Résumé:
The issue of race in architecture is a com-plicated and often divisive one. Traditional methods of architectural history and theory tend to attribute a city's civic and cultural identity to the dominant culture. Ignored are more marginal cultures without a tradition of public building, often preventing a complete understanding of the city and the forces that shape it. These essays explore the historic and contemporary effects of race upon the development of the built environment, and examine the myths and realities of America's racial landscapes. Its multidisciplinary approach identifies and interprets the black cultural landscape, examining its visual, spatial, and ideological dimensions. Contributors to this collection include Nathaniel Belcher, Felicia Davis, Sheryl Tucker deVasquez, K. Ian Grandison, Bradford Grant, Walter Hood, Lesley Lokko, Mabel O. Wilson, and Amy Weisser.

Résumé:
This book brings together a provocative series of essays, conversations, and design proposals that attempt to intensify the potential of the multidisciplinary discourse developing in response to the Anthropocene thesis for contemporary architecture scholarship and practice. Research regarding the significance and consequence of anthropogenic transformations of the earth's land, oceans, biosphere and climate have demonstrated that, from a wide variety of perspectives, it is almost certain that humans have initiated a new geological epoch, their own. First labeled the Anthropocene by the chemist Paul Crutzen, the consideration of the merits of the Anthropocene thesis by the International Commission on Stratigraphy and the International Union of Geological Sciences has also garnered the attention of philosophers, historians, and legal scholars, as well as an increasing number of researchers from a range of scientific backgrounds.

Résumé:
The Other Architect presents 23 case studies that emphasize the potential for architecture to identify the urgent issues of our time. These international and often multidisciplinary groups, with examples from the 1960s to today, invented and adopted new methods outside of traditional design practices in order to create architecture without building. The alternative approaches shown in the exhibition challenge the concept of individual authorship in favor of establishing collaborative networks or partnerships with permeable roles. Their work took on non-traditional forms such as bibliographies, surveys, databases, conferences, posters, questionnaires and manifestos. By avoiding the built form, these unexpected ways of practicing allow architecture to actively shape a cultural agenda. 416 pages and over 300 colour facsimiles of traces left in letters, books, drawings, photographs, budgets, videos, mission statements, meeting minutes, T-shirts, boats, and buses

Résumé:
In a world propelled by swift technological progress and perpetual obsolescence, women frequently find themselves adapting and altering their daily experiences in order to remain functional. In the 21st century, as technology purports to comprehensively assess and address women’s conditions and physical discomfort, ''Cycles, the Sacred and the Doomed'' delves deeply into the realm of female health technologies, revealing a space where science, holistic methods and mythology converge. This book challenges the idea of combining ancient wisdom with modern innovation and takes readers on a multidisciplinary journey to explore the intricacies of women’s health. What roles can digital tools and devices play in promoting female health? How can the use of digital tools and devices be beneficial for the promotion of female well-being? How might digital tools and devices be used to support and improve these systems?

Résumé:
Gorgeously quiet in color and composition, Agnes Martin's paintings have a distinctive grace that sets them apart from those of the Abstract Expressionists of her day and the Minimalist artists she inspired. Martin attributed her grid-based works to metaphysical motivations, lending a serene complexity to her oeuvre that has defied any easy categorization. Perhaps for this reason, critical and scholarly analysis of her paintings has been scarce--until now. This important new anthology brings together the most current scholarship on Martin's paintings by twelve multidisciplinary essayists who consider various aspects of the artist's four-decade career. Organized by Dia Art Foundation, whose extensive holdings of Martin's paintings and ambitions to support in-depth research on the works are unparalleled, the publication brings renewed focus and energy to Martin's career and her contributions to the art historical narrative

Résumé:
This lively and richly illustrated book investigates the influence of oriental trade and travel on medieval Venice and its architecture. Architectural historian Deborah Howard examines the experiences of Venetian merchants overseas, focusing on links with Egypt, Syria, and Palestine, as well as with Persia and the Silk Route. She argues that many Venetians gained insight into Islamic culture through personal contacts with their Muslim trading partners. Based on wide-ranging multidisciplinary research, this book examines the mechanisms that governed the exchange of visual culture across ideological boundaries before the age of printing. Howard explores a range of building types that reflect the impact of Islamic imagery, paying special attention to two icon buildings, San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale. She considers the complexities of importing Muslim ideas to an unambiguously Christian city, itself the point of embarkation for pilgrims to the Holy Land.

Résumé:
Conflicts around urban development and planning issues are an important dimension of contemporary urban politics. Issues of social cohesion and democratic representation become all the more relevant as cities face economic crisis and when local politics tries to meet its challenges with "post-political" responses. The case studies in Conflict in the City, drawn from cities around the world, explore the potential of local planning conflicts to challenge the rhetoric of urban democracy. These conflicts expose some of the key political issues in the contemporary city: the multi-scalar nature of urban policies, the tension between "policing" and "politics," the spatial dimension of protest and social mobilization and the struggle for new forms of citizenship. Conflict in the City attempts to rethink urban development and planning conflicts through a multidisciplinary perspective, and explore how these "local" conflicts can spur broader political mobilizations.

Résumé:
The Limestone Barrens Project is an international multidisciplinary investigation of the limestone cliffs and alvars in three areas: Ontario's Bruce Peninsula, Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula and the Burren in County Clare Ireland. Artists working in lens-based media (photography, video, video projection and video installation), writers, a composer and researchers walked and documented the sites so as to explore links between science, visual art, creative writing, sound and music. The project's publication is a stunning tribute to the fragile nature of these sites and their importance to our environment. Three essays, artist statements, poetry and sound recordings are accompanied by magnificent illustrations by some of the world's most distinguished landscape photographers, notably Marlene Creates, Har-Prakash Khalsa and Greg Staats. Accompanied by an audio CD. Produced in collaboration with Sir Wilfred Grenville College of Art Gallery, Newfoundland and Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Ireland.

Résumé:
De Zwarte Hond was founded 40 years ago in Groningen and has evolved from an established architectural practice into a multidisciplinary studio with more than 120 people. With offices in the Netherlands and Germany, the firm combines social commitment with high-quality architectural and urban design projects. Going beyond mere architecture and urbanism by taking responsibility for the quality of the built environment in a wider sense, the office considers itself more a movement rather than a traditional design office. Optimistic Activism is presented across two exhibition spaces: the HOW illustrates the collaborative way of working, where generosity shapes both the spatial and social approach. The WHAT showcases twelve projects through models, drawings and photographs, demonstrating how social engagement, design expertise and craftsmanship translate into built reality. Through their methods and projects, De Zwarte Hond generates optimistic impulses, creating places that bring people together and enrich community life.
