Résumé:
A 1988 UN Habitat seminar considered issues of housing construction in "developing countries." Included in the presentation was a prefabricated building system designed by East German architects, which was used in an education and development center operated by the African National Congress in Tanzania. In this publication, a multidisciplinary and international group of artists, curators, historians and researchers reflect on the education and development centers as radical experiments in learning and living, as well as their spatial and design implementation in the context of the efforts to create a future democratic South Africa free of racism. This book focuses on why education was seen as the key to building a new democratic society. What were the immediate educational needs in those temporary learning environments? How were the educational priorities implemented spatially and creatively? And what was everyday life like for the people who lived there?

Résumé:
The unresolved limits of the post-capitalist city give rise to interventions in the city and the contemporary landscape in which the planner has to rely on a knowledge of other fields. The inevitable multidisciplinary activity at these frontiers has been an object of study during recent decades. This book brings together these reflections and some of their achievements in projects whose common denominator is their condition of marginality, of contiguity with prior structures with which they try to establish connections and continuities. The four parts into which the book is divided make reference to projectural policies conditioned by work on the boundaries of the pre-existing and to the interpretation of their settings: stretches of water, infrastructures, cultural and artificial natures. Analysed here are border zones, edges, frontiers and fringes of the contemporary city with itself, with nature, and with the boundaries between the natural and the colonised landscape.

Résumé:
''For Want of a Nail'' takes as its starting point a series of curious memoranda sent from J. Robert Oppenheimer's office in October 1943 and archived in the Los Alamos Historical Museum, in which the eminent scientist repeatedly requests a nail in the wall upon which he could hang his hat. The persistence and specificity of the request for this nail inspired the international art collective Futurefarmers to create, by hand (and after more than a half-century delay), three nails for the theoretical physicist: one forged from a meteorite, one cast using 1943 steel pennies, and a third made by re-fusing Trinitite, a material formed by residue from the Trinity nuclear bomb test. Throughout this multidisciplinary project, Futurefarmers constructs a narrative that runs parallel, and in some cases counter to, the conventional accounts of the Manhattan Project and Oppenheimer, its chief architect.

Résumé:
Tibor Kalman, probably best known for the witty designs of his company M and his provocative work for Benetton's Colors magazine, defines the eclectic multidisciplinary approach that has come to characterize graphic design in the past decade. Tibor, designed by Michael Bierut of Pentagram and edited by I.D. Magazine senior writer Peter Hall, is the first comprehensive collection of Kalman's work and ideas. This full-color title--numbering over 400 pages--includes a pictorial manifesto by Kalman, revealing his thoughts on magazines, advertising, sex, bookstores, food, and the design profession. Product designs, stills and storyboards from his film and video projects, and spreads from his book and magazine work are included, creating what Kalman calls "an almanac of oddities." An impressive list of essay contributors includes Steven Heller, David Byrne, Jay Chiat, Kurt Andersen, Paola Antonelli, Isaac Mizrahi, Ingrid Sischy, Chee Pearlman, and Rick Poynor.

Résumé:
Never before has the everyday soundtrack of urban space been so cacophonous. Since the 1970s, sound researchers have attempted to classify noise, music, and everyday sounds using concepts such as Pierre Shafer's sound object and R. Murray Schafer's soundscape. Recently, the most significant team of soundscape researchers in the world has been concerned with the effects of sounds on listeners. In a multidisciplinary work spanning musicology, electro-acoustic composition, architecture, urban studies, communication, phenomenology, social theory, physics, and psychology, Jean-François Augoyard, Henry Torgue, and their associates at the Centre for Research on Sonic Space and the Urban Environment (CRESSON) in Grenoble, France, provide an alphabetical sourcebook of eighty sonic/auditory effects. Their accounts of sonic effects such as echo, anticipation, vibrato, and wha-wha integrate information about the objective physical spaces in which sounds occur with cultural contexts and individual auditory experience. "Sonic experience" attempts to rehabilitate general acoustic awareness, combining accessible definitions and literary examples with more in-depth technical information for specialists.

Résumé:
Robert Earl Paige is one of the most iconic artists and designers from Chicago’s South Side. A multidisciplinary artist and arts educator, he works across textile design, painting, collage, and sculpture. During the 1970s, he brought West African–inspired patterns to U.S. shoppers through the Dakkabar fabrics collection available at Sears, Roebuck, leading to the inclusion of Black culture in home design. In addition to exploring Paige’s personal and artistic practice, through essays by Dr. Romi Crawford and Dr. Gervais Marsh, ''The United Colors of Robert Earl Paige'' contextualizes his work in relation to social and artistic movements, from the minimalism and abstraction of the 1960s and 1970s to AfriCOBRA and the Black Arts Movement in Chicago and across the United States. Published in conjunction with Paige’s exhibition at Hyde Park Art Center in 2024, this fully illustrated book includes reproductions of the artist’s handpainted scarves, collages, and rugs made during the past sixty years, along with new ceramic tiles, collages, and textiles.

Résumé:
At 95 years of age, Françoise Sullivan still works in her studio most every day. From her participation in the 1948 publication Refus Global - a radical statement by Quebec avant garde artists of the time - she has broken through boundaries as both an artist and a woman and her creations throughout the decades include paintings, sculptures, photographs, performance and dance. This retrospective monograph highlights the key role she has played in the history of modern and contemporary art in Canada. In addition to presenting the artist's diverse and multidisciplinary practice, the authors offer an in-depth exploration of some of the milestones in her career. The various styles and approaches adopted by Sullivan over the years are contextualized with the help of a large number of archival documents, both personal and professional. As a whole, the publication provides a fascinating portrait of a singular artist's trajectory through several decades of the changing nature of art.

Résumé:
A concise introduction to the pioneering formal and social innovations of the Neoconcretist and Tropicália protagonist. Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica’s oeuvre remains an indisputable influence on all aspects of avant-garde culture in his home country and abroad, from visual art to music, theater, literature and beyond. This volume demonstrates the numerous ways in which Oiticica’s work explored and expanded formal artistic modes, pushing past the boundaries of color and structure. Oiticica prioritized the inclusive and participatory possibilities of art, represented through his forays into environmental art and interactive installation. Large-scale projects such as his monumental installation Tropicália (1966–67), which satirizes the idea of Brazil as a tropical paradise, are documented alongside his works on paper and textile pieces. The text traces the evolution of Oiticica’s multidisciplinary practice and underlines the cosmological ideas that guided his approach to art and life, demonstrating the profound impact Oiticica's ideas had on the wider art world, both past and present.

Résumé:
This publication documents an unusual project by a multidisciplinary group of architects based at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London and collectively known as sixteen*(makers). Composed of some of the most innovative architects in Europe, the group focuses on interactive 'intelligent' systems employing digital fabrication, robotics, and distributed networks of sensors and microprocessors. The project 55/02 is a form of forest shelter that engages with the landscape and is designed to address the visitor towards the particular qualities of its unique placement. It is at once a shelter, a sculpture, a vantage point, and a geographical marker. Essays by the project's authors describe the creation/building process and speculate on the work and its significance. The project's name comes from its coordinates, (55° 11.30 N, 02° 29.23 W, '55/02'), in Northumbria, England. In 2011 the building was awarded a prize by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
