Résumé:
The white cubical house, the vernacular architecture in the Aegean Archipelago, knows no author. Its capacity to resist harsh climatic and topographic circumstances has been improved and adjusted through time and seems today close to perfection. The white-washed Cycladic House has become iconic to the image of Greece through the construction of national and tourism narratives. What happens when an architect steps into this process of anonymous transmission of skills? In 1966 music composer, architect, and engineer Iannis Xenakis articulated a response to this tradition and designed, from his base in Paris, a holiday house on the island of Amorgos while choosing to remain absent throughout the construction process.

Résumé:
A really neat book on mobile, portable, and deployable architecture. With a brief look back at mobile structures of old—the first being Noah’s Ark—Jennifer Siegel of Mobile Design in LA, brings together the works of a variety of artists and architects who design and construct portable, demountable, and mobile structures. This book includes work by Office of Mobile Design, LOT/EK, Vito Acconci, Doug Jackson/LARGE, Mark Fisher, Michael Fox, FTL Happold, Axel Thallemer, and Lawrence Scarpa. In beautiful color images, detailed drawings, and thoughtful text, the contributors reveal their working methods. Projects include: a portable island; a conventional car that is turned into a mobile hotel that can be delivered wherever it is needed; a microenvironment of a house that attaches to your body; an entiroe mobile community whose living units plug into a framwork of flexible communal space; Pink Floyd’s The Wall stage set and lots more. The book is introduced by Andrei Codrescu, well-known NPR commentator and author.

Résumé:
This issue features DnA, the Beijing-based firm led by architect Xu Tiantian. Since 2004, DnA has been designing public buildings that bridge culture, industry, and infrastructure in rural China. Prior to launching her own office, Xu worked for several design firms in the United States and the Netherlands, including OMA. The magazine features 25 works by DnA, organised into four clusters located near China’s south-eastern coast: repurposing abandoned quarries in Jinyun County, revitalising Fujian ‘tulou’ (rural dwellings unique to the Hakka Chinese subgroup), public facilities in Songyang County, and the creation of a cultural museum to showcase local traditions on Meizhou Island.

The Greek island sequence montaged by László Moholy-Nagy into his legendary documentary Architects' Congress can be interpreted, like his provocative Photoplastiks, as a "message in a bottle" thrown into the sea that "might take decades for someone to find and read." Résumé:
The Greek island sequence montaged by László Moholy-Nagy into his legendary documentary Architects' Congress can be interpreted, like his provocative Photoplastiks, as a "message in a bottle" thrown into the sea that "might take decades for someone to find and read." Capturing the incomparable Greek light, it presents a compelling glimpse of the four days and nights in August 1933 when the elite of the European architectural and artistic avant-garde—in Greece for the 4th International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM)—took to the Aegean in a barely seaworthy "nut shell" that would bring them close to the brink of disaster. The "motley crew" included Le Corbusier, Fernand Léger, Amédée Ozenfant, Sigfried Giedion, Cor van Eesteren and Otto Neurath. Crucial to the success of the surreal odyssey were various members of the Greek avant-garde.
