Résumé:
This book is a real first in the world of architecture publishing. It is the first time that the work of Donald Judd has been fully expounded in an architectural context. As one of the most important exponents of American minimal art, Donald Judd (1928–1994) has exerted a lasting influence in the field of architecture. Among the lesser-known aspects of his work is a large collection of architectural designs that explore the relationship between architecture and art. Of special importance for Judd’s work in this field is a former military fort in Marfa, Texas, part of which he purchased and then, beginning in 1971, transformed into one of the largest existing ensembles of contemporary art. The Marfa buildings have for the first time been carefully measured and drawn to scale by the author and his students. Using standard CAD drawings together with historical and contemporary photographs, this volume illustrates Judd’s architectural alterations to the buildings in Marfa, and discusses and describes them in its accompanying text. The result is an invaluable source of inspiration for contemporary architecture.

Résumé:
Since the beginning of the 20th century, artists and architects have often been in collaboration. This relationship was not necessarily without conflict – on the contrary, a productive tension and friction can often be found at the basis of their common endeavors. However, wherever art and architecture establish a common territory in the public arena, highly integrated schemes may result that are of particular appeal and quality. In recent years, the barriers between art and architecture have come down even further; while many artists are attracted to the spatial presence of architecture and its language and scale, contemporary architects also seek the inspiration of art and include artistic concepts into their designs. Great works of art/architecture have resulted from these cooperations and this book explores them in nine chapters from 1914 up to the present, highlighting the most striking examples of these interdisciplinary activities such as the LACMA scheme by Renzo Piano/Jeff Koons in Los Angeles, the Chichu Art Museum by Tadao Ando with its installation by Walter de Maria, the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale by David Adjaye with artist Chris Ofili or the work by Keith Sonnier in the Munich Re Building by Baumschlager Eberle.

Résumé:
“Everything important that I have done can be put into a little suitcase," Duchamp said in 1952: finally, that suitcase is accessible to all. One of the most important and enigmatic pieces of modernist art, Boîte-en-valise was assembled by Marcel Duchamp between 1935 and 1941. The portable suitcase contains "the sum of his artistic work" up to that point. Perhaps in premonition of the coming war, and over years without a fixed address, Duchamp reproduced his work in a format that enabled him to easily transport his "complete works" at any time. Though the artist eventually made 300 copies of his box, many are behind glass in museums and private collections. This is the first ever reinterpretation of the legendary book-object, conceptualized by French artist Mathieu Mercier and now available to a broader audience. At once a work in and of itself, and a reproduction in the Duchampian spirit, this miniature museum contains 81 reproductions of Duchamp's creations, including the famous "Fountain," "Nude Descending a Staircase" and the "Large Glass." Mercier has reproduced the bulk of the contents of Duchamp's original box in paper form, designing everything to scale. Playful and accessible, the "Boîte" reflects Duchamp's desire to display his works outside the museum and gallery system.

This book is a stunning journey through Sápmi and includes in-depth interviews with Sámi artists, activists, and scholars boldly standing up for the rights of their people. In this illustrated work, Gabriel Kuhn, author of over a dozen books and interpreter of global social justice movements, aims to raise awareness of the ongoing fight of the Sámi for justice and self-determination. The first accessible English-language introduction to the history of the Sámi people and the first account that focuses on their political resistance, this provocative work gives irrefutable evidence of the important role the Sámi play in the resistance of indigenous people against an economic and political system whose power to destroy all life on earth has reached a scale unprecedented in the history of humanity.

The sixth issue of The Funambulist Magazine about “Object politics,” similarly to its third issue (January-February 2016), dedicated to “Clothing politics,” is dedicated to a scale of design that, sometimes, goes unnoticed in the examination of this relation: the scale of objects. Our bodies are surrounded by them, wear them, use them, and eat them. They are all precisely designed, and are involved in complex manufacturing systems, yet we often fail to address the political intensity of our interaction with them.

Résumé:
Buildings are more like us than we realize. They can be born into wealth or poverty, enjoying every privilege or struggling to make ends meet. They have parents - gods, kings and emperors, governments, visionaries and madmen - as well as friends and enemies. They have duties and responsibilities. They can endure crises of faith and purpose. They can succeed or fail. They can live. And, sooner or later, they die. In "Fallen glory", James Crawford uncovers the biographies of some of the world's most fascinating lost and ruined buildings, from the dawn of civilization to the cyber era. The lives of these iconic structures are packed with drama and intrigue. Soap operas on the grandest scale, they feature war and religion, politics and art, love and betrayal, catastrophe and hope. Frequently their afterlives have been no less dramatic - their memories used and abused down the millennia for purposes both sacred and profane. They provide the stage for a startling array of characters, including Gilgamesh, the Cretan Minotaur, Agamemnon, Nefertiti, Genghis Khan, Henry VIII, Catherine the Great, Adolf Hitler, and even Bruce Springsteen. The twenty-one structures Crawford focuses on include The Tower of Babel, The Temple of Jerusalem, The Library of Alexandria, The Bastille, Kowloon Walled City, the Berlin Wall, and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Ranging from the deserts of Iraq, the banks of the Nile and the cloud forests of Peru, to the great cities of Jerusalem, Istanbul, Paris, Rome, London and New York, Fallen Glory is a unique guide to a world of vanished architecture. And, by picking through the fragments of our past, it asks what history's scattered ruins can tell us about our own future.
