Résumé:
Since Greek antiquity the human body has been regarded as a microcosm of universal harmony. In this book an international group of architects, architectural historians, and theorists examines the relation of the human body and architecture. The essays view well-known buildings, texts, paintings, ornaments, and landscapes from the perspective of the body’s physical, psychological, and spiritual needs and pleasures. Topics include Greek temples; the churches of Tadao Ando in Japan; Renaissance fortresses and paintings; the body, space, and dwelling in Wright’s and Schindler’s houses in North America; the corporeal dimension of Carlo Scarpa’s landscapes and gardens; theory from Vitruvius to the Renaissance and Enlightenment; and Freudian psychoanalysis. The essays are framed by an appreciation of architectural historian and theorist Joseph Rykwert’s influential work on the subject. Written for a symposium in honour of Joseph Rykwert held in March 1996 at the University of Pennsylvania.

Résumé:
Skyscrapers have been piercing the clouds since the end of the nineteenth century but today's soaring land prices are driving developers to build bigger, better and higher while aiming for as small a footprint as possible. This book features spreads with a large photograph with cross-section drawings plus fact boxes listing location, year of completion, height, stories, primary functions, owner/developer, architect, structural engineer, and construction firm. Concise text describes historical context; unusual or innovative construction; engineering and structural systems; foundation, facade, and shape; the site history; and building usage; as well as any special features that make the skyscraper unique. The 46 skyscrapers in "How to Build a Skyscraper" appear not for their height but for their pioneering technology, sustainability, and other characteristics that set them apart. They are distributed over the world's most developed regions of North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Résumé:
Within the large number of places that comprise the fabric of today’s contemporary urban landscape, public interior venues are taking on an ever growing significance in the face of exterior spaces. Whether in terms of climate, security, leisure or well-being, interiors have naturally incorporated themselves into the daily urban itinerary as part of public activity. The intense social interaction that takes place within these public spaces is concentrated within bars and restaurants, home to flirtations and friendships, entertainment and relaxation, observers and the observed. “Ultimate Restaurant Design” presents over seventy contemporary venues that have been chosen for their innovative interior architecture. Taking in venues from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, the projects are accompanied by full colour photography, detailed plans and insightful descriptions, making this a truly comprehensive survey of some of the most striking restaurant and bar interiors in the world today.

Résumé:
Taking a critical look at how new urbanism has lived up to its ideals, the author asks whether new urban approaches offer a viable path to creating good communities. With examples drawn principally from North America, Europe and Japan, "Planning the good community" explores new urban approaches in a wide range of settings. It compares the movement for urban renaissance in Europe with the New Urbanism of the United States and Canada, and asks whether the concerns that drive today’s planning theory – issues like power, democracy, spatial patterns and globalisation - receive adequate attention in new urban approaches. The issue of aesthetics is also raised, as the author questions whether communities must be more than just attractive in order to be good. With the benefit of twenty years’ hindsight and a world-wide perspective, this book offers the reader unparalleled insight as well as a rigorous and considered critical analysis.

Résumé:
Canada's foremost architectural office Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects, founded in 1987 in Toronto, is one of most innovative architectural offices in North America today. They have made a name for themselves both for their integrated design process embodying collaboration with experts, clients and future users as well as the diversity of aesthetically refined and finely detailed designs. The work ranges from cultural institutions such as the Toronto International Film Festival and Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis to ecologically innovative concepts such as Manitoba Hydro Place in Winnipeg. A respectful approach toward the integration of heritage buildings is also a characteristic feature, illustrated by the designs for the Royal Conservatory and the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. Finally, educational and research facilities are a strong focus in KPMB's work, exemplified by campus projects in in Waterloo, Toronto, and Montréal, as well as future projects for the MIT and Princeton.

Résumé:
In a time when an estimated 1.2 billion people across the world lack access to secure housing, how are cities working to empower and promote the inclusion of all, irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity, disability and economic status? How is affordable housing bridging economic gaps across different social, political and cultural geographies, particularly for the 900 million individuals who live in slums? This volume explores the interface of social justice and city making through comparative discussions from Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe, as well as North, Central and South America. The thirty-six essays in this collection include conversations with influential administrators and civic leaders such as Somsook Boonyabancha and Jaime Lerner, with commentaries on transformative initiatives such as “Child Friendly Cities,” and “Women for the World,” and case studies of exemplary projects by globally known architects and planners such as Alejandro Aravena and MVRDV.

Résumé:
Timber is a vital resource that is all around us. It is the house that shelters us, the furniture we relax in, the books we read, the paper we print, the disposable diapers for our babies, and the boxes that contain our cereal, detergent, and new appliances. The way we produce and consume timber, however, is changing. With international timber companies and big box discount retailers increasingly controlling through global commodity chains where and how much timber is traded, the world's remaining old-growth forests, particularly in the developing world, are under threat of disappearing - all for the price of a consumer bargain. This trailblazing book is the first to expose what's happening inside corporate commodity chains with conclusions that fundamentally challenge our understanding of how and why deforestation persists. Authors Peter Dauvergne and Jane Lister reveal how timber now moves through long and complex supply chains from the forests of the global South through the factories of emerging economies like China to the big box retail shelves of Europe and North America. Well-off consumers are getting unprecedented deals. But the social and environmental costs are extraordinarily high as corporations mine the world's poorest regions and most vulnerable ecosystems. The growing power of big retail within these commodity chains is further increasing South-North inequities and unsustainable global consumption. Yet, as this book's highly original analysis uncovers, it is also creating some intriguing opportunities to promote more responsible business practices and better global forest governance.

Résumé:
For some of us, the family is a source of love and support. But for many others, the family is a place of private horror, coercion, and personal domination. In a capitalist society, the private family carries the impossible demands of interpersonal care and social reproductive labor. Can we imagine a different future? In ''Family abolition'', author M.E. O'Brien uncovers the history of struggles to create radical alternatives to the private family. O'Brien traces the changing family politics of racial capitalism in the industrial cities of Europe and the slave plantations and settler frontier of North America, explaining the rise and fall of the housewife-based family form. From early Marxists to Black and queer insurrectionists to today's mass protest movements, O'Brien finds revolutionaries seeking better ways of loving, caring, and living. ''Family abolition'' takes us through the past and present of family politics into a speculative future of the commune, imagining how care could be organized in a free society.

Résumé:
During the last decade, research on global cities has exploded throughout the social sciences. It has now become one of the most exciting, if controversial approaches to the study of urban life today. Fifty generous selections, including contributions from John Friedmann, Michael Peter Smith, Saskia Sassen, Peter Taylor, Manuel Castells, and Anthony King, explore the interrelationships between cities and globalization. The seven sections with accompanying editorial introductions guide the student through the key theoretical, methodological, and empirical debates. "The global cities reader" explores the major foundations and intellectual influences of research on globalized urbanization. Classic and contemporary case studies of globalizing cities from Europe, North America and East Asia as well as from emerging world city regions of the global South are presented. The political and cultural dimensions of global city formation are examined in separate sections. The reader concludes by examining the refinement and critique of global cities research in the last fifteen years.
