Description:
This project series document the exterior restauration work of Toronto Union Station in Toronto from 1984-1985. The office identified the project number as 8405. This project consisted of restoration to the exterior of the train station commissioned by VIA Rail Canada Inc. This work was referred to as a clean up in the project documentation. Restauration work was done to the existing exterior stonework, colannades, screens and skylights. This project was referred to as Package A in the materials, with Package B representing a project for interior work (see project series AP018.S1.1984.PR01 in this fonds). This project is recorded through drawings, photographs and textual records dating from 1984-1985. The drawings are of earlier plans for the station, prepared by architects Ross & Macdonald and some by Public Works Canada. The textual records include correspondence, conference and site reports, contract data, construction documentation, financial records, interoffice letters.

Along with his firm, John C. Parkin began the design and construction of the Etobicoke General Hospital in 1966. Following this date, he completed numerous additional projects for the site. This project documents the development of the land around the hospital following its construction. Work included excavations, paving, landscaping, and parking studies, among others. The project is recorded through drawings and textual records dating from 1975-1978. The majority of drawings are reprographic copies of site plans. Textual records include tender documents, supplementary instructions, correspondence, meeting minutes and reports, inspection reports, change orders, certificates of payment, interoffice letters, and consultancy records. File AP018.S1.1975.PR05.005 includes an index to the textual records, which was created by the office.

The series documents Arthur Erickson's extensive travels, his relationships with close friends and family as well as his activities and interests outside of his architectural practice. Correspondence includes letters, postcards, and greeting cards from Erickson's family, close friends and acquaintances. Travel photographs and sound recordings reflect Erickson's world travels and interest in global architectural trends. Among these are photographs of Pierre Elliot and Margaret Trudeau and long-term partner Francisco Kripacz, Erickson's frequent travel companion. This series also contains newspaper clippings and other reference material (visual and textual) that Erickson collected for personal interest, photographs, drawings, as well as his personal sketches and early artwork. This project series documents renovations and an addition to the Safeco Insurance Company of America office building in Mississauga, Ontario from 1977-1980. The office identified the project number as 7702. Beginning in 1973, Parkin Architects Planners began work on the construction of the Safeco office building. This project consisted of renovations to the original building and an addition, which was one-storey and approximately 30,400 square feet in size. Safeco was to occupy about 1/3 of the new space, while the rest would be rented to tenants. The project is recorded through drawings, photographic materials and textual records dating from 1975-1986. Photographic materials include slides, negatives and photos of the site, construction progress, construction issues and the finished building. This project consisted of a three-storey building with a basement and penthouse, located at 10th Avenue and 15th Street. The building was designed to house the computer equipment of Novalta Properties Ltd., their corporate records, and support staff. The building was separated in two by function with a central atrium in the center. Overall, the project had 131,000 square feet of developable area. The project is recorded through drawings, material samples, and textual records dating from 1981-1984. The drawings include plans, details, elevations and sections. These drawings are marked The Chandler Kennedy Architectural Group, who were the consulting architects on the project. The textual records consist of correspondence, conference and inspection reports, tender documents, cost control and building statistics records, interior design and contractor documentation, certificates of payment, supplementary instructions, change orders, interoffice letters, and specifications.
