Résumé:
This book presents innovative examples of hidden architecture: buildings that are designed to disappear into their surroundings or hide in plain sight. In the city, hidden buildings are often designed to provide the occupants with privacy and protection from the busy world outside or they can be incorporated into the streetscape to free up space for public use. In the countryside, buildings should not spoil a scenic landscape, so they can be designed to become a part of it. Buildings can be buried underground, hidden amongst trees, covered with greenery or even sunk into the sea. They can be clad in mirrors to reflect their surroundings, disappear beneath an urban plaza or be hidden from view on top of another building. Each of these imaginative solutions offers a way for architecture to blend in rather than stand out. ''Hidden architecture'' tells the stories of projects from around the world that are cleverly disguised but still beautifully detailed and outstanding in their execution.

Résumé:
This volume documents and illustrates 60 projects, past and present, that key into a libertarian ethos and desire for diverse self-organised ways of building. They are what this book calls an ‘anarchist’ architecture, that is, forms of design and building that embrace the core values of traditional anarchist political theory since its divergence from the mainstream of socialist politics in the 19th century. These are autonomy, voluntary association, mutual aid, and self-organisation through direct democracy. As the book shows, there are a vast range of architectural projects that can been seen to reflect some or all of these values, whether they are acknowledged as specifically anarchist or otherwise.

For too long a time spatial design has been seen as an action that could be performed by people and for people only. And today, even though some of the most meaningful projects of our times seem to challenge this concept, qualitative researches still struggle to emerge. This is why this book collects, reconstructs, and discusses archetypal models of posthuman architecture, from the cabin of Henry David Thoreau to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. To show how architectural, landscape, and industrial designers, whether professional practitioner or not, have redefined their tools in order to meet the functional and symbolic needs of new and different kinds of subjects.

Résumé:
Though he garnered global praise at the peak of his career from 1960 to 1990, Australian architect John Andrews faced waning fame as postmodern cultural transformations challenged modernist design values, and wider social and economic changes led to a withdrawal of government-funded institutional commissions. Yet his body of work is a remarkable achievement that deserves to be better known. Following a path from Australia to the United States and Canada and back again, ''John Andrews: Architect of uncommon sense'' examines his most important buildings and reveals how the internationalization of architecture during this period was an unexpectedly dispersed geographical phenomenon, following more complex flows and localized progressions than earlier modernist ideas that travelled from center to periphery, metropole to outpost.

Résumé:
As living conditions among the world's poor continue to decline, with more and more people occupying slums and shantytowns, architects and artists are attempting to apply new models of collaboration and sustainability to social crisis. Moderators of Change: Architecture That Helps showcases 20 international projects by architects, designers and artists that provide socially responsible models of urban design. By inviting users to collaborate in the design and building process, and by working with new economic models, these practitioners have realized projects that have had profound, positive effects with just a minimum investment of money and materials. This book includes schools, libraries, gardens, conversions and art projects, as well as essays by Regina Bittner, Carson Chan, Luis Fernandez-Galiano, Ronald Rael, Anne Schmedding and Christian Welzbacher.

13th International Architecture Exhibition: the art of organizing the space we share. The ambition of Common Ground is to reassert the existence of an architectural culture made up not only of singular talents but also of a rich continuity of diverse ideas united in a common history, in common aspirations, in common predicaments and ideals. If architecture is to be more than only the exceptional and privileged moment of our built world, a deeper engagement must then be found between talents and resources. Common Ground invites us to consider how these shared concerns and expectations may be better directed.
