Résumé:
Observatorium is a unique consortium of three artists that has developed a philosophy and a working procedure that aims to make the grey areas and interfaces of architecture, urban design, landscape architecture and art more productive. Instead of creating autonomous art in public space, the group uses the media of sculpture and installation to make functional facilities that are monumental, symbolic and meaningful. This publication is at once an overview and an outcome of their design philosophy, and is accompanied by photographs, drawings and narratives, along with a complete list of their works produced to date.

Résumé:
In recent decades, citizens active in urban governance have taken up their roles as autonomous subjects, negotiating with governmental actors on the reuse of vacant buildings while representing the wishes of fellow residents to create self-managed communal spaces that are open to neighbourhood residents. They have appropriated vacant properties — and, where possible, constructed new buildings — in line with their own interests, those of civic groups, and the common good. They work to create affordable working, living, cultural and community places in an increasingly commercialised urban environment. In this publication, these civic actors are referred to as citizen professionals (CPs).

Résumé:
Hashima is a small island located off the extreme southwest coast of Japan, about ten miles from Nagasaki. Its darkwarship-like silhouette earned it the nickname of Gunkanjima (“battleship island”). During the wave of industrialisation in the nineteenth century, a coal seam was discovered on the island and the Mitsubishi corporation opened a mine there. Workers settled on the island and the population increased, the small mining town quickly becoming a modern and autonomous settlement. However, the mine closed in January 1974 and the last inhabitants deserted the island. Since then, Gunkanjima has become a ghost town.

Résumé:
Situated in Central Asia, Xinjiang is an autonomous region of the People’s Republic of China traditionally inhabited primarily by Uyghurs, in addition to significant populations of Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Mongolian and other minorities. Patrick Wack traversed this massive territory, three times the size of France, with camera in hand to gain a sense of its history, people, and current state of unrest due to China’s crackdown on its Muslim population. Islamophobia in China has flared in recent years due to reports of radicalised Uyghur volunteers fighting for ISIS in Syria and elsewhere. Wack counters this with a riveting account of his experiences in a place where the dust is omnipresent.

Résumé:
Climate-friendly construction is essential if we are to ensure that future generations can enjoy comfortable living spaces. Design and the choice of materials help to considerably reduce the climate impact of buildings. The techniques featured in this book come from all five climatic zones and many are drawn from non-European and bygone societies. The low-tech approaches, illustrated in schematic drawings and explained in texts, are a source of inspiration for the design of sustainable and energy-autonomous building structures. "Architecture follows climate" provides the first in-depth and comprehensive overview of passive building techniques that have been tried and tested for centuries.

Résumé:
In this book Pallasmaa progresses his case for a multi–sensory approach to architecture, espoused in The Eyes of the Skin, by taking a wider view of the role of embodiment in human existential reactions, experiences and expressions as well as the processes of making and thinking. ‘The Thinking Hand’ is a metaphor for the characteristic independence and autonomous activity of all our senses as they constantly scan the physical world. Prevailing educational philosophies continue to emphasise conceptual, intellectual and verbal knowledge over this tacit and non–conceptual wisdom of our embodied processes, which is so essential to our experience and understanding of the physical and the built.

Résumé:
TURBA is the first journal for the study, theory, and praxis of curatorial strategies in the live arts. The live arts are broadly defined as those arts in which contingent, momentary acts and events, performed by human or other autonomous agents, are crucial to the aesthetic perception and the emergence of meaning in ephemeral time-based work. They include, but are not limited to, dance, music, sound art, theatre, performance art, verbal arts, circus arts, live media arts and inter-arts performance works. With this journal, we aim to create a platform for the exploration of ideas, concepts, constraints, expectations, and contingencies which guide and drive curatorial practices in these fields.

Résumé:
People want a better quality of life now, genuine environmental responsibility, and local control over their own futures. "The urban village" is a seminal intellectual and practical contribution to the construction of such possibilities. It introduces new ideas, like territorial patrimony, and sustainable, local-level autonomous development, describing both the methodological aspects and the visionary, alternative communities which could become possible. Professor Magnaghi sees these as being profoundly democratic, environmentally sustainable, and embodying sufficient local economic strength to resist globalization. Another potential gain would be an increase in social well-being as measured by the quality of life, solidarity, and the development of non-commercial caring relations.

Résumé:
Architects draw buildings, and the buildings they draw are usually populated by representations of the human figure — drawn, copied, collaged, or inserted — most often to suggest scale. It is impossible to represent architecture without representing the human form. This book collects more than 1,000 scale figures by 250 architects but presents them in a completely unexpected way: it removes them from their architectural context, displaying them on the page, buildingless, giving them lives of their own. They are presented not thematically or chronologically but encyclopedically, alphabetically by architect (Aalto to Zumthor). In serendipitous juxtapositions, the autonomous human figures appear and reappear, displaying endless variations of architecturally rendered human forms.
