In "Tower and office", Spanish architects Inaki Abalos and Juan Herreros look at the role and impact of advanced building technologies in American architecture since World War II. The war, they claim, marked the end of the first cycle of modernism, challenging the belief that technological progress alone could produce a perpetually better future. At the same time, the war was the source of powerful new structural models and construction methods. The authors examine the ways these technologies have been inflected over the last half century by more subjective and integrated processes of spatial organization.

Résumé:
In "Tower and Office", Spanish architects Inaki Abalos and Juan Herreros look at the role and impact of advanced building technologies in American architecture since World War II. The war, they claim, marked the end of the first cycle of modernism, challenging the belief that technological progress alone could produce a perpetually better future. At the same time, the war was the source of powerful new structural models and construction methods. The authors examine the ways these technologies have been inflected over the last half century by more subjective and integrated processes of spatial organization. In the first part of the book, Abalos and Herreros focus on the work of Le Corbusier, revealing the degree of complexity achieved in his interpretation of the modern skyscraper. In the second part, they look at the intersection of technical and cultural determinants in the design of high-rise structures since World War II. Among the issues they consider are the evolution of the load-bearing frame, the impact of high-tech systems on tall buildings, and the transparent building skin. In the third part, they address developments in office design and planning, tracing an evolution from the repetitive and homogeneous office skyscraper to the present-day mixed-use structure. Overall they demonstrate how the objective technical analysis associated with modernist architectural theory has given way in recent building practice to a variety of flexible, pragmatic, and environmental approaches. These, they suggest, have opened the way to new urban and architectural forms.

Monograph dedicated to the new Intermodal Station Logroño, Spain by Iñaki Abalos and Renata Sentkiewicz, tells how the authors started from the intention to exploit the underground of the tracks and the train station to create a memorable urban event. Under a single encompassing gesture, it doesn''t only contribute functional benefits to the city of Logroño (a new high-speed railway and bus station), but specially allows to create a large pedestrian space, a park or artificial hill, culminating with uninterrupted pursuit of a new urban green ring where the tracks would separate the city in two.

Résumé:
Spanish architect Julio Cano Lasso (1920–1996) was celebrated for his rational and austerely engineered buildings as well as his commitment to designing social housing and urban infrastructure. Lasso’s buildings are practical, modern, and immediately recognisable for their bare-bones aesthetic. He was, in the real sense of the word, an eclectic; fusing diverse sources and periods in his built works. Featuring previously unpublished texts by authors such as William J.R. Curtis, Juhani Pallasmaa, Iñaki Ábalos, and Juan Navarro Baldeweg, as well as archival images complemented by recent photographs by Iwan Baan, this volume proudly presents Cano Lasso’s legacy.

This issue, the third and final part of the series, offers a close reading of the interior in the context of contemporary architecture. It contains recent projects and relevant voices in support of the importance of the interior and the intimate material knowledge architects must demonstrate. With contributions from Richard Sennett, Kiel Moe, Salmaan Craig, and Iñaki Ábalos, it not only reflects the current complexity and the challenges faced by the discipline, but also traces future paths to explore.

Résumé:
This publication presents local and international voices providing a critical snapshot of recent Chilean urban projects, public spaces, and architectures. It explores the credentials and potentials of Chilean contemporary practices beyond the external categorizations that have received from specialized media, analyzing them instead in relation to the city and the question of public space. This book shows a selection of projects made by Chilean scholars Luis Eduardo Bresciani, Romy Hecht, and Rodrigo Pérez de Arce, which is assessed by the international scholars Saskia Sassen, Stan Allen and Iñaki Ábalos, and it's followed by the conversations between them moderated by Columbia GSAPP Professors Clara Irazábal, Galia Solomonoff and Enrique Walker, plus a reflection on Chilean cities and public space by Mark Wigley.

Internationally known for his labors as head of the famous magazine Quaderns between 1981 and 1990, Josep Lluís Mateo has never abandoned his professional practice as an architect, building not only in Spain, but in various European countries, an activity he currently combines with teaching at the ETH in Zurich. This monographic issue presents his most recent projects and buildings. Among his built works are the housing block on Borneo Island (Amsterdam), two groups of apartments in Barcelona, a covered swimming pool in Girona, and the Barcelona International Convention Center, due to be inaugurated in 2004. This number features essays by such prestigious international critics as Wilfried Wang, Ákos Moravánszky, Manuel Delgado, Aaron Betsky and Ignasi de Solà-Morales, and is complemented by a conversation with Iñaki Ábalos, a text by Mateo himself, "In Globalization", and photos taken especially for this issue by Xavier Ribas.
