Résumé:
In view of the growing number of diverse life styles, the search for flexible, adaptable floor plans has become a fundamental issue in residential building. That the continued demand in urban centres can only be responsibly satisfied by high-density housing is undisputed. More than ever before, building high-density housing is a complex, diverse and challenging task for planners and architects. This book presents international projects which document the breadth and complexity of the task, from the design of the floor plans, the development and use of resources, to the use of economically beneficial building systems. The high quality of the architecture and construction in such residential areas can be clearly seen in the uniform illustrations of the floor plans, and large-scale drawings of details which facilitate comparison. The introductory contributions discuss extensively the difficult and provocative topic of floor plan design and development. This book is a comprehensive review of the current state of residential building, the perspectives, trends and future developments.

Housing for the people: what opportunities exist for this democratic ideal now that the scope for publicly funded architecture is being curtailed in so many countries by the free market? Who are breaking the boundaries to create innovative housing stock? Are attitudes changing towards what is possible? How are the employment of pre-fabrication techniques, materials and information technologies being harnessed? Or could the new alliances that are being hammered out between designers and housebuilders signal the onset of a new era of design-conscious private mass housing? With contributors writing on six distinct geographical areas –Australia, Japan, The Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and the UK – as well as emergency dwellings, a worldwide perspective is established. Contents : Agrest and Gandelsonas; Alsop Architects; Architectenbureau Marlies Rohmer; BKK-3 Architektur; Brunnberg & Forshed Arkitektkontor; Caples Jefferson Architects; Kerry and Lindsay Clare; de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM); Design Inc; FOB Homes; Gans & Jelacic; Alexander Gorlin Architects; Vicente Guallart; Hanrahan + Meyers Architects; Haworth Tompkins Architects; Kazuhiro Kojima; Marpillero Pollak Architects; Mecanoo Architecten; Mikan-Sei Homes; NL Architects; Oldhausen DuBois; Pasanella + Klein Stolzman + Berg; Proctor and Matthews Architects; Pugh Scarpa Kodama Architects; Sergison Bates Architects; Ken Smith; Stanisic Associates and Turner Associates; Stephenson Bell; Jens Th Arnfred; Thanhauser Esterson Kapell (TEK; Architects; Urban Affairs and Joep Mol Architects; Weiz + Yoes.

Résumé:
Thanks to an automatic reputation of lively urbanity, old neighbourhoods are extremely popular with residents. New buildings, however, can capture some of this charm too, like the variety of successful projects presented in this volume from the “best of DETAIL” series. In the end, it’s a question of mixed usage – residential and commercial as well as open spaces and opportunities for old and young residents of various nationalities and different social structures. Even in these times of an increasingly digitally connected society, urbanity still manages to express itself largely through diversity. In addition to surprising theses on high-density housing, this publication presents a refreshingly inviting selection of projects from around the world that would give anyone the desire to move to the city.

The SOLID Harvard GSD series gathers material from the four Symposia on Architecture held at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design from 2014 to 2016, entitled ‘All that is Solid’. This issue, the third and final part of the series, offers a close reading of the interior in the context of contemporary architecture. It contains recent projects and relevant voices in support of the importance of the interior and the intimate material knowledge architects must demonstrate. With contributions from Richard Sennett, Kiel Moe, Salmaan Craig, and Iñaki Ábalos, it not only reflects the current complexity and the challenges faced by the discipline, but also traces future paths to explore.

Résumé:
This paradigm shift is reflected in architecture as well: in recent years, increasingly innovative collective housing projects, organized around the principle of trading-in private spaces for larger, more luxurious shared spaces, have been emerging across the globe—many of them realized through bottom-up grassroots initiatives. The return of the collective in architecture has resulted in surprising architectural solutions that also create new urban spaces. "Together! The new architecture of the collective" presents around 20 international building projects from Europe, Japan and the US that provide innovative platforms for collective living in the present day. A selection of projects is discussed in detail, and extensive photo essays offer vivid impressions of the daily collective and private life and everyday routines in these buildings. Interviews with movers and shakers from the collective housing scene, written by international journalists, offer insights and background information on the processes and people that have made each project possible. All this is complemented by theoretical and historical context, including analytical essays by experts in the field, infographics providing facts and figures, diagrams explaining how different collective housing models work and an extensive timeline detailing the genealogy of the collective housing movement in the 20th century.
