AP018.S1.1982.PR19
Description:
This project series documents the design and construction of the Hôtel de la Délégation in Algiers, Algeria from 1982-1985. The office identified the project number as 8220. This hotel was designed with inspiration from traditional Maghrebian and Middle Eastern architecture but made in the modern style. The site for the project consisted of the hotel, a neighbouring villa, a separate office complex, a roundabout at the entrance, two pools, tennis courts, gardens and, an arcade. The project proposed several variations on the design for the hotel, including an eight-level option and a ten-level option, the latter adding two levels of parking to the bottom of the building. The hotel was built into a hill so floors that were subterranean on one side of the building were above ground on the other. This latter side had terraced pergolas at every level with views over the pool. The hotel had a multi-level atrium that contained elaborate indoor gardens and trees. While the ground floor was made up of conference rooms, banquet halls and the reception area, the other levels mostly contained hotel rooms. This project was commissioned by Lavalin International Inc. for the Algerian government, who are referred to in the records as the Présidence de la République, République Algérienne, Démocratique et Populaire. The project is also referred to as Hôtel Alger in the project documentation. The project is recorded through drawings, photographic materials and textual records dating from 1982-1985. Almost all of the records are in French, with the exception of a few interoffice communications. While there are construction drawings in the project materials, there are also a large number of design drawings showing different schemes and ideas for the hotel. The photographic materials include construction progress photos of the hotel. The textual records consist of correspondence, meeting reports, pre-design records and the project scope, financial documentation, schedules, interoffice letters, construction and detail planning records, specifications and progress reports. Box AP018.S1.1982.PR19.041 in this project series includes an index to the textual materials, which was created by the office.

The project series documents Abalos & Herreros’ competition entry organised by the Cabinet of Andalucia for the underground in Málaga, Spain. The firm identified this project as number 172. “The stations are the masterpieces of the interaction between the peasant and the new infrastructure. […] A diversity of additive materials – combinations opaque or luminous, translucent or transparent, vegetal or aerial – make of [Abalos & Herreros’] proposal an elaborate sting operation that can adaptate [sic] to every imaginable circumstances looking for an agreement of highest coincidence between underground stations and the surface. The building and finishing coincidence between underground stations and the surface. The building and finishing system not only pretends [sic] an unitary image for all the underground web, but also constitutes itself an orientation code, an indicator for movement, a locator of accesses and a resource of orientation in town.” (ARCH270975). The firm worked with Mike Schlaich and Schlaich Bergermann und Partner (Stuttgart). Documenting the project are conceptual drawings, correspondence, specifications, cartographic and digital materials.

Description:
This project subseries documents the Piscina Pública in Pedras Salgadas, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 50/00. The office assigned the dates 2008-2010 to this project. This project consisted of two outdoor public pools for the Pedras Salgadas Spa and Nature Park. One large pool was built for adults and a smaller children's pool sat diagonally from it. A small building that contained a bar was also built next to the pools. The project was realized. This project subseries is documented through drawings, photographic materials and textual records dating from 2007-2010. The drawings are mostly printed reprographic copies of CAD drawings, many of which have annotations, showing plans and details. The photographic materials, which are printed digital photos, show the site and construction. The textual records include technical documentation for the water, fire and gas systems, structural and electrical documentation, supplier catalogues, budgets, specifications and correspondence.

Description:
This project series documents the first phase of development for renovations to the Stratford Festival Theatre in Stratford, Ontario in 1988. The office identified the project number as 8806. Conceived with Thomas Payne as the partner-in-charge, this project consisted of the master plan for future renovations to the famous tent-shaped theatre. The proposed renovations included a new, larger lobby, improvements to the entrance and arrival area, landscaping and the addition of a marquee space. The plan divided these renovations into several phases, the last of which proposed the addition of a new museum space. The realization of this project began in 1994, and was completed under a different project number (see project series AP056.S1.1994.PR14 in this fonds). The project is recorded through drawings and photographic materials dating from on or around 1988, with one drawing from 1995. The drawings include sketches, presentation drawings, plans, elevations and sections. The photographic materials consist of an aerial site photograph and studies of the project model.
