Résumé:
Written from a neo-marxist point of view by a proeminent Italian architectural historian, "Architecture and utopia" leads the reader beyond architectural form into a broader understanding of a relation of architecture to society and architects to the workforce and the marketplace. It discuses the garden cities movement and the sub-urban development it generated, the German-Russian architectural experiments of the 1920s, the place of the avant-garde in the plastic arts, the uses and pitfalls of semiological approaches to architecture, and assesses, the prospects of socialist alternatives.

Résumé:
One of the most profound thinkers of the modern age, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900) has been the subject of volumes of literature that document his life and work. Until now there has been no in-depth study devoted to Nietzsche's thoughts and impact on architecture, specifically his far-reaching notion of an architecture commensurate with the modern mind. In the essays that comprise this book, thirteen contributors from a wide variety of disciplines (including art history, architecture and architectural theory, literature, philosophy, and city planning) assess the relationship of Nietzschean philosophy to art and architecture, elucidate frequent misunderstandings, and determine patterns of influence. The book is divided into three parts: "The Metaphors of Architecture," "Between Art, Literature, and Architecture," and "Nietzsche and the Architects." Contributors include Paolo Baldacci, the Giorgio and Isa de Chirico Foundation, Rome; Hanne Bergius, Hochschule fur Kunst und Design Burg Giebichenstein, Halle, Germany; Rolf Bothe, Kunstsammlungen zu Weimar, Germany; Claudia Brodsky Lacour, Princeton University; Tilmann Buddensieg, Humbolt-Universität Berlin; Jean-Louis Cohen, Université de Paris and Institute of Fine Arts, New York University; Karsten Harries, Yale University; Werner Hofmann, Germany; Fritz Neumeyer, Technische Universität Berlin; Léon Ploegaerts, University of Ottawa, Canada; and Anthony Vidler, University of California at Los Angeles. Edited by Alexandre Kostka and Irving Wohlfarth.

Résumé:
This invaluable reader brings together for the first time the core writings on architecture by key philosophers and cultural theorists of the twentieth century. Issues around the built environment are increasingly central to the study of the social sciences and humanities. The essays offer a refreshing take on the question of architecture and provocatively rethink many of the accepted tenets of architectural theory from a broader cultural perspective. The book represents a careful selection of the very best theoretical writings on the ideas which have shaped our cities and our experiences of architecture.

Résumé:
Le Corbusier famously said, ''A house is a machine for living in.'' We now confront the litany of environmental challenges associated with the legacy of the architectural machine: a changing climate, massive species die-off, diminished air and water quality, and resource scarcities. Brook Muller offers an alternative: water-centric urban design that fosters sustainability, equity, and architectural creativity. Inspired by the vernacular, such as the levadas of Madeira Island and both the arid and drenched places of the American West, Muller articulates a ''hydro-logical'' philosophy in which architects and planners begin by conceptualizing interactions between existing waterways and the spaces they intend to develop. From these interactions—and the new technologies and approaches enabling them—aesthetic, spatial, and experiential opportunities follow. Not content merely to work around sensitive ecology, Muller argues for genuinely climate-adapted urban landscapes in which buildings act as ecological infrastructure that actually improve watersheds while delivering functionality and beauty for diverse communities. Rich in images and practical examples, ''Blue architecture'' will change the way we think about our designed world.

Résumé:
In the years of reconstruction and economic boom that followed the Second World War, the domestic sphere encountered new expectations regarding social behaviour, modes of living, and forms of dwelling. This book brings together an international group of scholars from architecture, design, urban planning, and interior design to reappraise mid-twentieth century modern life, offering a timely reassessment of culture and the economic and political effects on civilian life. This collection contains essays that examine the material of art, objects, and spaces in the context of practices of dwelling over the long span of the postwar period. It asks what role material objects, interior spaces, and architecture played in quelling or fanning the anxieties of modernism’s ordinary denizens, and how this role informs their legacy today.

This book explores what it means for development activists to practise architecture on a global scale, and provides a blueprint for developing architectural practices based on reciprocal working methods. The content is based on real situations - through extended field research and contacts with architecture schools and architects, as well as participating NGOs. It demonstrates that the ability to produce appropriate and sustainable design is increasingly relevant, whether in the field of disaster relief, longer-term development or wider urban contexts, both in rich countries and poor countries.

Résumé:
Buildings tell stories. Castles, country homes, churches, and monasteries are "documents" of the people who built them, owned them, lived and died in them, inherited and saved or destroyed them, and recorded their histories. Literature and Architecture in Early Modern England examines the relationship between sixteenth and seventeenth-century architectural and literary works. By becoming more sensitive to the narrative functions of architecture, Anne M. Myers argues, we begin to understand how a range of writers viewed and made use of the material built environment that surrounded the production of early modern texts in England. Scholars have long found themselves in the position of excusing or explaining England's failure to achieve the equivalent of the Italian Renaissance in the visual arts. Myers proposes that architecture inspired an unusual amount of historiographic and literary production, including poetry, drama, architectural treatises, and diaries. Works by William Camden, Henry Wotton, Ben Jonson, Andrew Marvell, George Herbert, Anne Clifford, and John Evelyn, when considered as a group, are texts that overturn the engrained critical notion that a Protestant fear of idolatry sentenced the visual arts and architecture in England to a state of suspicion and neglect.
