This project series documents the first scheme and final design of The Design Exchange in Toronto from 1988-1994. The office identified the project numbers as 8801 for the first scheme and 9231 for the final design. Although two project numbers were used, materials for each project cannot be clearly separated. This project consisted of the renovation, restauration and expansion of the old Toronto Stock Exchange building, located at the base of the Ernst Young Tower in the Toronto Dominion Centre. The Design Exchange (D/X) was a new cultural institution, dedicated to the economic and cultural promotion of design in the country through exhibits, lectures, banquets, trade shows and other events. With Shirley Blumberg as the partner-in-charge, the art deco style trading floor was restored as an open event space, with the original Charles Comfort murals retained. In order to create harmony between the art deco building and the neo-modernist renovations, bold, linear architectural elements such as stairs, walls, screens and bridges were reiterated throughout the design. A staircase from the trading floor led to an overlooking bridge and created a connection between the trading floor, trading gallery and resource centre. Other areas of the 40,000 square foot building included an exhibit space, café, member's lounge, retail store, seminar rooms and administrative offices. Coloured planes of cobalt blue, chartreuse and ochre were set against a material palette of red oak, cherry, limestone, glass and stainless steel. The project is recorded through drawings and photographs dating from 1988-1994. The drawings are mostly originals and include a large amount of sketches. Also included are plans, elevations, sections, perspectives, details and drawings for custom furnishings. The photographs show the completed interiors of the building.

Initially the brief also called for the erection of five pre-fabricated Wimpy kiosks, of which at least one and possibly two kiosks were erected. The restaurant building is a square, clear-span, steel-frame building with its own kitchen and store rooms, and includes a cafeteria, a full service restaurant and bar, and offices. The restaurant dining room can be converted from one large space into two by means of a curtain on a track, removable barrier rails, and mobile cash and cutlery units. The exterior is timber-clad with tinted glazing. Existing conditions drawings show the existing site layout, landscaping plans and plans showing water supply and electrical services. Design development drawings and working drawings include preliminary interior perspectives, site plans, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, utility plans, sections, elevations, axonometric views of interior, roof trusses, and structural system, construction details, and progress charts. Two sets of drawings that include plans, sections, and elevations, were possibly used for presentation purposes. Construction details are drawn on letter-size paper and show details for curtain tracks, exterior walls, and windows. A project schedule listing the remaining work is dated October 29, 1973. Consultant's drawings for catering, structural, mechanical, and electrical services are also included in the file. Over 300 detail drawings on letter-size paper are included in the textual records. - This album contains 21 transfer lithographs of contract and working drawings for the Chambre des Notaires, Paris. The transfer lithographs of the contract drawings (DR1974:0002:022:002, DR1974:0002:022:003 and DR1974:0002:022:005 - DR1974:0002:022:011) are signed by architects Charles Rohault de Fleury and Auguste Joseph Pellechet (Hillairet, 393), and by six unidentified hands, probably those of the contractors and/or client(s). Several revisions are evident between these transfer lithographs, dated April 1855, and the transfer lithographs of the working drawings, predominantly dated June 1855 (DR1974:0002:022:001 and DR1974:0002:022:012 - DR1974:0002:022:018). Minor changes have been made in the distribution of spaces on all floors, while more significant changes have been made in the dimensions and design of the façade bays (Bergdoll). Rohault de Fleury considered three alternate elevations (DR1974:0002:022:019 - DR1974:0002:022:021) for the principal façade with different column dispositions and window designs. The basic arrangement of the façade, however, remained the same: three floors each carrying a different order, separated by prominent entablatures and surmounted by an attic roof with dormer windows. The façade as constructed most closely approximates the elevations on transfer lithographs DR1974:0002:022:001 and DR1974:0002:022:002. The floor plans, with their detailed measurements, also correspond quite closely to the building as constructed (Bergdoll). The plans are particularly informative concerning the mixed use of iron and masonry construction. The "soubassement" consists of numerous masonry supports spanned by iron beams, while the "rez-de-chaussée" and "entresol" are constructed of iron columns, beams, and lintels allowing for abundant fenestration on the side façades (DR1974:0002:022:003 - DR1974:0002:022:004). The upper stories then revert back to a construction similar to that of the "soubassement".
