Résumé:
Owen Jones was, and still remains, an influential force in the world of architecture and design. His prolific work is captured here in its various stages through drawings, architectural plans, and photographs. "Owen Jones: Design, Ornament, Architecture & Theory in an Age in Transition" fills a gap in the history of Victorian design. In his early career Jones was recognized as an authority on Oriental design. In the 1850s he was commissioned to decorate the interior of Joseph Paxton's World's Fair Crystal Palace in London. Other projects include St. James' Hall, the Crystal Palace Bazaar, Osler's Glass Shop, and Eynsham Hall at Oxford. In 1856 he completed his "Grammar of Ornament", which remains one of the most influential works on design published and is a source for many artists and designers today. More than just an architect, Jones' skills were applied to designing interiors, books, textiles, furniture, and carpet.

Résumé:
This Atlas invites the reader to tour the farthest reaches of the rainforest in search of exotic—poetic—plant life. Guided in these botanical encounters by Francis Hallé, who has spent forty years in pursuit of the strange and beautiful plant specimens of the rainforest, the reader discovers a plant with just one solitary, monumental leaf; an invasive hyacinth; a tree that walks; a parasitic laurel; and a dancing vine. Further explorations reveal the Rafflesia arnoldii, the biggest flower in the world, with a crown of stamens and pistils the color of rotten meat that exude the stench of garbage in the summer sun; underground trees with leaves that form a carpet on the ground above them; and the biggest tree in Africa, which can reach seventy meters (more tha 200 feet) in height, with a four-meter (about 13 feet) diameter. Hallé's drawings, many in color, provide a witty accompaniment.

Résumé:
Urban Illustration features the most stunning and innovative street art from Berlin, where unknown local heroes and famous international street artists share a common canvas. In the course of documenting over 500 of the best examples of art work in the streets of this dynamic German capital, the book transcends it's core function as a city guide and becomes a magic carpet for armchair travelers and street art officionados alike. With a focus on popular techniques such as stencils, cutouts, markers and wheatpaste, the author Benjamin Wolbergs documents the diverse styles of artists including D*Face from London, Faile and Swoon from New York and Fuck Your Crew from Berlin, just to name a few. In addition to the images, 17 in-depth interviews give detailed information about the artists backgrounds and methods. A separate City map leads the way to the locations in the heart of Berlin where author Benjamin Wolbergs took his fascinating photographs, and where new street art is waiting to be discovered daily.

Résumé:
"Maps of the imagination" takes us on a magic carpet ride over terrain both familiar and exotic. Using the map as metaphor, Peter Turchi considers writing as a combination of exploration and presentation. He compares the way a writer leads a reader through the imaginary world of a story, novel, or poem to the way a mapmaker charts the physical world. "To ask for a map," says Turchi, "is to say, 'Tell me a story.' " The author looks at how mapmakers and writers deal with blank space and the blank page; the conventions they use (both the ones readers recognize and those that often go unnoticed) or consciously disregard; the role of geometry in maps and the parallel role of form in writing; how both maps and writing serve to re-create an individual's view of the world; and the artist's delicate balance of intuition with intention. The ancient Greeks, German globe makers, and British cartographers join forces with the Marx Brothers, NASA, and Roadrunner cartoons to shed light on the strategies of writers as diverse as Sappho, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, Vladimir Nabokov, Italo Calvino, Don DeLillo, and Heather McHugh. A combination of history, critical cartography, personal essay, and practical guide to writing, "Maps of the imagination" is a book for writers, for readers, and for anyone interested in creativity.
