Résumé:
With Common Space, activist and architect Stavros Stavrides calls for a reconceiving of public and private space in the modern age. Stavrides appeals for a new understanding of common space not only as something that can be governed and open to all, but as an essential aspect of our world that expresses, encourages, and exemplifies new forms of social relations and shared experiences. He shows how these spaces are created, through a fascinating global examination of social housing, self-built urban settlements, street peddlers, and public art and graffiti. The first book to explicitly tackle the notion of the city as commons, Common Space, offers an insightful study into the links between space and social relations, revealing the hidden emancipatory potential within our urban worlds.

Résumé:
Photographer Camilo José Vergara has been chronicling the neighborhood for forty-three years, and Harlem: The Unmaking of a Ghetto is an unprecedented record of urban change. Vergara began his documentation of Harlem in the tradition of such masters as Helen Levitt and Aaron Siskind, and he later turned his focus on the neighborhood’s urban fabric, both the buildings that compose it and the life and culture embedded in them. By repeatedly returning to the same locations over the course of decades, Vergara is able to show us a community that is constantly changing—some areas declining, as longtime businesses give way to empty storefronts, graffiti, and garbage, while other areas gentrify, with corporate chain stores coming in to compete with the mom-and-pops.

Featuring a representative and graphically striking sample of the incredible range of letters, names, words and proverbs to be found on Amsterdam buildings, Typography and Architecture: Amsterdam in Letters is a compilation of more than 200 photographs taken by Dutch photographer Maarten Helle. By particularly focusing on typography that was specifically designed or commissioned by the architect of a building, Helle isolates an often forgotten aspect of architecture and of our urban landscape, as these elements are often visually subsumed by the louder yet more ephemeral typographic elements found on billboards, posters and graffiti. Helle's letters endure as architectural traces--often remaining when a building is repurposed--that represent an alternative history of the city. Born in Amsterdam in 1959, Maarten Helle began taking photographs of architecture, typography and Amsterdam in 1993.

Résumé:
Home to the New York Yankees, the Bronx Zoo, and the Grand Concourse, the Bronx was at one time a haven for upwardly mobile second-generation immigrants eager to leave the crowded tenements of Manhattan in pursuit of the American dream. Once hailed as a "wonder borough" of beautiful homes, parks, and universities, the Bronx became—during the 1960s and 1970s — a national symbol of urban deterioration. Thriving neighbourhoods that had long been home to generations of families dissolved under waves of arson, crime, and housing abandonment, turning blocks of apartment buildings into gutted, graffiti-covered shells and empty, trash-filled lots. In this revealing history of the Bronx, Evelyn Gonzalez describes how the once-infamous New York City borough underwent one of the most successful and inspiring community revivals in American history.

This outstanding collection of vivid political graphics from Argentina's Left Wing spans decades of political struggle--from woodcuts to desktop publishing. Flags are raised, workers are lionized, headlines blare from La Favilla, L'Agigatore, L'Amico del Popolo, La Questione Sociale, L'Allarme, Umanita Nova, Mundo Nuevo, El Burro, and Einstein, and a lion roars from the logo of La Protesta. The yellowed sheet music for a "Himno al 10 de Mayo" is preserved, as are a flier for Sacco and Vanzetti, a pileup of anarchy logos, many moving examples of homespun graffiti, and a collection of political cartoons, including one in which Labor pushes the pedals while Capital rides on the handlebars--with a champagne bucket. This chunky and cheeky volume is a must-have for anyone interested in graphic design, as well as left-wing politics.

Artistic genius, political activist, painter and decorator, mythic legend or notorious graffiti artist? The work of Banksy is unmistakable, except maybe when it’s squatting inthe Tate or New York’s Metropolitan Museum. Banksy is responsible for decorating the streets, walls, bridges and zoos of towns and cites throughout the world. Witty and subversive, his stencils show monkeys with weapons of mass destruction, policeman with smiley faces, rats with drills and umbrellas. If you look hard enough you’ll find your own. His statements, incitements, ironies and epigrams are by turns intelligent and cheeky comments on everything from the monarchy and capitalism to the war in Iraq and farm animals. His identity remains unknown, but his work is prolific. And now for the first time, he’s putting together the best of his work – old and new in a fully illustrated colour volume.

In City/Art anthropologists, literary and cultural critics, a philosopher, and an architect explore how creative practices continually reconstruct the urban scene in Latin America. The contributors, all Latin Americanists, describe how creativity—broadly conceived to encompass urban design, museums, graffiti, film, music, literature, architecture, performance art, and more—combines with nationalist rhetoric and historical discourse to define Latin American cities. Taken together, the essays model different ways of approaching Latin America’s urban centers not only as places that inspire and house creative practices but also as ongoing collective creative endeavors themselves. The essays range from an examination of how differences of scale and point of view affect people’s experience of everyday life in Mexico City to a reflection on the transformation of a prison into a shopping mall in Uruguay, and from an analysis of Buenos Aires’ preoccupation with its own status and cultural identity to a consideration of what Miami means to Cubans in the United States.
