Résumé:
The career of the architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) is underpinned by a dramatic increase in prosperity on the Venetian "terraferma" in both town and country, a boom due in large measure to a little-studied revolution in manufacturing. This book brings to light for the first time the architecture of these early industries, especially the production of textiles, mining and metalworking, paper manufacture, ceramics, sawmilling and leather-tanning. The huge surge in patent applications to the Venetian Senate in the period highlights the parallel technological improvements in both efficiency and quality. Former proto-industrial buildings across the Veneto, studied at first-hand, reveal the efficiency of hydraulic power and smooth-running mechanical processes. Water-power, a clean, renewable energy source, and structures made of natural, traditional materials, have much to teach today’s civilization.

Résumé:
In the tense days leading up to the 2020 American elections, then-candidate for Pennsylvania State Senate Nikil Saval addressed a virtual audience at the Harvard GSD to tell a story about Black feminist writer June Jordan and a little-known project that resulted from the aftermath of the 1964 Harlem riot. The events of police brutality and community grieving made a lasting impression on Jordan, who, while known for her work as a poet, playwright, and activist, responded with a proposal for a multiple-tower housing design. Through an unlikely partnership with R. Buckminster Fuller, Jordan's "Skyrise for Harlem" project offered a Futuristic vision for Harlem that argued for environmental redesign: "it is architecture, conceived of in its fullest meaning as the creation of environment, which may actually determine the pace, pattern, and quality of living experience."

Résumé:
This book uncovers the overlooked material practices that were crucial to architectural production in the eighteenth century. Centred on the architecture of England and Ireland, it examines the facing materials that define the distinctive character of cities and regions. Focusing on the final stages of construction—the external façade and interior finishes in stone, plaster, and wood—Architecture and Artifice combines archival research with insights from architectural conservation to reveal the hidden techniques behind these structures. It explores the lives of craftsmen, uncovering the unwritten standards that guided their work and argues for the agency of materials and craft in shaping the meanings of eighteenth-century buildings. Featuring a cast of lesser-known craftsmen alongside new perspectives on iconic structures such as Chatsworth, the Cambridge Senate House, and Dublin’s Parliament House, the book introduces a wealth of previously unpublished archival material uncovering the intricate processes and people behind the era’s most enduring buildings.

Résumé:
This book deals with `the historical anthropology of the ancient world', investigating the way in which Romans represented the founding figure of Romulus and the foundation of Rome in the mid-8th century BC, rather than examining whether it really did happen that way. Augusto Fraschetti presents the history of the foundation of Rome as it existed in the writings of historians such as Tacitus and Livy, by poets such as Ovid and by Cicero. In examining events in the life of Romulus, such as his war-making skills, his troubled relationship with the senate and the dismemberment of his body, Fraschetti asks whether authors exploited these episodes to comment upon actual events such as the assassination of Casear. This book is also about how Romans during the reign of Augustus, created their own history in order to account for and justify their future imperial glory, at the cost of their republican ideals. Appendices examine the ambiguous figure of Tarpeia and the archaeological discovery of a piece of wall at the foot of the Palatine Hill which has been dated to the 8th century BC. Translated from the Italian by Marian Hill and Kevin Windle.
