Résumé:
In 1909 the French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn launched a monumentally ambitious project : to produce a color photographic record of human life on Earth. An internationalist and pacifist, Kahn believed that he could use the new autochrome - the world's first portable, true-color photographic process - to create a global photographic archive that would promote cross-cultural understanding and peace. Over the next twenty years, he sent a group of photographers to more than fifty countries around the world, amassing more than 72,000 images. Until recently his collection was all but forgotten. Now, a century after he began his "Archives of the Planet" project, this book - richly illustrated in color throughout - and the BBC series it follows are bringing Kahn's early twentieth-century pictures to a wide audience for the first time, and putting color into what we usually think of as a monochrome world.

Résumé:
Madoka Takagi’s first monograph, "My place", previously existed only as a self-published artists’ book. The Museum of Modern Art and The Getty Museum each acquired a set for their permanent collection. Traveling throughout the city with an 8 x 10-inch view camera and making elegant contact platinum prints, Takagi may not have found happiness but she did start a story: a tale etched in light and metal about finding a place and making it special. From the Municipal Building to the Cathedral Saint John the Divine, from Coney Island to Roosevelt Island, from East Houston Street to Frederick Douglas Boulevard, from the Brooklyn Navy Yard to the Bronx Zoo, Takagi finds a city transformed by a magical light into a place of stillness and beauty. This book is a facsimile of one of the original artists’ books, printed in a limited first edition of 1,000 copies.

Résumé:
Regardless of his sitter whether family member or influential celebrity the portraiture of London-based photographer Nadav Kander (born 1961) shows what makes that particular individual human. His aim is to move beyond capturing an accurate likeness?to access the emotions within, the uncertainty, the shadow as much as the light, the complex sense of self that otherwise lays hidden. “Revealed and concealed, beauty and destruction, ease and disease, shame and shameless,” explains Kander, “These paradoxes are essential to all my work and represent what is common to all my varied subject matter.” This collection, the first book dedicated to his portraiture, shows the range and nuance of Kander’s work. His enigmatic depictions of actors, artists, musicians, authors, sports icons and political leaders?from Barack Obama, John le Carré and Alexander McQueen to Tracey Emin, Robert Plant and Prince Charles are layered and penetrating, revealing unexpected moments of reverie and vulnerability.

Résumé:
This volume documents 12 paper works made from the earliest expired photographic papers in the collection of New York–based artist Alison Rossiter (born 1953), created in honor of Anna Atkins, the first person to illustrate a book with photographs. The exact expiration dates of these papers pinpoint their location on a timeline and coexist with events in world history. No matter what the light-sensitive materials have endured through dormant years, they still respond to chemical development, and the resulting photographic tones are evidence of experience. Physical damage, moisture and mold produce tonal changes when developed. This book, a copublication with the New York Public Library and Yossi Milo, includes all 12 works from the series at actual scale, along with close-up details. The reference dates, which cover world events such as World War II, and art historical references such as Picasso’s Blue Period, are included at the back.

Between 1978 and 1982, in a departure from the collaborative conceptual work that he had become known for, Larry Sultan photographed people learning to swim in public pools in San Francisco. Initially inspired by black-and-white documentary photograhs he found in a Red Cross swimming manual, Sultan soon began exploring an urge to create pictures that were physical, sensual, immersive, and painterly. The resulting work is saturated with colour and inflected by the unpredictable forms and chance abstractions which emerge through the distorted refractions of the water as a second lens. Often beautiful and regularly unsettling in their ambiguity, the series builds to create a feeling of sensory immersion alive with the fluid and uncertain atmospheres to which Sultan was drawn. This collection presents all the pictures from the series Sultan himself chose and exhibited, and expands to include additional images he marked on contact sheets as well as further selections from his archive which he likely never even reviewed.
