Résumé:
A quintessential feature in Western gardens and landscaping, the lawn is now at the center of a climate change controversy. The large carbon footprint maintenance, its unquenchable thirst for fertilizers, weedkillers, and water, and the notorious unfriendliness towards all forms of wildlife have recently attracted criticism and even spurred an anti-lawn movement. Lawn untangles the colonial-capitalist threads that keep our passion for mown grass alive despite mounting evidence that we'd be better off without it. The lawn is aesthetically and ideologically versatile. From museums and hospitals to corporate headquarters and university campuses, it has become the verdant lingua franca of institutions of all kinds. Its formal homogeneity and neatness imply reliability, constancy, and solicit our trust. But beneath the lawn lies a stratification of intricate ideological and ecological issues that over time have come to define our conception of nature.

Résumé:
In "Plant life", Rosetta S. Elkin explores the procedures of afforestation, the large-scale planting of trees in otherwise treeless environments, including grasslands, prairies, and drylands. Elkin reveals that planting a tree can either be one of the ultimate offerings to thriving on this planet, or one of the most extreme perversions of human agency over it. Using three supracontinental case studies-scientific forestry in the American prairies, colonial control in Africa's Sahelian grasslands, and Chinese efforts to control and administer territory-Elkin explores the political implications of plant life as a tool of environmentalism. By exposing the human tendency to fix or solve environmental matters by exploiting other organisms, this work exposes the relationship between human and plant life, revealing that afforestation is not an ecological act: rather, it is deliberately political and distressingly social.

Résumé:
To confront the Anthropocene, designers must increasingly move between scales and across disciplines to develop new structures of knowledge and tools of representation: from the embodied to the technical, the investigative to the projective. Ultimately, this volume asks: What stakes are embedded in contemporary architectural environmental media, and how are designers re-imagining this media landscape today? Chapters in the book explore counter-cartographies of migration and materials, forest ecologies and theories of abundance, hyperreal visualization and environmental simulation, architecture’s extractive and colonial systems, and pedagogies and practices for environmental futures. This book organizes these efforts into three threads of media practice: rendering visible, rendering sensible, and rendering actionable. While these categories are inextricably intertwined, they represent distinct tactical approaches to media production, each exploring possible methods to develop new knowledge systems, shift aesthetic regimes, and transform collective politics.

Résumé:
Bringing together fifteen scholars of art and culture, ''Unsettling Canadian art history'' addresses the visual and material culture of settler colonialism, enslavement, and racialized diasporas in the contested white settler state of Canada. This collection offers new avenues for scholarship on art, archives, and creative practice by rethinking histories of Canadian colonialisms from Black, Indigenous, racialized, feminist, queer, trans, and Two-Spirit perspectives. Writing across many positionalities, contributors offer chapters that disrupt colonial archives of art and culture, excavating and reconstructing radical Black, Indigenous, and racialized diasporic creation and experience. Exploring the racist frameworks that continue to erase histories of violence and resistance, this book imagines the expansive possibilities of a decolonial future. ''Unsettling Canadian art history'' affirms the importance of collaborative conversations and work in the effort to unsettle scholarship in Canadian art and culture.

Résumé:
From producing sterile goldfish to choreographing the factory assembly line, Revital Cohen and Tuur Van Balen's work could be thought of as situated— that is to say, it is performed within particular networks. These networks— whether connecting raw materials, mythic conditions, animal genetics, constructions of uncertainty, or colonial inheritances— form a point of departure from which to think of friction, entanglement, porousness, reflection, and self-implication. ''Not what I meant but anyway'' reveals the methods and processes behind Cohen and Van Balen’s work and working, prioritizing long and multidimensional research and production over its eventual outcomes. Intermingling conversations between the artists on living and working together, their generated ephemera, and a series of external reflections, the book hints at the intimacies and estrangements inherent to their practice. With contributions from Daisy Hildyard, Andrés Jaque, Lucia Pietroiusti, and Xiaoyu Weng.

This edited collection of essays and image-driven pieces by anthropologists, archaeologists, architects, and historians examines the legacies of African architecture from around the time of independence through examples from different countries. Drawing on ethnography, archival research, and careful observation of buildings, remains, and people, the case studies seek to connect the colonial and postcolonial origins of modernist architecture, the historical processes they underwent, and their present use and habitation, adaptation, and decay. Deriving from a workshop in connection with the 2015 exhibition ''Forms of Freedom'' at the National Museum in Oslo and the Venice Biennale, the volume combines recent developments in architectural history, the anthropology of modernism and of material culture, and contemporary archaeology to move beyond the admiration or preservation of prized architectural ''heritage'' and to complicate the contemplation—or critique—of ''ruins'' and ''ruination.''

Résumé:
Zurich’s Museum Rietberg, one of Europe’s most renowned museums of non-Western art, has undertaken an extensive exhibition project to explore the thoroughly ambivalent history of its own collection. The essays in this illustrated reader published in conjunction with the exhibition investigate the pathways along which objects traveled to the museum. They shed light on how the meaning of these artifacts has shifted in the course of the transfers. And they demonstrate the importance of provenance research for learning comprehensively about and taking a critical approach in the assessment of the complex biographies of artifacts. This publication offers an important contribution to the current debate about the status and impact of non-European art in the global North. It aims to foster awareness of the colonial and postcolonial contexts of trading and collecting such artworks and to help establish new museum narratives.

Résumé:
Photography’s development as a new form of art and technology coincided with profound changes in the way China engaged with the world in the nineteenth century. The medium evolved in response to war, trade, travel, and a desire for knowledge about an unfamiliar place. "Power and perspective" provides a rich account of the exchanges among photographers, artists, patrons, and subjects in the treaty port cities that connected China and the West. Drawing primarily from the Peabody Essex Museum’s historic and largely unpublished collection of photographs, this generously illustrated volume examines the confrontations and collaborations that shaped the adoption and practice of photography in China. Offering an original reassessment of the colonial legacy of the medium, "Power and perspective" addresses photography’s representations of racial hierarchy and its entanglement with histories of European imperialism in nineteenth-century China.

Résumé:
This publication explores the unwritten history of city-building in the Arctic over the last 100 years. Spanning northern regions of North America, through Greenland, Svalbard to Russia, this is the first book to provide a truly circumpolar account of historical and contemporary architecture and urbanism in the Arctic – and it shows how the Arctic city offers valuable lessons for the post-colonial study of architectural and urban planning history elsewhere. Examining architects' and planners' designs for Arctic urban futures, it considers the impact of 20th-century models of urban design and planning in Arctic cities, and reveals how contemporary architectural approaches continue to this day to essentialize 'extreme' climate conditions and disregard the agency of Arctic city-dwellers – a critical perspective that is vital to the formulation of future design and planning practices in the region.
