The Coming Insurrection is a strategic prescription for an emergent war-machine to "spread anarchy and live communism." Written in the wake of the riots that erupted throughout the Paris suburbs in the fall of 2005 and presaging more recent riots and general strikes in France and Greece, The Coming Insurrection articulates a rejection of the official Left and its reformist agenda, aligning itself instead with the younger, wilder forms of resistance that have emerged in Europe around recent struggles against immigration control and the "war on terror." Deeply moved by the richness of the architecture of these Eastern Europe countries, Erick van Egeraat set himself the task to develop a contemporary response to their architectural heritage. Connecting the demands of contemporary life with the quality of the historical surroundings, he defines his approach to architecture as ‘Modern Baroque’. Seeking to develop an architecture that can inspire, offering temptation as well as solace, the opportunity to work in the capital of the former USSR, and working closely together with the client, Capital Group, on a number of projects, the context of Russia today, has been proven to be completely different from previous experiences in Eastern Europe. The EEA Moscow projects seek to express a new sensuality, catering for the new lifestyle of Moscow citizen after generations of communism. The projects - housing as well as offices and entertainment- express a desire to bridge the potential gap between progress and development and the quality of historic architecture. The invitation to be part of the international competition for the extension of the Mariinsky theatre in St. Petersburg gave EEA the opportunity to further explore the possibilities of ‘Modern Baroque’. Challenged by the intricate detailing and materialization of the classical architecture of the existing theatre, and supported by extensive experience in theatre design in the UK and the Netherlands, the proposal for the Mariinsky is an example of Erick van Egeraat’s quest for contemporary architecture.

In this survey of the politics and meanings of urban landscapes, leading sociologist Göran Therborn offers a tour of the world’s major capital cities, showing how they have been shaped by national, popular, and global forces. Their stories begin with the emergence of various kinds of nation-state, each with its own special capital city problematic. In turn, radical shifts of power have impacted on these cities’ development, in popular urban reforms or movements of protest and resistance; in the rise and fall of fascism and military dictatorships; and the coming and going of Communism. Therborn also analyzes global moments of urban formation, of historical globalized nationalism, as well as the cities of current global image capitalism and their variations of skyscraping, gating, and displays of novelty. Through a global, historical lens, and with a thematic range extending from the mutations of modernist architecture to the contemporary return of urban revolutions, Therborn questions received assumptions about the source, manifestations, and reach of urban power, combining perspectives on politics, sociology, urban planning, architecture, and urban iconography. He argues that, at a time when they seem to be moving apart, there is a strong link between the city and the nation-state, and that the current globalization of cities is largely driven by the global aspirations of politicians as well as those of national and local capital.
