Résumé:
While destruction as a theme can be traced throughout art history, from the early atomic age it has remained a pervasive and compelling element of contemporary visual culture. Damage Control features the work of more than 40 international artists working in a range of media--painting, sculpture, photography, film, installation, and performance--who have used destruction as a means of responding to their historical moment and as a strategy for inciting spectacle and catharsis, as a form of rebellion and protest, or as an essential part of re-creation and restoration.

Made across more than six years, inadvertently the collection also documents the loss of local businesses and their distinct signage — some buildings razed altogether — often the fallout of Miami's real estate development churning inland. Along with that loss, so goes some of Miami’s unique history. Today, ''Under One Sun'' is a memory box for Miami’s locals, and a memento for its visitors.

Résumé:
Zygmunt Rytka (1947–2018) was an intermedia artist associated with the Polish neo-avant-garde of the 1970s and the independent artist community of the 1980s. In his conceptual work, he combined a philosophical and artistic study of nature and perception with ironic reflections on contemporary media and politics. The artist saw the camera as an instrument that creates a convention and begins to influence reality. The book—the first monograph of his photographic work in English— is a comprehensive collection including early conceptual cycles, works dealing with consumer culture, politically charged analytical studies of the language of mass media, and works focusing on the relationship between culture and nature. There is commentary on the cycles provided by notes from the author, an interview conducted by Anna Maria Lesniewska, and new texts by David Crowley, Karol Hordziej, and Daniel Muzyczuk.

Résumé:
This book explores a uniquely Roman type of building, the palazzina—a four- or five-story residential structure of the most meticulous design, built during the Italian economic miracle between the 1950s and ’70s. ''A Beautiful Game'' focuses on the extraordinarily imaginative entrances of these buildings. Over many years, Heiner Thofern (born 1959) photographed palazzine during his evening wanderings throughout the north and west districts of Rome. It was the intricately conceived and constructed entrances, realized mostly through collaborations between architects and artists, that particularly caught his eye. ''A Beautiful Game'' reveals the varied treasures of Thofern’s photographic archive, a rich collection that allows us to examine the particular sense of play and passion for beauty that shapes this era of Italian creativity, a delight in la bella figura, and a desire to constantly reinvent the possibilities of design and architecture.

"Mother's Land" is a collection of dioramas, of unscripted scenes in which we see a shifting 2010s China unfold before our eyes. It is, also, the result of a long, introspective journey that led Daniel Lee Postaer in search of a missing part of his identity—the one left behind by his grandparents who, more than fifty years earlier and fleeing the communist regime, could take along a daughter, but were forced to abandon another. In search of this "other half," Postaer lived in China in the early 2000s, and returned several times in the second half of the 2010s, becoming a first-hand witness to the country’s contemporary developments. In an all-encompassing portrait of urban China, in large-scale compositions embracing a multitude of characters and scenes, "Mother’s Land" shows us a country in the throes of economic and social transformations.

Résumé:
This pocket-size catalogue of the American artist Joel-Peter Witkin's inimitable work includes a selection of more than 50 astonishing photographs, a collection that expresses the artist's unique point of view on an extraordinary segment of humanity. Witkin's powerful and transgressive images are renowned for their depiction of outsiders including dwarves, transsexuals, hermaphrodites and physically deformed people. They are equally appreciated for their high aesthetic refinement, referencing classical paintings, Baroque art, Surrealism and other genres including still lifes and religious episodes. Witkin has said that his vision and sensibility were initiated by an episode he witnessed as a small child--a car accident in front of his house in which a little girl was decapitated. He has also said that problems in his family were an influence: his Jewish father and Catholic mother parted over religious differences.

Résumé:
For 30 years, David T. Hanson (born 1948) has made photographs that are widely celebrated for their powerful depictions of the American landscape and its dramatic transformation and despoilment by humans. His newest collection, Wilderness to Wasteland, presents four series of previously unpublished and unexhibited photographs from Hanson’s early work, made between 1982 and 1987. Atomic City documents the former nuclear boomtown in Idaho, site of the world’s first nuclear power plant and first reactor meltdown. The Richest Hill on Earth is a study of the vast copper mines, housing and surrounding wasteland of Butte, Montana. The eponymous series is a dynamic group of aerial and ground-view photographs of hazardous waste sites, while the final series, Twilight in the Wilderness, comprises spectacular night views of industrial sites for power production. Together, these photographs constitute a haunting meditation on a ravaged landscape.

"Units" contains photographs taken from 1994–2017. The images depict a variety of everyday materials and situations, many seen in sets, parts, or multiples. Within such scenes, Lower seeks out a kind of integrity (or lack thereof): standards of measurement, materiality, vague questions about the boundaries of entities and experience. A sign swallowed by tree bark, a small collection of funnels, a stove for sale in the sunshine. Where does one unit end and the other begin? It is certainly possible to be part of the whole and at the same time separate, existing with a foot in both worlds, but does this say anything about the units themselves, or only the way we define them? Graham Harman writes that such pieces are ‘terminal points, closed-off neighborhoods that retain their local identity despite the broader systems into which they are partly absorbed’.
