally for stores and storerooms. The third and fourth floors were built for offices. The fifth, sixth and seventh floors were rearranged to introduce apartments to the building. The eighth floor was used for the technical equipment of the building. In 1996, Siza received the Secil prize for this building. Drawings include studies, working drawings, mechanical drawings, and details of finishes. Textual material includes project documentation, studies, and correspondence. Photographic material include images of studies, details of the interior and exterior, as well as construction work. It is important to mention that documentation can also be found in subseries Master plans and exterior spaces (AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS1) and Bloco A (AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS2).

Casal das Figueiras, Setubal
CD034.S1.1975.PR02
Description:
This project series contains seven reproductions of drawings displayed in the exhibit to document the Casal das Figueiras neighbourhood, in Setúbal, south of Lisbon, Portugal. The exhibit text explained that: ... the Setúbal port-city experienced the political vibrations of the revolutionary year with great intensity. The Casal das Figueiras neighbourhood was designed for a fishing community living in a difficult area to build on due to its steep incline. The challenge that the project architect Gonçalo Byrne faced was to maintain the structure of single-family housing with the outhouse or courtyard, the typology that the local populations requested, while making a large urban gesture. The proposal was based on two types of housing (the square and rectangular plans). This overcame the problem of the 36 percent slope in an architecturally striking manner, while it also managed to fulfil the major requirement inherent in any SAAL operation of minimizing costs. (The SAAL Process, Housing in Portugal 1974–76) Gonçalo Byrne worked for SAAL/Lisbon and Central South with Ana Ferreira Rebocho, Berta Sá Caetano and the residents' association Casal das Figueiras, that was founded on October 30th, 1975. The project included 420 dwellings. The operation began in July 1975 , with a construction date in October 1976. This project series contains reproductions of implementation plans and design development drawings. The original drawings were produced in 1978-1979 and were reproduced in 2015 for the exhibit.

Description:
This project series documents the Edifício Zaida Habitação e Comércio in Granada, Spain. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 98/90. The office assigned the dates 1998-2006 to this project. The project was divided in three components, each represented in the following project subseries: the Zaida building (AP178.S1.1998.PR03.SS1), the Caja Rural de Granada (AP178.S1.1998.PR03.SS2) and the Casa Pátio (AP178.S1.1998.PR03.SS3). The project, realized with local architect Juan Domingo Santos, redeveloped three ajacent parcels of land that faced the Plaza Puerta Real. This included the demolition of the nineteenth century Zaida Hotel that existed on the site and the incorporation of an existing nineteenth century courtyard style home (Casa Pátio). The project was built in two phases, beginning with the Zaida building in phase 1 and continuing with the Casa Pátio in phase 2. The Zaida building was six-storeys with commerical and office spaces on the first three levels and residential dwellings on the upper three. The two bottom floors of the building's exterior were constructed from grey stone, while the top four storeys were white stucco. The bank branch Caja Rural de Granada was located on the ground level of the building. While the architect sought to save and preserve the Casa Pátio, eventually it had to be reinterpretted and attached to the main volume. It was integrated with the main building using the same white stucco exterior.
