Résumé:
For Sherry Turkle, "We think with the objects we love; we love the objects we think with." In "Evocative objects", Turkle collects writings by scientists, humanists, artists, and designers that trace the power of everyday things. These essays reveal objects as emotional and intellectual companions that anchor memory, sustain relationships, and provoke new ideas. This volume's special contribution is its focus on everyday riches: the simplest of objects - an apple, a datebook, a laptop computer - are shown to bring philosophy down to earth. The poet contends, "No ideas but in things." The notion of evocative objects goes further : objects carry both ideas and passions. In our relations to things, thought and feeling are inseparable. Whether it's a student's beloved 1964 Ford Falcon (left behind for a station wagon and motherhood), or a cello that inspires a meditation on fatherhood, the intimate objects in this collection are used to reflect on larger themes -the role of objects in design and play, discipline and desire, history and exchange, mourning and memory, transition and passage, meditation and new vision. In the interest of enriching these connections, Turkle pairs each autobiographical essay with a text from philosophy, history, literature, or theory, creating juxtapositions at once playful and profound. So we have Howard Gardner's keyboards and Lev Vygotsky's hobbyhorses; William Mitchell's Melbourne train and Roland Barthes' pleasures of text; Joseph Cevetello's glucometer and Donna Haraway's cyborgs. Each essay is framed by images that are themselves evocative. Essays by Turkle begin and end the collection, inviting us to look more closely at the everyday objects of our lives, the familiar objects that drive our routines, hold our affections, and open out our world in unexpected ways.

Résumé:
With its striking, gridded facade and amoeba-shaped internal cavities, Steven Holl's new dormitory for MIT, Simmons Hall, is without question one of the most original and idiosyncratic architectural statements of recent memory. A veritable catalogue of ideas—from the use of colour to experimentation with form and materials—Simmons Hall is an essay in architectural imagination by one of the profession's most celebrated practitioners. This detailed monograph will allow readers to deconstruct this complex marvel of modern design and construction. Steven Holl Architects/Simmons Hall is documented with sketches, models, renderings, working drawings, and photographs at a level of detail that allow complete and careful study of the project. Commentary by the architect and design critics explores both the technical aspects and cultural contexts of the building.

Résumé:
Roads that peter out in the middle of nowhere, buildings that no longer make sense, flotsam and jetsam that defy oblivion: Lukas Felzmann's scenery and objects quietly and unobtrusively open up their profound symbolism in the field of tension between desire and memory, hope and pain, dream and reality. Together they form a narrative that follows its own rules, subtly carrying the viewer along on a strange journey, where broad landscapes and deep horizons become expanses onto which visions of all kinds can be projected. Uncompromisingly printed in a small format deliberately set apart from the typical coffee-table picture book, "Landfall" is like a literary work, an existential analysis of the truths and illusions of our civilization, or a piece of poetry full of surprising encounters, whose ambivalence requires repeated reading.

Résumé:
In "Killing ground", John Huddleston embarks on a photographic odyssey through the modern-day landscape of the Civil War. He pairs historical images of the conflict from sixty-two battle sites across the nation -battle-field scenes, soldiers living and dead, prisoners of war, civilians, and slaves - with his own color photographs of the same locations a century and a half later, always taken at the same time of year, often at the same hour of the day. Sometimes Huddleston's lens reveals a department store or fast-food restaurant carelessly built on hallowed ground; other images depict overgrown fields or well-manicured parks. When constrasted with their mid-nineteenth-century counterparts, these indelible images challenge the meaning of place in American culture and the evolving legacy of the Civil War in our national memory.

A conversation about design, filmmaking, Afrofuturism, world-building, and other topics with Hannah Beachler, Academy-Award-winning production designer of "Black Panther". Hannah Beachler is known as an award-winning production designer, but she tells an audience that she considers herself to be more of a story designer. As film stills and concept art from a few of those stories--"Moonlight", "Miles Ahead", "Creed", "Lemonade", and "Black Panther"--flash across a screen, Beachler engages in a meandering conversation with Jacqueline Stewart and Toni L. Griffin about set building and curation, urban design, location scouting, Afrofuturism, fictional histories, and Black feminist narratives, and illustrates her role: a designer behind on-screen tableaux that provide not only visual feasts of artistry and imagination, but also intimate spaces of emotion, humanity, and constructed memory.

Victor Burgin is one of the most influential artists and writers working today. He came to prominence as a key ?gure in the Conceptual Art of the late 1960s. After turning to photography in his artistic practice he produced a series of groundbreaking theoretical essays that drew on semiotics, psychoanalysis and feminism in order to think through the ideological role of photographs in the production of beliefs and values, and in the understanding of memory, history, subjectivity and space. This collection brings together for the ?rst time Victor Burgin’s writings related speci?cally to the camera, following the shifts and nuances in his thinking over nearly ?ve decades. Moreover, it allows us to chart the evolution of what the camera was and is, and how its affects are to be understood.

Résumé:
Nikolai Vavilov anticipated the disappearance of plant diversity and within the space of a few decades through study and travel all over the world he found the means of saving it. For political and ideological reasons, Vavilov was condemned to death and left to starve in the dungeon of a Soviet prison. Gradually, on both sides of the iron curtain, his memory began to fade. One hundred years after Vavilov's first expedition, the photographer Mario Del Curto retraced his footsteps. For four years he met with those who, despite overwhelming obstacles, perpetuate Vavilov's seed prospecting, selection and conservation work in order to save the planet's staple food crops. This book is the unprecedented story of his journey to the heart of the Vavilov Institute and its twelve research stations.
