Résumé:
In the last decade there has been a major reappraisal of the role and status of the photobook within the history of photography. Newly revised histories of photography as recorded via the photobook have added enormously to our understanding of the medium's culture, particularly in places that are often marginalized, such as Latin America and Africa. However, until now, only a handful of Chinese books have made it onto historians' short lists. Yet China has a fascinating history of photobook publishing, and The Chinese Photobook will reveal for the first time the richness and diversity of this heritage. This volume is based on a collection compiled by Martin Parr and Beijing- and London-based Dutch photographer team WassinkLundgren.

Résumé:
This volume presents more than 150 works from the collection of the Miami-raised and New York-based collector, art dealer and curator Charles Cowles. Spanning the breadth of modern photographic history from the early twentieth-century to the present, these works display a broad range of styles, processes and aesthetic intentions and an impressive number of concentrated strengths--featuring works by Atget, Arbus, Cartier-Bresson, Eggleston, Evans, Hockney, Frank, Mapplethorpe, Ruscha, Schorr, Sherman, Sugimoto, Warhol, Weegee and Winogrand, among many others. Renowned photography critic Andy Grundberg presents a precise analysis of the collection along with studied observations about the nature of photography and how it has become the art form that it is today. Cowles provides an engaging inside look at the development of a collection in an era when photography gained acceptance as an acknowledged art form. And Miami Art Museum Director Terence Riley contributes an introduction.

At the New Bauhaus and what later became the Institute of Design in Chicago, teachers like László Moholy-Nagy and György Kepes, and later Arthur Siegel, Harry Callahan, and Aaron Siskind, molded generations of groundbreaking photographers. This collection introduces the protagonists and institutions who have inspired, created, collected, and exhibited photography since the founding of the New Bauhaus in 1937. Surveying eighty years of photography from Chicago, the wide range of illustrations in this volume extend from conceptual and process-oriented series to material experiments and abstract photograms, and include contemporary works that reflect the continued importance of the Bauhaus school of thought in the present day. Marking the hundredth anniversary of the Bauhaus, this richly illustrated volume celebrates a school of photography that made history on both sides of the Atlantic.

Résumé:
As the Chinese Cultural Revolution ended in the mid-1970s, room for scientific freedom emerged, and Chinese paleoanthropologists turned their attention to the existence of Bigfoot- and Yeti-like mammals. This trend was fueled by widespread enthusiasm in Western countries for the same phenomena. The topic quickly captured the Chinese popular imagination, with scientists descending on mountainous areas of Hubei province to investigate reported sightings of a strange being called the Wildman or "Yeren" in Chinese. Officially sponsored research, followed by stories from amateur enthusiasts, sparked a nationwide phenomenon called Wildman Fever that would last for decades. Wildman Fever tells the story of this search that led a nation into a wilderness of fact and fiction. The images were selected from the collection of Chinese vernacular photography at the Archive of Modern Conflict, London.
